RIP - Powers Boothe

Powers Boothe, 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' and 'Sin City' Actor, Dies at 68

Powers Boothe, a character actor who appeared in films like Sin City and TV shows including Deadwood and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., died Sunday morning in his sleep of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles. He was 68.

His rep told The Hollywood Reporter that a private service will be held in Boothe's home state of Texas, with a memorial celebration under consideration as well. Donations can be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which honors the nation's defenders, veterans, first responders, their families and those in need.

His friend, actor Beau Bridges, tweeted the news Sunday afternoon:

It's with great sadness that I mourn the passing of my friend Powers Boothe. A dear friend, great actor, devoted father & husband.

- Beau Bridges (@MrBeauBridges) May 14, 2017

Boothe, who grew up on a farm in the Lone Star State, began his acting career in the theater, playing in a number of Shakespearean productions including Henry IV. He made his Broadway debut in the late '70s in Lone Star & Pvt. Wars.

In 1980, he won an Emmy for lead actor in a limited series or special for playing cult leader Jim Jones in CBS' Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones. He won that award during an actors strike and chose to cross the picket line to accept his trophy, saying, "This may be either the bravest moment of my career or the dumbest."

Boothe also was nominated two ensemble SAG Awards, first in 1996 alongside the cast of Nixon and then again in 2007 with the cast of Deadwood.

Boothe gained a reputation for playing villains with memorable roles in action film Sudden Death (1995), Bill Paxton's Frailty (2001) and the nefarious Senator Roark in Sin City (2005). Perhaps his most famous villain role was Cy Tolliver, the ruthless saloon owner on Deadwood.

More recently, Boothe took on the role of Gideon Malick as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting the role on The Avengers and reprising it on ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

He portrayed Alexander Haig in Nixon (1995) and a sheriff in another Oliver Stone film, U Turn (1997) and was unforgettable as the wicked gunman Curly Bill Brocius in Tombstone (1993).

He also played Connie Britton's father, the industrialist and former mayor Lamar Wyatt, on Nashville and portrayed Noah Daniels, the vice president and then the U.S. president, on 24.

As much as I love him in Deadwood, I'll never forget Power's five second role as the guy who sells Al Pacino his "water sports" hankie in Cruising.

He was awesome.

It's beyond time for a decent region 1 version of Extreme Prejudice.

Man, that's like punching God in the face.

I first became a fan as a boy watching his Phillip Marlowe PI series in the early days of HBO.
And he was an awesome bad guy on 24.

one of my favourite character actors ever. Terrible news. Honestly when I saw that he died of natural causes I was surprised. He looks and talks like a guy who smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day for 40 years.

"Natural causes" just means death occurred because of organ failure, rather than something like falling from a great height, or being murdered. 68 really isn't that old for someone in this day and age.

That was the first thing I thought of, too.

What a great character actor. I loved a lot of his performances, but that one (Tombstone) was one of his best.

Re: RIP - Powers Boothe

For some reason, I always think of The Emerald Forest first when I think of Boothe, perhaps because it was one of his rare starring roles. Not a great film, overall, but elevated by Boothe's performance.

Re: RIP - Powers Boothe

He's done a lot of great movies, but for me its Rapid Fire and Sudden Death. I watched the hell out of those as a kid. He was a great bad guy in Sudden Death. RIP

His presence made anything he was in better, even in small roles.

Re: RIP - Powers Boothe

Damn, I first became a fan of his after watching him in 2 of Walter Hill's movies from the 80s - Southern Comfort and Extremem Prejudice. Great roles in Red Dawn, Tombstone, Emerald Forest, Nixon, etc as well. He was good in Blue Sky too - starring Tommy Lee Jones and Jessica Langue - a movie I remember renting on video back in the mid-90s.

RIP

Re: RIP - Powers Boothe

Shit... if you were in Tombstone and were linked to the MCU, it may not be your year. Please don't take Kurt Russell.

I'd put money on Val Kilmer being next though (no MCU link).
