Buffy and Early James Bond: interesting similarities: SPOILERS FOR BOTH SERIES
SPOILERS FOR BOTH BOND AND BUFFY MATERIALS
Okay, since I have no real life and am a true movie geek, I did some thinking about the early bond series and how sometimes one series reflects another.
If one looks specifically at the first seven Bond movies and compares them to the seven seasons of Buffy, one finds a great amount of similarities. Here's a breakdown that will prove my geekdom once and for all.
Dr. No-1st Bond film
-Bond is introduced but has yet to find his cool niche and kills mostly in cold blood. He conquers a foe whom he discovers is part of bigger organization: SPECTRE.
Buffy Season one
-Buffy is introduced with a little past to her. She is funny, but the ultra cool character has yet to emerge. She conquers a foe that she discovers comes from a larger selection: the Hellmouth.
From Russia With Love
-Bond finds his niche more, and falls in love with a woman working for the other side (well, love is a term Bond uses loosely!). While still kind of wet, the franchise seems to have legs. SPECTRE is still present with plenty of evil men left.
Buffy Season two
-Buffy falls for a guy who eventually goes to the wrong side and kills him. Begins kind of wet, but ends on the note of a series with lots of potential. The Hellmouth is still present and a larger evil is hinted at for the next season.
Goldfinger
-Bond meets up with a foe that while never directly identified as working for SPECTRE, can presumably be one of their agents. However, this agent seems to be out for himself and Bond almost meets his end at the hands of the bad guy's henchman. This movie is soon widely regarded as the quintessential Bond movie with all of the gadgets, ladies, etc.
Buffy Season Three
-The season widely regarded as the quintessential Buffy season. Buffy fights an evil being that is more out for himself than anything else, and almost dies at the hand of his henchman (more like henchwoman, gotta love Faith!).
ThunderBall
-The film where everyone finally notices Bond. The organization of SPECTRE is shown to be truly powerful. Great movie, but doesn't quite live up to Goldfinger.
Buffy Season Four
-The season where a lot of people finally tuned in to the show. More demons begin to appear and the Hellmouth seems to have an endless supply of monsters, whether demons or man-made. Great, but doesn't quite live up to season three.
You Only Live Twice
-Bond "dies" at the beginning. The movie has some good action and the Masetermind behind SPECTRE makes his presence known.
Buffy Season Five
-Buffy "dies" at the end. Some good moments, and a major big bad in the form of Glory makes her presence well known,
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
-Regarded as the weakest of the Bond films. Bond shows a more human side, SPECTRE is more of a subplot, and the movie ends on a darker note with the death of Bond's wife.
Buffy Season six
-Regarded as the weakest Buffy season. Buffy and her friends face more realistic problems and the Hellmouth and its bad guys take a backseat. While not ending on a down note, a rather prominent regular dies toward the season's finale.
Diamonds are Forever
-Back to basics as Connery returns and more adventure ensues. However, everything seems like trodden ground and the SPECTRE organization is presumably vanquished once and for all.
Buffy Season seven
-Bakc to basics with Buffy kicking arese and delivering one liners. But, almost everything seems tried and true. The Hellmouth is closed and evil in Sunnydale ( not to mention Sunnydale itself) is vanquished once and for all.
Bond of course continued, but once Roger Moore came on board the franchise changed. While still entertaining, it seemed to begin to stress gadgets, comedy, and flashy action over actual espionage material. Let's just hope that Angel as a series continues to stress the basics and not slip into self parody. Although it is a different show, the torch passing for the Buffyverse is present and it needs to respect the foundations.

Interesting observations. So what can we say based on these similarities? The creative people responsible for Buffy are fans of old James Bond movies?

I would say that given the fact that the Buffy character of Xander was based on Whedon, and Xander did dress as Bond once at Halloween in hopes of getting transformed into his costume, we can make a logical conclusion that Whedon digs Bond movies.
