The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

Well I'm about to buy my first 3D set in a couple of weeks. Just ordered the Panasonic 210 BD and have Drive Angry and The Lion King in 3D.

Did some searching and didn't find much in terms of how the 3D population here likes certain discs so how about some of you post your favorite 3D Blu rays as far as 3D pop and implementation.

I don't even think the site really includes them in their reviews.

So lets have it what do you think are the best discs in terms of 3D?

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

If you want straight reviews, blu-ray.com has a section for those.

I'm building up my library for the media room I'll have built in my new home in a couple of months. So I've been reading up on the technology. Due to how fast paced the technology keeps changing and the types of TV's already out there (passive/active), I would think a lot pf people's opinions are based on what they have in addition to the disc itself.

Yes I've been to Blu ray and have read the reviews.

I'm fully aware that people might have different experiences with different hardware. I don't need it to be so technical.

Just which are your favorites and which ones aren't that great.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

Just ordered Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs and Open Season 3D. I heard the transfers were great and also Meatballs is on sale on Amazon for $19.99 and Open Season was $23.

I guess this thread was wasn't a good idea...

Not many people have or want 3D. I have it...but only watch a movie every once and a while.

The ones filmed in 3D are all pretty good with the "pop" you're looking for (Avatar, Resident Evil: Afterlife, Drive Angry, Saw, lots of animation) and the 3D converts vary from passable (Thor) to atrocious (The Last Airbender).

Yea I'm trying to keep to films shot in native 3D. I also ordered Lion King(I heard the 3D was perfect even thou it is a conversion ) with the overstock special. I already got Drive Angry when Amazon had it for $11. I will not be doing any of that 2D to 3D nonsense.

In case anyone is interested Amazon UK has Despicable Me 3D BD Region Free.

My total came out to $23.11. Not bad considering Amazon US has it for $35

Thanks for the misleading thread title. I thought Scent of Mystery was on the way.

The only thing I'll add is, before you buy a 3D movie, ask yourself if you would still buy it if it wasn't 3D. If the answer is no, you may regret it when the novelty wears off.

I don't know. I think there would be more people interested in going 3D if there wasn't so much expense associated with it, and that's in regards to both the equipment and the movies.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

I buy just about every 3D title that comes out because I'm a big fan of the technology. (When 3D first came out, I could care less about it, but after seeing a few demos I got suckered in.) I have a 65" Panny plasma with active glasses and the 3D is very good on that set.

Some of my favs so far:

Final Destination

Captain America

Ultimate Wave Tahiti

My Bloody Valentine

IMAX: Hubble Telescope

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs

Despicable Me

Avatar

Yogi Bear

Sanctum

Priest

(As a movie lover I favor live action over animation even though most of the best 3D movies are animation titles.)

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

From the 2010 & 2011 Spending Tabs:

12/16/10: Despicable Me / $49.99 / $21.99 / NBC Universal Store / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy
12/21/10: Step Up 3 / $49.99 / $19.99 / Best Buy / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy

01/11/11: Piranha 3D / $39.95 / $20.49 / Borders / Includes Blu-ray 3D
01/25/11: Saw: The Final Chapter / $49.99 / $4.99 / Amazon / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy
03/29/11: Tangled / $49.99 / $16.99 / Amazon / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy
04/05/11: Tron: Legacy / $49.99 / $15.99 / Target / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy
10/04/11: Beauty and the Beast / $49.99 / $21.99 / Amazon / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy
10/04/11: The Lion King / $49.99 / $21.99 / Amazon / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy
10/06/11: Thor / $54.99 / $19.99 / Overstock / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy
10/25/11: Captain America: The First Avenger / $54.99 / $19.99 / Overstock / Includes Blu-ray 3D + DVD + Digital Copy

As it stands right now, my pre-order for the five-disc (BD 3D+BD+DVD+DC) combo pack of Cars 2 has dropped down to $19.99 based upon Amazon's (brief) $7 off coupon for pre-ordering early.

One doesn't need to spend twenty bucks or more on 3D titles. You just need to keep your eye out for good deals or hold out. When Amazon puts Disney combo packs up for pre-order, they'll also attach a limited time coupon that sometimes manages to be far greater than the Disney coupon at release (i.e. Cars 2, Tangled). The only catch is you need to pre-order it before they pull the coupon, which usually happens within a day or two of the pre-orders going live.

While I also hold the agreement that I don't want any post-converted 3D films in my collection, in the cases where I do own the films, it came out cheaper to own them in the 3D combo pack.

In terms of live action, Step Up 3 has amazing 3D and it's a perfect demo disc as Disney gave it a flawless transfer alongside a 7.1 soundtrack. I've had friends come over to watch it and they're impressed by the 3D. In terms of animation, Despicable Me looks great... but as others have mentioned, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King are pretty phenomenal too.

I really liked Megamind in 3D, but my favorite 3D program so far has been a British TV show called Brian May's Brief History of 3D (yes, the Queen guitarist -- he's a big collector). It's very well done and shows just how old the 3D "fad" is.

I would never buy a movie I didn't like just for 3D or reference quality stuff.

Computer animated movies have the best 3D pop-out effect IMHO. I own these: Tangled, Despicable Me, How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind, Open Season, Monsters vs. Aliens, Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaur, and Shrek Forever After. I have the first 3 Shrek movies in 3D too, but they were conversions and the 3D effects aren't as good as the fourth Shrek. Same with Lion King and Beauty & the Beast 3D. Of course, Avatar looks great in 3D. I wish I could say the 3D effects in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides impress, but there are few pop out moments.

Re: The Official "3D" Blu ray Thread. Now with Smell-O-Vision.

Got my TV on friday Vizio e3d420vx and wow I'm impressed with this TV at the price point. Everything was a breeze to setup calibration was straight forward and without complications. 3D is terrific on this passive set. So far I have have seen Lion King, Drive Angry, Monster House on Vudo 1080P 3D and Captain America.

For $629 you can't beat this set if your looking for something for a smaller room.

And sorry I can't bring myself to watch any Step Up movie. I don't care how great the 3D is.

Technically all CGI movies are converted to 3D. However, it's easier than live action cos all you gotta do is render alternate frames.

Those first three Shreks were not composed with 3D in mind (like Toy Story 1 & 2). So, rerendering them in 3D does not pack the same punch as the 4th Shrek or 3rd Toy Story has. I think that's what Joe Schmoe meant.

Pretty decent deal going on at Best Buy currently. $40 off if you buy 4 3D combo packs. Selection includes all 3 Toy Stories, Bolt, Chicken Little, and Cars 2 and G-Force. Comes out to $19.99 each except for Cars 2 which would be $29.99.

Do you know if that sale works in-store also? To bad "Meet the Robinsons" doesn't qualify.

Do all of the Toy Story releases contain all of the content from their previous Blu-ray releases?

Yes, the Toy Story Blu-ray discs are the same as the previous Blu-ray release. They simply have an additional Blu-ray 3D disc added to them (plus Digital Copy).
