Someone explain to me how the heck Uma Thurman got a nomination over Naomi Watts (21 Grams) and Jennifer Connelly (The House of Sand & Fog)?

And no Marcia Gay Harden for Mystic River?!??! She was one of the best in a sterling cast!

With this, I would say that Cold Mountain might very well be ROTK's main competitor and not Mystic River, though the both are tough.

Uma Thurman? Oh please, people. I enjoyed Kill Bill, saw it twice, but the idolotry for Quentin Tarantino's most overrated film needs to stop.

In a weaker year I wouldn't care so much but with performances this year from Naomi Watts (21 Grams) and Keisha-Castle Hughs (Whale Rider)? I don't think so.

Also, I had absolutely no idea Lost in Translation was a comedy. Guess it was the one or two instances where the film pokes fun at the Japanese.

I think Uma's nomination was out of pity, because of her divorce. Or maybe not.

Maybe the Hollywood Foreign Press has a really sick and twisted foot-fetish.

Uma Thurman deserves a nomination for Kill Bill. I can't imagine any other actress in the role of "The Bride". She obviously gave a great performance and worked really hard, so what's the problem?

I think it's because Lucy Liu's acting was so bad that it made Uma seem Shakespearean in comparion. But consider who Uma's replacing - Naomi Watts and Jennifer Connelly - thespians leagues ahead of Uma in every way.

In your opinon, of course. I'd say Watts and Connelly are about on par with Thurman for me.

Why are you people dogging Uma Thurman? I thought she gave a very good performance in Kill Bill and she practically carried the movie. I haven't seen Naomi Watt's or Jennifer Connelly's performances, but I still think Uma deserved a nomination for Kill Bill.

I'm happy for Jack Black and disappointed for Keisha Castle-Hughes.

Where's Sean Astin, too? I think his -extremely- sincere performance in ROTK is at least worth a nomination. Also disappointed about Naomi Watts and just the general lack of ROTK nominations.

I never give two figs about what the Foreign Press Association decides to nominate for these "awards". Admittedly all awards are a little wacky, but if you ever read up on this so-called critics group and their secretive ways, you'll find there's very little reason to give much credence for anything they nominate. It's basically just one big love fest (OK, so are the Oscars, but comparitively speaking I place a little more weight in their picks).

Was just thinking the same thing. It's a tough year. All nominees are good IMO. And well deserved. I also don't know why Uma is getting flack here. I think she was the best thing about "Kill Bill". But oh well, you can't please everybody.

Does anyone know why some categories have six nominations and others have five?

I know POTC isn't exactly a musical(unless you count Cap't Jack singing "Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho) and it's not really a comedy either, but this would have been the closest category for it.
So it is a bit of a disappointment.
Glad to see Johnny Depp nominated tho. I seriously think his chances at an Oscar nod are very good, too. With the just-released DVD, his People mag and E Entertainment awards, he has a high profile and I think his performance won't be forgotten and will be justly rewarded.

Not sure how you could say that - have you seen House of Sand and Fog or 21 Grams for that matter?

As much as I complain about the Oscars, the Globes make them look better every year.

I always considered it a comedy. Maybe not a comedy in the same sense of something like "Old School" or "Bruce Almighty" or something like that, but definitely a comedy, although a low-key one. With that being said, good to see it, and Murray, get some recognition.

How could he say that? Simple. It's a matter of opinion. That's what everybody seems to forget when they whine about somebody getting nominated over somebody else. This is all very, very subjective and opinion based. Myself, I love Connelly, but didn't think she was anything special in House of Sand and Fog, although I have yet to see 21 Grams to form an opinion (although i want to see it really badly.)

I can't believe Naomi Watts (21 Grams) and Jennifer Connelly (House of Sand & Fog) got snubbed. I thought they were going to be nominated for sure. Also 21 Grams got absolutely 0 nominations. Very sad.

Not a very good list - with a few exceptions.

Much too mainstream for my taste.

Too few ROTK nominations and no Bill Nighty for supporting actor in Love Actually. I would have really liked to see that one.
