"Ed Wood" to be released on DVD

I did a quick search and didn't see any other posts on this yet, so I started a new thread. I apologize if this is a dupe.

I just got an email from Amazon.com saying that I can now pre-order "Ed Wood" ... the DVD that was mysteriously pulled off the shelves last month days before it was supposed to go on sale.

Does anybody know if this is the exact same DVD edition as the one I bought on Ebay from the recalled stock, or is this different?

A quick look at the "Product Details" on Amazon.com seems to indicate that the extras are different:

-------------------------------------------------

DVD Features:

Commentary by director Tim Burton and actor Martin Landau

Deleted scenes

Behind-the-scenes footage hosted by Johnny Depp

"When Carol Met Larry" a cross-dressing introspective

Production design featurette and more

Widescreen anamorphic format

-------------------------------------------------

So if anybody has any info, please post and let us know. If the extras are substantially different, I might want to buy another copy of "Ed Wood."

I have two different editions of "Plan 9 From Outer Space" because they came with different extra features!

The Amazon page allows you to 'pre-order' the title, but they have no PRICE or RELEASE DATE. That alone leads me to believe that Amazon is just making this up...

That's funny. Amazon's website still lists it as "Not Yet Released." What gives?

Edit: Ummm... what bboisvert just said.

email from Amazon

Here is the beginning of the email I received today from Amazon:

----------------------------------------------------------

Date: 12 Mar 2004 07:16:20 -0800
X-AMAZON-TRACK: 3556421
To: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
From: "Amazon.com" <[email protected]>
Subject: "Ed Wood (Special Edition)" (DVD) is available for pre-order at Amazon.com

Greetings from Amazon.com.

You've previously signed up to be notified when "Ed Wood (Special Edition)" (DVD) became available, and we're happy to inform you that it is now available to pre-order.

If you would like to pre-order this item now, just follow the link below:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...ref=t_th_em_po

Once you've placed your order, we will ship this item to you as soon as it is released (your credit card will not be charged until this item is ready for shipping).

------------------------------------------------

So the distributor has told Amazon.com that the DVD will be available soon, they just don't have an official release date yet.

They would not be taking pre-orders if the DVD was not going to be available. If you looked at Amazon.com after the last "Ed Wood" recall, they just said the item was "not available" there was no way to pre-order it.

Maybe the rumors that they were delaying the release of the DVD with the hope of hyping the movie with Academy Awards by Johnny Depp and/or Bill Murray were right.

But it still looks like the extas may be different. I'm waitiing for definitive info from somebody who really knows what's going on.

I found some copies of Ed Wood on the shelf at a Wal-Mart last month, but I was buying several other titles that were on sale and I just couldn't come up with another $20, so I passed on it.

It will come out before too long and I'll be able to get it on sale for less anyway....

And, besides - I've still got 12 unopened DVD's to watch!

Again, I find that nearly impossible to believe. When, in the entire history of online video preordering, has this happend? A distributor telling a retailer to begin taking preorders for an item -- without telling them (a) when it is coming out and (b) how much the cost will be?

Doesn't make any damn sense.

This is either a hiccup in Amazon's system or a mistake of some sort.

You may be right.

I already have a copy of the "Ed Wood" Special Edition DVD, so it's no big deal to me. But I was kinda surprised to get that email from Amazon.com today and they have definitely changed their website listing for the "Ed Wood" DVD to indicate that the DVD will be availabe .. it did NOT look like that last month after the DVD was recalled.

Anway, we shall see eventually.

I paid $61 for my copy of Ed Wood on Ebay .. you may be able to get one for less than $20.

I've had the AC/DC - Rock Masters DVD in my wish list for over a year. It still has no release date and has been pre-orderable the entire time.
So consider this DVD title when assessing the ability to preorder at Amazon...

Doesn't amazon have a history of doing this? I won't believe it until it is at the very least available for pre-order at several places and a release date is announced (3rd times a charm guys )

Actually, this happens every so often on Amazon. Amazon just doesn't make things up.

Similar situations occurred on Amazon with:

Bat 21
Wierd Science

Here's even a current example of a Criterion title:

The Lower Depths

There are rare occassions when studios announce that they will release a movie prior to having an estimate of the release date (or having a final estimate of price - this may be the main point of contention in regards to royalties / rights issues). It has happenned before and I seriously doubt that this situation is any different.

Well if true, than perhaps people were right about BV waiting until after the Oscars or until Secret Window came out. It remains to be seen if the content will be the same. After paying twice MSRP for it, I hope it isn't!

DVD Release Date: January 1, 2010
This is just a VERY early pre-order.

Hehe, at least I got $40+ for three copies on Ebay.

I finally watched one copy I kept for myself and it was an interesting movie. Never saw it before and probably wouldnt have if this recall didnt happen. I just never had the urge to watch it until now. It wasnt bad. I will have to listen to the commentary someday.

I got this email as well. It means nothing. Now that I think of it, $26.XX w/ shipping really wasn't a bad price at all. Thank you all for setting me straight.

I hate to be mean, but that shit pisses me off. You buy up 3 copies of the movie, so now a person who actually likes the movie can't get it for a low price, and is forced to shell out the ungodly prices on ebay.

If someone was willing to pay it, I don't see a problem.

ANYBODY WHO BUYS DVDS FOR A PROFIT IS AN ******* IN MY BOOK. Your milage may very, depending on the principals you have set for yourself in your life, if any.

edited: I see OOP dvds at sotres from time to time, but I don't buy them unless I want the title. I leave it there in hopes that someone who actually wants to enjoy the movie will buy it, but it probably ends up in some dvd whores hands anyway. Oh well, at least my concience is clear.
