George Romero dead at age 77

RIP. Damn...
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment...story,amp.html

Legendary filmmaker George A. Romero, father of the modern movie zombie and creator of the groundbreaking “Night of the Living Dead” franchise, has died at 77, his family said.

Romero died Sunday in his sleep following a “brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer,” according to a statement to The Times provided by his longtime producing partner, Peter Grunwald. Romero died while listening to the score of one his favorite films, 1952’s “The Quiet Man,” with his wife, Suzanne Desrocher Romero, and daughter, Tina Romero, at his side, the family said.

One of the all-time greats. He changed horror. I can't even tell you how many times I've watched "Dawn", "Day", and "Creepshow".

Re: George Romero dead at age 77

Heh, I still remember seeing Night of the Living Dead on late night TV as a little kid and having the living bejeebus scared out of me. Had never seen anything like it before. It took the horror genre to extremes that it had dared not go before.

And then Dawn of the Dead came along several years later and kicked even more ass.

And let's not forget Martin, an underappreciated classic.

Mr. Romero, when you come back from the dead, please don't bite me.

Or better yet, Rest in Pieces

Knightriders is another non-zombie (in fact, non-horror) movie of his that I greatly enjoyed.

George Romero is the reason I pursued filmmaking as a career. I spoke with him on the phone once by accident and was able to work on reshoots of The Dark Half. This will hurt for a long time.

I watched Document of the Dead for last year's horror challenge. For me it was a nice insight into George Romero as a director and family man. He certainly touched many lives with his films and his presence.

RIP George

Re: George Romero dead at age 77

Wow. For some reason, this death shocks me. Was fully not expecting it- maybe because I read recently he was gearing up to make another zombie pic, The restored version of NOTLD is soon going to be in theaters and released by Criterion, and even Arrow is set to release a box set of his non zombie stuff.
Seemed like the Romero brand was on a recent upswing. And now he's not going to get to enjoy any of that.

Lung Cancer is a tough way to go too. RIP.

Re: George Romero dead at age 77

A true pioneer of the genre. "Dawn of the Dead" is still my favorite horror movie... just a blast to watch. I also lived for those "Tales from the Darkside" marathons on the Sci-Fi Channel when I was in middle school. The show may feel quaint and dated by today's standards, but I still love it.

Zombie flicks feel kinda played out at the moment, but those first three "Dead" films are classics. I was there opening weekend for "Land" and enjoyed it as well. "Diary" has the distinction of being the only movie I ever walked out on, but that was mainly because seeing all that shaky cam footage on the big screen made me nauseous.

Re: George Romero dead at age 77

For whatever reason, as an 8 year old kid obsessed with movies, George Romero was one of the first few director names I ever memorized and started learning what a film director does.

I remember PBS (or maybe public access) played Night of the Living Dead one night. I was hooked. That was my first zombie movie experience. More than the scares, I remember being heartbroken by that ending.

The next one I saw was Return of the Living Dead, which had me completely confused by the tonal shift. Then I later saw Dawn and Day, and learned about the continuity, and how Return was completely separate.

I remember his pending Resident Evil movie in the late 90's, and how it was stuck for so long. And then the Dawn remake was released, which seemed to open the floodgates for zombie movies. The Land came out (not sure if that was due to Dawn's success).

For making such a seminal films, you'd think he'd find funding for whatever he wanted.

The movie industry is a fickle business. Didn't help that George's recent projects failed to receive a strong critical or commercial reception. He appeared to be hustling right up to the end, trying to secure foreign backers for "Road of the Dead" and doing interviews to promote it as recently as this month. Another guy is directing, but Romero co-wrote the script and was going to be one of the producers.

RIP George. Thanks for the wonderful movies. You were the best. One of my all-time Comic-Con highlights.
