Fantasia - The original 124-minute version of Fantasia has never had a wide theatrical release. The only times the original "Fantasound" version of the film played were in roadshow engagments from November 1940 until December 1941. Walt Disney himself had to personally supervise this release, which only played in 12 venues (only 16 "Fantasound" equipped prints were ever made). The original roadshow version, apart from its fifteen-minute intermission, runs 124 minutes (just over two hours). Compared to the more familiar versions of Fantasia, it featured:
- much lengthier (and always on-camera) interstitials from Deems Taylor, especially for the then-revolutionary "Rite of Spring" sequence.
- A round of applause from the orchestra for Mickey - Mouse following the "Sorcerer's Aprrentice" sequence, after Mickey and Stokowski shake hands and Mickey runs off-screen. This is immediately followed by a sight gag involving a chimes player having an accident with his instrument.
- footage of the musicians exiting and re-entering the bandstands immediately before and after the intermission. The sequence after the intermission features an impromptu jam session by the on-screen musicians.
- No on-screen credits, save one title card which displayed the film's name, the copyright notice, "Color by Technicolor," the MPPDA approval certificate, and the RCA Sound System logo. The production credits were featured in a specially prepared collectible program booklet availiable for purchase by roadshow performance attendees. Since the first editing of the film after its initial roadshow release, none of this extra material (except part of the intermission used for the 50th Anniversary's end credits sequence) has been seen publicly until the 60th Anniversary release.

- The 60th Anniversary Edition DVD restores all of the interstitial footage (including the Intermission), but the soundtrack of the extended Deems Taylor dialogue could not be located, so a new recording of voice-over actor Corey Butron reciting all of the Deems Taylor dialogue had to be made in order for the narration to sound more uniform throughout. In addition, "The Pastoral Symphony" is more complete, but hard zooming had to be done on some scenes to avoid showing the controversial "picaninny centaurette."

- One shot in the Pastoral sequence was digitally altered for the 60th anniversary DVD to remove a black centaurette. In the original version, the centaurette rolls out the red carpet for Bacchus as he approaches his throne. The alteration makes it look like the carpet is rolling by itself. [Prior laserdisc version had a tad more visual information of the black centaurette, the revised DVD edition completely erases all shots of this character. Calling this dvd edition a 'restored' version is a complete and erroneous misnomer]

- The 1990 50th Anniversary theatrical re-release features an element all other versions before or since don't have...an end title sequence crediting all the people involved in the film's production. This is seen over the departing musicians' footage taken from the long-deleted intermission to the "roadshow" version. The end credit sequence is only available on the 50th Anniversary videocassette and LaserDisc editions.

- blu-ray edition: retains some of the cropping but also had digital removing of 'Sunflower' entirely, but retained the full 1.33 framing of the scene (i.e, uncropped).

I think it was, but I'll try to verify it with a websearch/review.

I take it we are talking about only films which are available with more than one cut, or only available in a cut different than the theatrical version, right? You mentioned "double dipped" but that would make the list too long if you include movies that were just released again with the same cut.

Star Wars (all but Episode II IIRC)
Apollo 13: IMAX version included with Anniversary Edition
Disney's Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King can be watched with or without an extra song, but even without it it's not quite the same as the theatrical version (unless the theaters are IMAX theaters)
Aladdin could count also, at least for the changing of a line in the opening song if not for slight animation changes.
Josie and the Pussycats had a PG version released.

How nitpicky can we be? Does the bush blurring in Mulholland Dr. count?

A lot of Oliver Stone's DVDs are director's cuts. JFK, Nixon, Any Given Sunday, and Natural Born Killers are ones with a Director's Cut for sure.

didn't Lions Gate Home Video along with the unrated release of "Monster's Ball" also release an extended cut of "Eve's Bayou"?

Should X-Men and Ray even count? The deleted scenes are available using a "branching" feature, but it isn't seamless. Same thing with Young Adam, the more "offensive" footage is contained as a special feature, not as an alternate version of the film.

And White Chicks is available in PG-13 and Unrated versions.

FWIW, there is no DVD of the US theatrical cut of Brazil. Although the old barebones Universal disc lists the shorter runtime, it actually contains the same director's cut as the Criterion disc. The European theatrical cut is available in some places outside R1, but in R1, only the director's cut and TV edit have been released.

'Streetcar Named Desire' is only available in the "director's cut" version ... does that count?

'The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly' has two cuts
'Nixon' had two releases, I believe the first was the theatrical, but there's definitely a director's cut
'Manhunter' has had four different cuts released, though none was the widescreen version of the true theatrical cut.
I believe 'Thief' was modified as well
'Mallrats' has a different cut coming soon ... also, I believe 'Clerks' was an "original cut", not a "director's cut" [unlike 'Mallrats', which will be a director's cut]
Several Chaplin movies are available in different cuts, both done by Chaplin ... 'Modern Times', 'A King In New York', 'A Lady In Paris', and 'The Kid' ... maybe more, depending how technical you want to be about 'The Circus'
'Halloween'
'New York, New York' is only a director's cut
'Amadeus'
'The Outsiders' has a new cut coming soon
'Apocalypse Now'
'1941' and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' have both been modified from their original cuts
'The Wild Bunch' is only the "director's cut", and a new extended "director's cut" is being done ... on that subject, there's an extended 'Major Dundee' coming soon, and I believe 'Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid' is being changed (again) as well ... but, on the other hand, those were all recut by the studio anyway ... I don't know what this list is intended to cover
Wasn't there an extended cut of the new 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'?
'Blood Simple' is only the director's (or s') re-cut
'Blade Runner' is only available in a director's cut, and there's a new cut on the way if they ever clear the legal hurdles

I think so. Superman was on the original list, so I assume he's counting movies only available in a version different from the theatrical cut.

giles, i was wondering if you are updating the first post or just adding a new post with the updated list.

first post update with a bump post would make it easier to see the list when you update it.
