Judge Dredd: Mega City One -- Live action TV series

http://ew.com/tv/2017/05/10/judge-dredd-tv-show/

EW can exclusively reveal that independent entertainment studio IM Global and independent U.K. games developer and publisher Rebellion have struck a deal to turn the iconic comic book character into a live-action TV show called Judge Dredd: Mega City One. The show is set in a future where the East Coast of the U.S. has become a crowded and crime-ridden megalopolis. It will be an ensemble drama about a team of Judges — futuristic cops invested with the power to be judge, jury, and executioner — as they deal with the challenges the future-shocked 22nd century throws at them.

The character of Dredd — who is known for his incorruptibility, harsh attitude towards law-breaking “perps,” and upper face-concealing helmet — was created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra in 1977 and first appeared in the British science fiction anthology comic 2000 AD, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Judge Dredd has twice been adapted for the big screen. Sylvester Stallone played the titular character in 1995’s Judge Dredd, while Karl Urban portrayed the role in 2012’s Dredd. Although the latter was a box office disappointment, the Alex Garland-scripted film has garnered a substantial cult following of fans thanks in large part to its faithful representation of the original material. While the show is still in the early stages of development, and no talent has yet been announced, today’s news will be music to the ears of many who were left wanting more onscreen Dredd after the release of the 2012 film.

Attached as executive producers of the new show are IM Global Television president Mark Stern, who developed Battlestar Galactica, Helix, and Defiance at Syfy; IM Global Television CEO Stuart Ford; and the owners of Rebellion, Jason and Chris Kingsley, who along with Ford were also executive producers of the 2012 Dredd film

“This is one of those seminal sci-fi properties that seems to only become and more relevant with age,” said Stern in a statement. “Not only is it a rich world with biting social commentary, but it’s also fun as hell! As a fan of the comics and both films, it’s a dream come true to be able to work with Jason and Chris in adapting this for television.”

“We’re very excited to be beginning the journey to get more of Judge Dredd’s Mega-City One on the television screen,” said Jason and Chris Kingsley said. “Thanks to the legions of fans who have kept up pressure on social media, and a lot of background work and enthusiasm, we aim to make a big budget production that will satisfy both our vast comics audience and the even greater general screen-watching public.”

Heh.

Another failed potential tentpole, going the route of a tv show.

Well, he did do Almost Human just a few years ago. It's not outside the realm of possibility.

I'll likely check out this one when it airs, but I'd rather see a sequel to the last movie.

Oh god that would be awesome, but I'm sure Almost Human left a bad taste in mouth...

The upside for Urban is that he could sign on & then just do voice-overs from Hawaii or wherever he's vacationing and no one would know the difference.

Sorry, but those are terrible ideas. First of all Dan Dare was in Eagle comics, not 2000AD. Secondly, the other characters you mentioned were in pretty much different realities or worlds. ABC Warriors were in the same universe as Nemesis the Warlock (now THATS a show i would love to see) and Rogue Trooper was its own thing (Another show that would be absolutely incredible). Also a show for Strontium Dog would be fantastic. 2000AD over the years has had at least 20 characters that are deserving of their own Movie/TV show.

No, we need storylines based around Chopper, The Dark Judges, Rico, The Judge Child, The Cursed Earth and The Apocalypse War.

A TV show for Dredd has massive potential.

Karl Urban says he's in talks to possibly return as Judge Dredd for this TV version:

Wow, if Urban does decide to do this I'm there. The violence also needs to be kept intact. This should be on a premium channel.

Re: Judge Dredd: Mega City One -- Live action TV series coming soon

Here's the latest update on this project from earlier this month. Karl Urban is apparently still in the mix to potentially return as Dredd:

http://comicbook.com/tv-shows/2018/0...y-one-tv-show/

ComicBook.com spoke with Urban, and he told us what he knows about the project, and what it will take to get him back under Judge Dredd’s helmet.

“No new news on that front,” Urban said. “My understanding of where they are in the process is that they are in development, and they are writing and developing a sort of 10-episode based television series called Mega-City One. And I told them, if they write some great material for Dredd, and give him a real purpose and a function, that I would love to come back and be a part of it. So, let's see what they do.”

Brian Jenkins, a producer on the new television series, has said previously that they’d be happy to have Urban back as Judge Dredd.

"We have had many conversations prior to this, about all sorts of things,” Jenkins said on the 2000 AD Thrill-Cast podcast. “He’s also very busy, a full-time professional actor. So we’re going to have some long and complicated conversations I would imagine, and we’ll see where we go. It’s too early to tell yet, but if we can use him and he’s available to us, then I think that would be absolutely brilliant. There’s always a possibility he will be busy, or that his schedule for other movies won’t allow- Basically, we don’t know at this stage."

Man, this show was originally announced almost 1 year ago. What the hell has taken so long for this to get off the ground?

If they could get Urban to come back my cheap ass might actually spring for a streaming service for once.

If they're trying to get Urban they should also get Olivia Thirlby as Anderson.
