I've got the Elite version, which from all reports is supposed to be better. I'm very pleased with it: two commentary tracks, extras, good audio and video.
If you're a real fan of the film or a film collector, you'll want to pass on both of these and get the limited edition, due to come out... um... next year? rutger_s probably has a more exact date.
I'm sure zombie will chime in here spouting propaganda about Anchor Bay, but he does this for every movie they release.

yeah.. i think there is details on http://www.anchorbayentertainment.com
it says that it will be a limited edition tin:

they are also releasing a LE for Evil Dead 2 due in August 2000.

quote:
For those of you who are inquiring about the Limited Edition Tins that are coming out along with such titles as
Repo Man and Evil Dead 2, some clarifications and announcements need to be made. These Limited Edition
sets will be packaged in a collectable metal container which is approximately the width and length of a
conventional DVD Keepcase. The container, which will be adorned with exclusive artwork, will have the DVD
in a specially designed jewel case along with an exclusive 48 page booklet. The booklet will have exclusive
photos, essays, interviews etc.
These Limited Edition Tins will be produced in quantities ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 (depending on the
title) and will generally retail for $39.98 instead of the previously reported $49.98. Please keep in mind that the
content on the DVD contained in the Tin will be identical to the regular edition DVD. The items such as the
packaging and the booklet will be exclusive to the Limited Edition. The Limited Edition Tins do not contain any
additional DVD discs or features.

I thought that Anchor Bay was releasing an Evil Dead SE (with the same extras as the LE but not in the tin). Is the tin just the current Anchor Bay DVD repackaged?
Maybe I should get the Elite now. It sounds pretty good.

The scoop from rutger_s is that the DVD will be identical to the Anchor Bay version that's already out there, which is generally regarded as sub-par to the Elite version.
So which do you want: a great DVD or an OK DVD in fancy packaging for lots more $$$$$$?

Taken directly from www.anchorbayentertainment.com
On August 29th we get:
Evil Dead 2: Restored - THX Approved and
Evil Dead 2: Restored - THX Approved Limited Edition Tin
EVIL DEAD 2: SPECIAL EDITION
Starring: Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Danny Hicks - Directed By: Sam Raimi
DVD SPECIAL FEATURES
- THX Approved
- Widescreen Presentation
- Audio Commentary by star Bruce Campbell, director Sam Raimi, co-writer Scott Spiegel and ...special effect artist Gregory Nicotero
- Never Before Seen "Behind the Scenes" Footage
Then in Jan 2001 we get:
Evil Dead - THX and
Evil Dead - THX Limited Edition Tin (30,000 Available)
It doesn't list any features for this disk yet, but I expect it to be Special Edition similar to the Evil Dead 2 one. If it wasn't, then why would they re-release it if they had nothing to add to it.

DVD Talk Special Edition
Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I would like to state that the Anchor Bay disc looks and sounds just as good as the Elite version. It just does not have the supplements of the Elite disc.
My only gripe is the Super-Jewel Box that the Anchor Bay version comes in, It gets scuff marks way too easily.
Both are excellent discs, If you just want the movie and don't care about extras, go with Anchor Bay, Otherwise I would get the Elite version.
