Yet another Ad issue (autoplaying audio and video)

I'm starting a new thread because this is NOT about ads redirecting you to other sites.
This IS about ads that keep you on forum dot dvdtalk dot com, but suddenly start playing audio and video. I took a screencap of one as it started playing:

What is this bullshit? I've seen ads that just play video/animations, with the audio muted. Annoying, yes, but not a big deal. But these ads? Ads that suddenly start playing audio and video without clicking on them, or hovering over them, or anything?! Fuck all that. That's garbage-tier bullshit on par with what's going on in the other thread about getting redirected.

If you don't want users using adblockers, don't utilize ads like this.

This is happening for me on the desktop version of the site, using Chrome, on both Windows 7 and Windows 10, not that any of that should even matter.

edit: and to be clear, it's not EVERY ad that's doing this. Probably 1 in every 15 or 20. Banner ads shouldn't play audio, ever. Make it stop.

Yeah, this is new and NOT COOL! I don't mind ads on the site, but when they start talking (loudly), then we have a real problem on our hands.

Good to know it wasn't just me!
That said, it only happened about 10 times for me... haven't seen it since. Hopefully it stays that way.

Re: Yet another Ad issue (autoplaying audio and video)

Still happening. Usually at the bottom of the page. It autoplays audio and video. Sometimes, it causes my browser to outright hang for 10 to 30 seconds. Super annoying.

Re: Yet another Ad issue (autoplaying audio and video)

My system has been slowing to a crawl and is getting to be unusable. ONLY WITH DVDTALK. This is fucking horrible. Windows 10, Edge, plenty of memory.

I understand you need ad revenue. But when your system bogs down my entire computer so there is a 1 - 3 second delay when typing and I keep getting the (not responding) error, something is seriously FUBAR

Re: Yet another Ad issue (autoplaying audio and video)

Now the autoplaying video ads at the top of the page pop me back to the top of the page when they repeat.

This makes it hard to read posts.

Not to mention the other problems listed above.

Re: Yet another Ad issue (autoplaying audio and video)

I was trying to post this morning. That f'ing ad kept trying to play. It creates a 5 - 10 second delay when typing and drops letters randomly. This shit has to stop. This site has stopped being fun.

Re: Yet another Ad issue (autoplaying audio and video)

At least on the desktop... Chrome + AdBlock Plus. If IB has an issue with mentioning or using adblockers... well they can just take a look at the feedback forum and see why it's pretty much mandatory for viewing DVDTalk.

This wasn't happening to me for a long time and it's started up doing it lately again over the past few days worse than ever.

Re: Yet another Ad issue (autoplaying audio and video)

I came in here to report the other four times this happened tonight on other pages, and a Liberty ad is playing right now. And again (once on the top of the page, once on the bottom).

Re: Yet another Ad issue (autoplaying audio and video)

Nice loud Mazda ad yelling at me a few seconds back. Then this page wouldn't load, and now I can barely type this because of something trying to load from trk.vidible.tv.

Re: Yet another Ad issue (autoplaying audio and video)

Have just had my first auto-playing ad experiences this week. I have now muted the sound on my laptop.

The nice part is I now spend far less time on DVDTalk. As soon as it starts I bolt.

Man, it's really bad today. Talking over itself and glitching out the page. Make it stop!

Once again I am unable to post because of this crappy site. Could someone please email me when the issue has been corrected? Until then

Re: Yet another Ad issue (autoplaying audio and video)

Thanks guys. We're trying to swat the ads down as we see them but they are being fed by our ad networks and it is a little dicey getting them removed. Keep posting screenshots. This is the best way for us to combat them atm.

Is that really the best way though? Maybe it'd be better to put the onus on your ad network? Tell them that these bad ads have gone on long enough, and they need to weed them out themselves, or you'll drop them? Kind of like how DVDTalkers have dropped this site because the problems ads haven't been addressed?
