Current musicals that would make great movies

With Rent, The Producers, Batboy: The Musical in various states of production and slated for release in the near future, what other 'newer' musicals would you like to see make a transition to a film version.

I'd like to see:

- The Who's Tommy - the stage version was fantastic - I'd love to see what this version might look like on the big screen.

- The Secret Garden (1991 Broadway musical)- fantastic score, one wonder's what Merchant-Ivory would do with this vastly underrated musical

- Avenue Q

Tommy already has a film version and its not exactly new. The film came out in 1975. In fact, I think the film version may actually have predated the Broadway version.

sorry what I meant by The Who's Tommy - would be visualization of a screen version for the 1992 stage version, which I happened to see on Broadway, the Broadway road version at the Kennedy Center and last years very scaled down version at the Studio Theatre (which incidently was terrible).

I didn't know Batboy was going to be a movie. Haven't seen the show, but I love the music.

They could probably do a good movie version of Les Mis or Miss Saigon.

yup, Bat Boy believe it or not, directed by John Landis.

"Miss Saigon" would be cool.

WICKED! www.wickedthemusical.com

Awesome book, I haven't seen the musical, but I think a book adaptation would make a great movie.

I was going to say this as I enjoyed the book as well, but yet to see the musical(its always sold-out, and have to buy so far in advanced). Although people might freak out since they in a sense would be changing the Wizard of Oz story and fans might have a fit over that.

A third on Wicked. Just imagine the visuals when Elphie's singing "Defying Gravity".
It's coming to San Jose, CA in July so I'm definitely watching.

ya know, talking about witches - I happened to have endured the musical version of The Witches of Eastwick when it played in London - it was pretty bad, although the sequence when they all levitate and fly over the audience was a stitch.

Although I've never seen the show, only have the original cast soundtrack, I second 'Avenue Q' and rate it an intended 'R'. Muppets for adults anyone?

I really like Ragtime. It probably has my favorite song score from musicals of the past 10 years.

Hairspray might work, too (yet another movie->stage musical->possible movie musical).

While I never really cared for Rent, it's good to see that a number of the original Broadway cast are in the film. Even if they're about 10 years too old for their characters now!
