8 Simple Rules - 09/23/03
In a word, a bit disappointed.
If I hadn't enjoyed the show so much last year, I probably would have turned this ep off after about 10 minutes.
Some of pregnancy jokes were good, but the whole Bridget and the hunky new guy stuff was absolutely painful to watch.
I hope the next two (final) eps find their footing, as a proper send-off.

In 3 words, I agree with you.
I do think it picked up in the middle and had some very funny moments, but in a lot of ways, this wasn't the show we watched last season. Perhaps they tried too hard to be serious with the pregnancy angle, but this was not a good premiere and doesn't give much confidence that the show's going to be able to survive without Ritter.

monkey, beat me too it, I was going to post a discussion of season 2. the seris permiere should have been good, but was disappointed with it also, it didnt have the edge of season one did, clever witt, and the scriptwriters just left a bit of a clunker. given the fact that simple rules is funny, the spark however was not there in this episode.while I was hoping that cate, segals character was pregenet, it would have been awful to find out that the father died, and cant be with his new baby. atlas, it turns out shes not pregenet, but still there the possibily, she could be. granted, brigenet and kerry are usually funnier and so is ritter, i couldnt help but think, this is away not to send off the seris of season 2,and to honors ritters legancy. I am truely going to tape(as i have been) all the other remaing episodes, because i love simple rules, the plot, the script's rightfully funny, and the cast gel wonderfully, creatively together. even if the other remaing episodes turn out not to be so good,at least it will be good to own the final work of a tremedous talent at the helm of a funny show.maybe, i'm thinking off, but season 2 is not as good as buffy season 2,or basically not in the same league as that. what the writers could achieve is a better second episode with good funny stuff, and cleaver writers. although it was there in the opener of this season,it sure didnt show any signs it had going for it. i'll give the screenwriters credit and the cast, it's not the cast fault that the opener to this season was dismal in anyway. rightfully, i hope the screenwriters can have a more interesting point to make in the final episodes that were filmed with john ritter. afterall, if season 2 is not as good,at least we have season 1 that shows off tremendous talent and good comedic writing, and then season 2 will be the farewell to a great cast member and a wonderful father. i'm not putting down season 2 i'm just saying that it should improve, whereas, the opener wasn't so thrilling as it should be.

I agree, it's not as good as Buffy or even Deep Space Nine. I want to print this post out and take a red Sharpie to it!

I was going to post a discussion of Season 2. The seris permiere should have been good, but I was disappointed with it also, it didn't have the edge that season one did: clever wit.
The scriptwriters just left a bit of a clunker. given the fact that '8 Simple Rules' is funny, the spark however was not there in this episode. While I was hoping that Kate Segal's character was pregnant, it would have been awful to find out that the father died, and cant be with his new baby. Alas, it turns out shes not pregnant, but still there is the possibility that she could be.
Granted, Brigenet and Kerry are usually funnier and so is Ritter, I couldn't help but think, 'this is away not to start off the new season and honor Ritter's legacy.'
I am truly going to tape (as i have been) all the remaining episodes, because I love '8 Simple Rules'. The plots and the script are rightfully funny, and the cast gel wonderfully and creatively together. Even if the other remaining episodes turn out not to be so good, at least it will be good to own the final work of a tremendous talent at the helm of a funny show.
Maybe my thinking is off, but Season 2 is not as good as Buffy Season 2... [edited tangeant for clarity] ...and then Season 2 will be the farewell to [Ritter] and a wonderful father.
I'm not putting down this season, Ii'm just saying that it should improve, whereas, the opener wasn't as thrilling as it should be.
