The Val Newton DVDs look great, but the flimsy cardboard box that they're packaged in is trash... almost 2x as tall as a DVD (won't fit my regular shelves), loose flap on the top that doesn't fold in, & huge letters on the bottom front, "PROTECTED BY ANTI-THEFT DEVICE". Pretty disappointing coming from Warners IMO.

You are aware that the outer security box (I assume you bought it at a discount warehouse) is to be thrown away...?

unless the Best Buy worker bee's were completely clueless - I didn't see that the in store price of the Val Lewton Box set was on sale (online it's only $7 less from the MSRP)

The Lewton set is $38.99 @ Costco for anyone who shops there, by the way.

Best Buy seems to be carrying the set in the longbox format. It is $58.99. Are any stores selling it in a normal sized box?

I just saw it at best Buy today and it was in a normal sized box just like all the other Warner sets are... isn't he talking about the warehouse club packaging that you rip off and toss?

So some people got only the warehouse longbox and no artbox, is that what's going on? Bizarre. Warner's packaging plant must have had a serious screw-up if that's the case. Anyone who got one like that should simply take it back or contact the site they got it from. The copies at my Costco all had the longbox with the inner box art visible within, so there was no mistaking the contents.

Just finished I Walked With A Zombie. Anybody notice some strange flicker during parts of the film? The transfer is rather good in some places, other places are just awful with dirt and patches of bright blobs over the flim....cloudy. But what I am concerned with here is this strange flicker...seems to be only in certain areas of the image and noticable during some tracking shots where it seems the screen is jumpy. Is this a transfer issue or a problem with my disc?

I believe Savants review mentions this but am unsure if it is the same issue I am having.

Apparently early pressings of the Val Lewton set featured the long box. Later pressings feature the normal Warner's box ala Film Noir, Gangster, Controversial Classics, etc. I ordered mine from Amazon and got the normal box.

I've only made it through 3 of the movies so far (Cat People, Curse of the Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie) and thought they were all very good. I have a particular fondness for Curse which took me totally by surprise as it is an examination of childhood psychological problems and is told from primarily from a child's point of view in near fairy tale form. Really magical film, imo.

i believe the flicker is just part of the transfer. Its not bad, just not top notch. The film has not been kept very well, so the original elements have flaws. STill looks leaps and bounds better than anytime i ever saw it on video or television though.

Thanks. I figured as much.

And as per the post above yours, I too was very impressed with Curse which certainly did not lend to the title of the film. Took me by surprise. VERY well done.

Looks like the Val Lewton box is being reissued, this time with a full-length documentary with Martin Scorsese as a bonus sixth disk. The Scorsese doc is also available seperately, so hopefully Netflix will carry it.

It aired just over a week ago on Turner Classic Movies and I'm sure they'll eventually rerun it.
