Yeah, it's pretty good... Directed by the guy who did a lot of the special effects on 2001. It's actually pretty violent for a G rated film! Ah, they don't make em like they used to. Damn MPAA...

Personally, I love this film. It was a pretty big deal back in the day (early 1970s), although it apparently isn't so much any more... judging from the fact that two posters in this thread haven't even heard of it (!!)

It's a good, thoughtful, "environmental" sci-fi film. Slow (but in a good way). Just don't go in expecting laser battles and you should enjoy yourself.

Actually, danol, the original DVD was widescreen (non-anamorphic). The new version has a new anamorphic transfer and some extras.

The movie IS very good, even if Joan Baez makes my stomach turn.

Joan's singing wasn't a highlight for me either; good film though. Give it a chance, spid77.

One of my favorites... has some excellent documentaries and interviews with Bruce Dern & the director Douglas Trumbull. As well as a good commentary.

Interesting note: After the success of Easy Rider, Universal decided to experiment by making 5 films with a budget of $1million each. Silent Running was one... American Graffiti was another... I don't remember the other 3.

Call me soft but Joan Baez's songs bring a tear to my eye in this movie, as does the final scene ...

I'm not the only one though. My girlfriend cried her eyes out when this film ended. See it and you might understand why.
Spoiler:
Loneliest ending ever ...

I'm with dlavalle and a few of the others - Silent Running is one of my personal favourites, emphasis on the personal. The whole soundtrack is excellent. The effects are fine and give a great sense of the enormous scale of these spaceships. Just give a little, forget we're in the 21st century, forget hippy-bashing and listen to what the film's saying

Ditto! Excellent flick and really deserves a look-see. Bruce Dern is great but the real stars of the film are Huey , Lou-ey and Duey!

Gotta love those little guys!

Huey, Duey, and Louie! It's an excellent film. Another "yes" vote from me.

Many years ago, I saw this as a young kid when I was at a friend's birthday party. As we ate pizza his mom tossed in the videotape. I thought "Oh, great - a G-rated flick - this is going to be lame." Boy, was I wrong. I immediately fell in love with the film.

I agree with andyh - the ending is very moving.

It's a little dated but very interesting. It was part of that early 70s wave of ecology-themed sf/horror films -- things like SOYLET GREEN, DOOMWATCH and FROGS -- although it's quite a bit better than most of its brethren. Bruce Dern is terrific in it and it has great f/x by Douglas Trumball.

Thanks for the clear up, too bad they didn't use the song Silent running by Mike (Ruthford) and the Mechanics, I have that CD, he as part of Genesis with Phil Collins.

This forum must be made up of 20+ year olds, I seen Silent Running in theater 6 years after from graduationg H.S. in 1965

Us older guys will tell you about our experiences when ever possible.

I saw this as a little kid, and at the end I cried like..well...a little kid.

I really should pick this up, I haven't seen it in years.

Colossus

I found Silent Running to be a very good film. I bought it on laserdisc years ago but mine came in a double laserdisc set with another film called Colossus: The Forbin Project. I found this film to be really intriguing as a computer literally takes over the world and no one can do anything about it. Here's a short synopsis:

Synopsis:
Dr. Charles Forbin (Eric Braeden), the world’s leading expert on computer systems, conceives and creates for the U.S. government an advanced electronic brain called "Colossus." Impartial...emotionless...a paragon of reason. Colossus is sealed inside a Colorado mountain and placed in irrevocable control of America’s national security. But Colossus, capable of creative thought, uses its superior intelligence to detect - and join forces with - an identical Russian computer system, and the ruthless combined super-brains suddenly turn world dictator. With nuclear missiles poised to fire at any nation that questions the absolute authority of the computers, mankind learns that it must exist on Colossus' terms - or perish!

It's not out on DVD but if you find a copy of VHS, it's worth seeing this fine film. I was hoping to see this film released when Silent Running came out on DVD but it never happened.

this is another one of my childhood favs!! I love this film and would love to drool over the dvd. I used to tape record the audio out of the tv speaker, and listen to things later while pretending to be sleeping. I taped this films audio and couldnt get enough of that voice, especially the closing speech to the world's people. great stuff.

welcome to the forum.

Logan's Run, Born Free, Capricorn One, and Silent Running were movies that impacted me at an early age. Like some others here, I watched this everytime I could as a kid when it came on TV, and was delighted when it came on DVD, and own both DVD editions.

If you only love action packed movies, you will not like S.R.

It can be slow at times, but has emotion and feeling behind the movie.

The SFXs are great for the early 70's, even for today.

You can see where Lucas got the idea for R2D2.

The card game with the robots was a funny moment in the movie.
