10th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
It's that time again! Time for the 10th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 2017!
List Thread for 2017
Dates: Dusk June 30-Dawn August 1st
Rules
Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.
If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.
Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews. Documentaries include UFO and alien abduction type shows.
As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.
Use any counting method you prefer, as prize determination does not depend on number of items watched.
3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.
Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.
Watching multiple versions (theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.
How to win a prize
There's 1 way to get an entry:
Participate by watching at least 1 item (please number your lists!)
Audio:
Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio
I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.
If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.
1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.
1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.
3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.
1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.
*Exceptions:* 1: The Tarzan films are eligible to watch and count for the watch list, but not for the check list.
2. Superhero films. If they do not have a sci-fi/fantasy tag, they count for the watch list, but not for the check list.
Checklist:
2016's Discussion list.
Thanks to Hamilton Books and GoldenWheels for donating prizes for the challenge!
Prize pack one: Sword and Sorcery Collection: Roger Corman's Cult Classics, Neverland and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Extended Edition
Prize pack two: The Ray Harryhausen Collectible Gift Set and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Extended Edition
Prize pack three: Star Wars: Ships of the Galaxy, Tim Burton Film Favorites BR and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Extended Edition

Please let me know of any changes to the checklist that people would like to make! Or any suggestions, really, about it. I will finalize it a day or two before the challenge starts so people can work on their lists with it.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I can't wait. I've already found myself watching some sci-fi this month, just to whet my appetite. I also have made some purchases just for this Challenge. I found Dragonheart in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart, I bought the Buck Rogers In The 25th Century Complete Series Set on Blu Ray, and I plan to buy the Power Rangers Series Set that has the first 5 years, as well as use a $5 Video Credit off of a TV Season from Amazon to buy Season 3 of Babylon 5.

I do have a huge stack of Gundam blu-rays of series to watch/re-watch in HD for the first time. That should be a lot of fun depending how much time I have to get through some of them.

That being said, if you watch something and you think it qualifies, there are 3 wild cards you get for the month for the borderline movies. Also, feel free to ask here and I will make a final decision. I know last year, I made an exception for Tarzan. In general, I do believe Superhero movies would qualify even without the sci-fi/fantasy label, but try to follow the spirit of the law if you can.
Basically, I look at if there is anything fantastical or futuristic involved in the movie. Is there something that doesn't exist yet, or couldn't exist in real life? Yes? Then it likely will qualify.

Speaking of Gundam, I'm considering revisiting Gundam Wing, on Hulu, since I haven't seen it since its Toonami days on Cartoon Network.

Depends what genre the movie is considered to be. IMDb.com is the most used choice (I think, at least), to determine this. I know I go there first. So taking Iron Man as the example, the genres are listed as "action, adventure, sci-fi" so it would qualify. Don't forget that there is often more genres listed after the cast list. Looking at the 1989 Batman, it does not have a sci-fi or fantasy label, so it wouldn't technically qualify.

I had already decided to do a Babylon 5 re-watch for this challenge before Stephen Furst passed
Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember we had a superhero film debate the year one of the Batman films was released and a blanket decision was made to count them (I guess everyone who was going to see it in theaters wanted it to count - I think The Dark Knight was the film in question).

My memory is bad, so I myself don't remember off the top of my head, but I do remember during the Drive In Challenge back in April when someone asked about superhero movies, Caligula said best to save for July when they all count. That would explain that reasoning.

If anyone is interested in trying it out for the month, you can become a Coast Insider for $7.99 a month, which includes full archives available of the past five years I believe to choose from to listen to anytime you want. It is available on the computer, and Android. Perhaps iPhone too, but I don't know as I don't have an iPhone myself. I became a Coast Insider back in April and greatly enjoy 24 7 access to the show whenever I want, without having to limit myself to only listening in the middle of the night.

Yeah, I believe there was a blanket ruling on Superhero movies to allow them. Some things just have to meet the smell test. I remember one year Austin Powers was not listed as Sci-fi on IMDB despite involving time travel and sharks with frickin' lasers.

With the new season of Game of Thrones starting the 16th I'm planning a mega-marathon of S1-S6. I don't know yet if I'll start this month or wait for July, after all it's 60 episodes to get in over 16 days. It's doable but I'd pretty much have to put anything else on the back burner those two weeks.

Thanks, will add these to the memorial section!

Ok, added the exception for superhero movies to the rules. I did add that like Tarzan movies, that they will count for the watch lists but not the check lists if they do not have a sci-fi/fantasy genre tag.
Did update the memorial section, next year, I'll pare some down, but for now, I'll keep what we have already unless we add more names to it. Feel free to suggest more!

For anyone interested in seeing it next month, Kong: Skull Island is now available to buy digitally, and perhaps on DVD and Blu Ray as well. I just saw a big splash screen on the Xbox Store.

Thanks i think this makes sense given IMDV's inconsistency with the superhero genre labeling

Re: 10th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
OK, this is the first of what I hope are just a few questions about where movies fit. I would think that Edward Scissorhands fits in the Urban Fantasy catageory. Is this correct?

Re: 10th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
I finally decided to buy Xena: Warrior Princess on DVD. I was motivated when I noticed that the Complete Series Set was now OOP. So, with not knowing how much longer the individual Season Sets would be in stock at Amazon, especially since the Season 1-4 bundle only had 5 left in stock, I grabbed them while I had the chance.

Re: 10th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
I am looking forward to re-visiting that when it comes out on blu-ray. I think it is coming out later this year, although there isn't an official street date yet. I haven't watched it since the DVDs first came out around the same time you watched it, so I am really curious to see how it holds up. If you end up revisiting it on Hulu, I will be interested to see what you think.
