I'm looking for a decent quality receiver for a friend of mine who is setting up a home theater. He wants a receiver that will be good for both music and dvd, but it's more important that it excel with music. I'm thinking he should go with an entry level yamaha (595a) or denon (avr-1700.) It should be DD5.1 with at least 70 watts by 5. I don't really think that s-video switching or dts is that important, but it would be fine if it was included. What models do you all reccommend? If you could include current prices that would be great too. Thanks!

Sound City has Onkyo TS-DS575 refurbished units for $299 shipped. Good receiver -- 70wpc, DD/DTS -- no s-video switching.

Receivers at Sound City that are close in price are the Sony STR-DB845 and Pioneer Elite VSX-21.

Sony is crap. If I were you I would look into Denon, Yamaha, or Onkyo. Denon came out with the AVR-1601. I think it runs at about $300. I would definately get Denon. They make the best receiver's. They have the best sound and image quality.
