Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, THE BIG SICK tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan) after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents.
When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he's never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart. THE BIG SICK is directed by Michael Showalter (HELLO MY NAME IS DORIS) and producer by Judd Apatow (TRAINWRECK, THIS IS 40) and Barry Mendel (TRAINWRECK, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS).

Saw it last night. It was charming but not great, deserving of its high RT rating because it is a difficult film for anyone to actually dislike. Holly Hunter steals the show with a couple of truly excellent scenes.

saw this last Saturday night - really was very entertained by it all, great cast, smart writing, a little sadness - it felt very honest but still funny.

I think I know the whole plot after seeing Kumail promote the hell out of this on the late night talk show circuit and the Sam Jones interview on Directv.
Still a must see when it comes out on Blu-ray.

https://drafthouse.com/news/the-big-sick-menu-specials
Click the link for photos and descriptions of the food. I like Pakistani food but I imagine they will cut back on the heat it sometimes has.
This month in select Alamo Drafthouse locations we’re excited to feature a menu inspired by one of our favorite movies of the year, our Drafthouse Recommends selection THE BIG SICK. Produced by Judd Apatow and based on the actual (and unusual) courtship of comedian Kumail Nanjiani (SILICON VALLEY) and Emily Gordon (author, SUPER YOU). The film is hilarious, emotional, touching and very, very honest.
Menu specials available right now in Austin, Brooklyn and San Francisco locations, and beginning June 27th in Dallas, Denver, El Paso, Yonkers, Houston, Kansas City, Lubbock, and Phoenix. Please note: item availability may vary.

As part of the promotion, the Alamo Drafthouse's Facebook page has short clips of Kumail Nanjiani trying each portion of the menu and speaking on his memories tied to each dish.

Saw this a few days ago. My favorite movie of the year so far. Sweet, not overly Apatow-y.

Yes, definitely see it - this is a movie that isn't plot centric - you'll still enjoy the humour and heart of it all. A truly GREAT movie.

I heard this might be a Oscar contender.
It is a Lionsgate release and if 2018 is similar to 2017 it might receive some nominations.

Saw this earlier this morning.
The first quarter of the film felt really odd & clunky, with the Meet Cute not really hitting how it should've. I also understand their purpose in an Apatow-Production, but I could've done without all of Nanjiani's friends in the film, which is a shame because I enjoy Bo Burnham's Stand-Up.
The rest of the film, once the focus draws even more on Nanjiani's Pakistani Culture & family, as well on Nanjiani's interactions with Ray Romano & Holly Hunter, it's a much stronger film and one that I enjoyed a whole lot.

Please report back. I could see this being a mildly big hit when it goes wide, so to speak.
Is there a thread on here for the Aubrey Plaza nun comedy "The Little Hours" ?
I looked for it, but couldn't find it. But sometimes the search function doesn't show everything.

Caught this today. Liked it a lot and it's worthy of its extremely fresh rating. But like another person said, it's a comedy that doesn't go for low brow humor and has very likable characters, so it's hard to dislike. I knew little about it other than the trailers with Kumail and Romano introducing it, yet for some reason I was able to guess Apatow's involvement from the overlong run time.
I too see this movie possibly getting some Oscar recognition , most likely in the writing category and I hope in the supporting actor and actress categories for Romano and Hunter.

This was enjoyable, but not as good as I thought it was going to be. It was sweet and amusing. I thought Holly Hunter and Ray Romano were the best parts of the movie.

I think it was a cute watch, but nothing special. I didn't know anything about the movie going in and kind of saw it blindly on a whim as something to do, so I thought it would be funnier and not as dramatic and sad in some portions.
My favorite moments were Kumail and Emily dating and getting to know each other. I really liked the actress playing Emily though.

Saw this today. Definitely liked it, but as mentioned, it's a very hard movie NOT to like.
Weakest parts were Bryant/Burnham/Scenes at comedy club. Strongest scenes were once the family stuff kicked in (with his own family, and Hunter/Romano). The meeting Emily portion was ok - not great but not bad.
Had to be weird/surreal for Najiani to re-live this obviously crazy/important time in his life.
This movie has by far the best 9/11 joke I've ever heard. Not that you hear too many... But the writing and execution/delivery of the joke were top notch.

I really liked this, with the Romano/Hunter scenes being the standouts. Nanjiani definitely has the likability and charisma to be a solid lead. He's come a long way since Franklin & Bash. Glad to see it's doing well financially too.

I saw it yesterday and I really liked it. I thought both sets of parents/families were well cast. I'll probably get but this when it hits Blu-Ray.

I'm glad to see Nanjiani and Showalter finding some success. Forgot he did My Name Is Doris.
