I had a brand new movie (Can't Hardly Wait) glitch on me twice the other night.

My dvd player was purchased in early 2000 I believe.

Will a cd player kit work find for dvd players?

You should clean a dvd player exactly never, except in 2 situations:

1) you keep it in a very dusty or smokey environment
2) it begins to exhibit problems

I agree with Steve, it should not be necessary to clean a DVD player. I have never cleaned either of my players and one is over 3 years old.

I vote "Never" as well. DVD players are closed boxes --- no vent holes like you have on a receiver. Dirt on the lens really shouldn't be a problem unless you live in extremely dusty or smokey conditions.

You might be better off cleaning the DVD itself.

I have had my Laserdisc player for over 10 years, and I have never needed to clean it.

Most likely, the glitch is on the disc (flaw or dirt,) or your player may just not like that disc as well.

If the laser in your DVD player is smoking, you have a hell of a lot bigger problem than a dirty lens.

I once cleaned the lens on a DVD player with alchohol and a cotton swap, and I wasn't gentle either. And it worked fine after that.

The problem was that it stopped playing dual-layer disks. I suspected it was because my natural gas space heater threw out a lot of dust/soot, and the DVD player was kind of in its path on the other side of the room.

I asked around before I did it, and everyone told me that DVD players never need cleaning. But everyone was wrong.

We did say that an exception is if you live in an exceptionally dusty or smokey environment.

If you weren't gentle, you're lucky you didn't thrown the laser pick-up out of alignment. In most cases, this isn't something people who don't know what they're doing should mess with.

I, too, don't recommend cleaning the player's insides.

But if you really want to, I suppose the best way would be to open the lid and squirt some air on the lens (using those blower thingies for camera lenses).

Ive always heard that CD and DVD players give off a small amout of smoke or like a dust like substance because of the laser.
I know I read it on a DVD FAQ somewhere..Im tryin to find it.
