Of course this is going to come off like a hater but...not good. Bad album title, bad art, bad singing, bad kick drum sound, vanilla forgettable riffs...damn I wish I could like it. I'll check out the album, but sounds like we're going on 20+ years of bad Metallica music.

I like the first single, can't wait for the album. Also the production isn't Death Magneticized.

Confirmed... not an edit, actual song length
HARDWIRED
Written by Hetfield/Ulrich
ln the name of desperation
ln the name of wretched pain
ln the name of all creation
Gone insane
We're so fucked
Shit outta luck
Hardwired to self-destruct
On the way to paranoia
On the crooked borderline
On the way to great destroyer
Doom design
We're so fucked
Shit outta luck
Hardwired to self-destruct
Once upon a planet burning
Once upon a flame
Once upon a fear returning
All in vain
Do you feel that hope is fading?
Do you comprehend?
Do you feel it terminating?
ln the end
We're so fucked
Shit outta luck
Hardwired to self-destruct
Hardwired to self-destruct
Self-destruct
Self-destruct

Again with the terrible sounding drums!
Very vanilla first song. Hope some of the others are better.

Agreed 100%. Every riff has to be some derivative of E with a flatted 5th. It would be nice to hear some lower or alternate tunings. Doesn't have to be crazy 8-string low but just something different.

Awful album title.
Awful cover artwork. Can't they afford to hire a fucking artist? Remember when heavy metal bands had awesome covers? Maiden, Priest, 80s Metallica? You know, the kind of covers that you'd see that made you want to hear the album?
"Hardwired" sounds like St. Anger: The Return.
Jesus, guys, go out and buy copies of "Blackwater Park" and remember when you used to make albums like that.

The song didn't do much for me, I'll still hold out hope for the best on the album. It's interesting that their peers are putting out top tier material, the latest from Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus, Overkill, Testament, Slayer, etc are some of their best. Ì keep hoping that Metallica can rediscover how to get the magic back in their songwriting

Yikes, not sure where they are headed with this. Is this a leftover from St. Anger? As much as I hate to say it, the band going to therapy and giving up drinking together, they've lost their edge.

Geez, lotta haters up in here.
I'm digging the shit out of this. Simple, thrashy, vocals are solid, Lars' drums sound like Lars' drums. I'm stoked on this and for the album.

Yeah it definitely sounds like a follow up to Death Magnetic. I like it. Hopefully this is the worst song on the album.

The thing with Metallica is that they obviously grew out of metal a long time ago. Megadeth didn't, Anthrax didn't, Slayer didn't, but Metallica did. It happens. The problem with that is, the Metallica brand is metal. So they probably feel somewhat obligated to honor the Metallica brand for financial and fan base reasons. My favourite music the band has made in the past 20 years has been some of the b sides that were featured in the Some Kind of Monster doc while they were recording St Anger. It was so different from anything they had ever done. I think if they followed the muse and just forgot about what Metallica is "supposed" to be, they could make some really great music. That said, I actually dig this song and I dug Death Magnetic, but their first 5 albums still stand pretty tall compared to everything else they've ever done. I mean they could live to 150 and they'll never recapture their early sound.

Why would you completely deflate the kick drum like that!?
For contrast, go listen to the sound quality and playing on the new Megadeth.

They come from different eras, but I keep thinking about Opeth and their transition away from their "signature" sound. Mikael doesn't seem to give a shit at all about what people think of his music - he just puts out what he likes. And I love what he's done with the last few albums. There's obviously still a creative spark there.
Conversely, I feel like this return to their "roots" for Metallica is a very calculated move to bring in maximum revenue. The music on DM and now this just lacks that intangible vibe that bands who are still emotionally invested in the genre produce. Put simply, this sounds like paint-by-numbers metal.
I don't want them to release Master of Puppets II, because it would be as shitty as Operation: Mindcrime II. I just want to hear something genuinely creative and inspired. And I'm not hearing that from this song. Maybe there'll be better material...we shall see. (I must use ellipses in all Metallica posts now.)
