Hi, I'm fairly new to this and I was wondering how I can get audio from my T.V. My dvd player works fine but I'm not sure how to get sound to come out of the T.V. since the 484 only has a monitor out for the video for the T.V. Where am I supposed to plug the audio?

I dunno...for the onkyo receiver, it has the monitor out tv thing in the back of it. that's the yellow colored plug. so i just plugged that into some yellow plug in the back of the tv. i think i plugged it under video 1 yellow slot. is that right? what am i doing wrong?

The point of using the video connection with the receiver is so that you can switch multiple video sources without having to change from one input on your TV to the other. The sound, though, is supposed to come from the Onkyo receiver and the speakers you have connected to it, not the crappy little speakers that are built into the TV.

If your TV has an s-video input, use the s-video output jack of your DVD player. You'll get a much better picture than you will using the "composite" connection, which is what the yellow cable is.

Either way, there is no audio signal going to your TV. See my explanation above. If you still want to use the speakers on your TV for some reason, you'll have to run red and white analog stereo audio cables from the DVD player's output jacks to the TV.

for my old setup, which was dolby pro logic, it was a very old system, i had my tv speakers turned off and used my surround speakers for sound. but it required using the composite cables. the red and white.

i don't understand how i can get sound to come out of the receiver if the only thing connected from the tv to the receiver is just the yellow plug alone, which would be the video cable.

my tv does have a s-video jack but i don't got s-video cable, soon though. but wouldn't using the s-video jack from the tv to the dvd player bypass the receiver? the composite plugs i used to hook up the dvd player to the receiver would be obsolete?

your explanation above says the sound is supposed to come out of the speakers from the receiver, but where is the sound supposed to come from? i think i'm missing something here...

mess is getting bigger and bigger...please help

ps. oh um, I'm not sure if you thought i meant no sound when playing a dvd, i meant no sound when just regularly watching tv.

Connect the red & white audio out from the back of your TV to the AUDIO inputs of Video 1 or 2 on the Onkyo Receiver. That way, you can get the TV sound through your Onkyo Receiver.

You should really just be using your TV as a monitor (just to watch a video source). That's why the Onkyo has a monitor output (video) but no audio.

1) Broadcast TV (Antenna)
2) Cable box
3) Satellite
4) VCR

Yah, I want to use it with my cable tv, trying to get sound from it. So just plugging the red and white plug to the video one on the receiver it will work? Right now my speaker system is somewhat old. Just an old Sony 5 piece system. Center, 2 fronts, and 2 surrounds. I think i can hook up the rest of the equipment, but I wanna know how to get sound from watching regular cable tv.

Yes, it's as easy as that! Just plug the Left & Right Audio OUT from your TV into Video 1 (or other input) on the Onkyo.

Yay!! hehe, i'm so dumb. finally got the sound the come out of my speakers instead of the tv ones. but when watching tv, only 3 of the 5 speakers work. just the center, left speaker, and left surround, the right side doesn't work. but in dvd mode, all channels work. Do you know why?

Just always remember, Video and Audio run on different cables, so if you have a connection for Video, you have to have a connection for Audio also.

Oh, and I'm guessing you probably have 2 audio outputs on your TV, and then you have that going to the Video 1 or 2 outputs on the back of the Onkyo (I have the same receiver). Well, since I have an older TV that does not have these outputs, I had to use my VCR, and to get sound out of all 5 speakers I had to get a Y connector that connected the Red/White from the Onkyo up to plug into the output on the VCR. I am guessing you will have to do the same for yours since you are only getting one channel (one side) of audio. You'll have to find which plug on your TV is actually sending the signal (probably labeled output) and get a Y cable and hook it up that way. You can find them at Target or Wal Mart.

Hi, I need more help...all that stuff above, it works perfectly fine.

But now I recently bought Monster Cable Video 2 S-Video Cable. Since my Onkyo 484 doesn't have an outlet for it, i hooked it up straight to my Wega 32" Tv. When I play a dvd, I get picture but I get no sound. I thought S-Video cable does both picture and sound? Am I wrong?

The S-Video only does video.

So from your DVD player you have an Svideo cable to your tv, but where is the Audio going? You should have wires going from the audio out on your DVD player to the _________ In on your Onkyo. I use _______ because you probably have a TV In, DVD In, CD in.....

Then just choose that channel and you should be fine.

It sounds like you have a Sony Wega TV, an Onkyo 484, and some model of DVD player. Do you have a VCR, TiVo, Playstation 2, or anything else that you want to hook up? Do you have cable, digital cable, or sat?

The composite connection only carries video too.

Connect your DVD player to your TV with an s-video cable for video, then run left and right (usually white and red) audio cables to the TV for the sound.

Although really, witha surround sound system like you have, you don't need to run audio cables to the TV, just a digital audio cable to the Onkyo receiver. You'll get the sound from the surround sound system, not the TV.

i've got cable tv. i don't think it's digital cable.

Thanks nekobus the monster cable site seems a little challenging at first, but i think i can read it. They've got many wires running all over the place.

My Onkyo 484 receiver don't have S-Video outlet. And me dvd player, Panasonic RV-30 has no 5.1 output. I dunno what that is and probably don't need to know. Right now i'm awaiting my Sony SA-WM 40 subwoofer. I know that i'm supposed to get an interconnect cable for this, but what does the internconnect cable mean? Is there like a site where I can look up all these terms and understand it?

The Impedance Rating of speakers should match the recommendations for the receiver with which they'll be used. Basically, a low impedence speaker needs more electrical current from its amplifier than a high-impedance model to produce the same level sound. An 8 ohm rating speaker is intended to work with nearly all home amplifiers and receivers.

The Minimum Wattage requirements for speakers should also be matched to their receiver to avoid "blowing" the speaker.

How do I know how many ohms i am currently using so there isn't some electrical surge? And how do I look for the minimum wattage thing so i don't blow out a speaker?

It helps if you can print out the pdfs. I did that and used it to explain to the others in the household how things work because they were a little intimidated by the whole HT setup. It solved the "I don't understand it, so I'm afraid to use it" problem. Now that it's understood, it's easier for me to get upgrades.
