PRINCE: "Prince 4Ever" 2CD Greatest Hits / "Purple Rain" 2CD Deluxe
http://www.billboard.com/articles/ne...le-rain-deluxe
The 40-track greatest-hits album, Prince 4Ever, is due on Nov. 22 in the U.S. (Nov. 25 in other territories) and features his best-known songs -- including "1999," "When Doves Cry," "U Got the Look," "Diamonds and Pearls," "Nothing Compares 2 U" and many more -- along with the previously unreleased "Moonbeam Levels." That song, which has been available on bootlegs since the '80s and was even covered by Elvis Costello at a Prince tribute concert, was recorded in 1982 during the 1999 sessions and was considered for the unreleased 1989 album Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic -- not to be confused with the similarly-named Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic album released a decade later -- several songs from which eventually appeared on the Batman and Graffiti Bridge soundtrack albums. (That preceding sentence should give an idea of the size and complexity of Prince's recorded work, which sprawls across four decades.) Nearly every other track on Prince 4Ever was released as a single at one time or another, apart from a few album cuts like "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" and the 1981 B-side "Gotta Stop (Messin' About)." The package contains a 12-page booklet with previously unpublished photos by Herb Ritts. (The full track listing appears below.)

Even more tantalizing is the remastered Purple Rain deluxe edition, slated for release early next year. While details are incomplete, the set will include "a second album of previously unreleased material," according to the press release, which also notes that plans for the set "were agreed with Prince before he passed away." As for what that second album might include, multiple unreleased contemporaneous tracks -- such as "Electric Intercourse," "G-Spot," "Father's Song," "Wednesday," "All Day, All Night" and "Possessed" -- have appeared on bootlegs or were re-recorded with different Prince-related acts.
Also, several full concerts from the Purple Rain era were professionally recorded, including a March 1985 show that was released on the now out-of-print home video Prince and the Revolution: Live; B-sides from the era such as "17 Days" and two versions of "God" either appeared in the film or are commonly associated with the album.
Both albums will be released by Prince's NPG Records with Warner Bros., the label to which he was signed for the first half of his professional career. All of the songs on Prince 4Ever date from his Warner Bros. era, which spanned from his signing in 1977 until 1996.
The albums represent the first releases since Prince's death from an accidental overdose on April 21 and are likely the first of many to come from the singer's vast archive of recordings. The advisers to his estate, Charles Koppelman and L. Londell McMillan, are currently considering proposals to license more material, which includes both previously unreleased music as well as catalog items.

I dig the order they placed the songs and I appreciate they added Batdance, Glam Slam and Moonbeam Levels. But no greatest hits of Prince will ever fully please. His b-sides are legendary (God - even though I think it was a b-side for good reason, Girl, She's Always in my Hair), and would greatly benefit as a stand alone release.

As much as I love his music to be put out there, another hits album that is less than 3 discs is totally pointless. Even if this one has a better song selection than the other two disc set.
Far better to just re-release each album with the b-sides and rarities, or put out a big box set.

I would love to hear crystal clear version of the extended versions of "Delirious" and "Take Me With U" just to name a 100 bootlegs out there.

Agreed! Give me those songs and any unreleased songs recorded during that time and I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Doesn't have to be just Prince stuff either, if Wendy & Lisa has some buried stuff from that time frame I would love to hear it.

Few people buy CDs any more. That fact combined with the fact that there are already other compilations out there of this material make this is pointless for most people. Hits / B-Sides is inarguably a better compilation anyway
Prince was out of touch about the realities of the internet and as a result no one will hear his music until his estate embraces streaming. My kids have no idea who Prince is because he went to such lengths to keep himself off of the internet. It's a shame.

Re: PRINCE: "Prince 4Ever" 2CD Greatest Hits / "Purple Rain" 2CD Deluxe
For my tastes, this is just an almost-total rehash of the Hits/B-Sides collection, as Hiro11 pointed out. Any real Prince fan already has all this music.
The sad thing is he actually FULLY embraced the internet early on. The NPG Music Club is how I got my tickets to see the Musicology show in 2004. It was not long after that that he dumped it all for some reason. My theory is that he underestimated just how easy it is for music to get passed around, copied, stolen, whatever, and with how tight of control he keeps on everything, he probably decided the best thing to do was just cut it completely off. It's sad, because he alienated pretty much his entire fan base by taking away access to him and everything he had to offer at the time and in the future. I have no doubt that he would have remained as huge as he was in 2004, and probably more, if he would have just gotten with the times.

Prince mentioned that Purple Rain set in interviews before he died. It's been in the works for years and I hope it is appropriately epic. Also I hope it gets a vinyl release.

What we desperately need is a compilation of all of Prince's extended mixes, many of which differ significantly from the album versions of the songs and are often superior.

Re: PRINCE: "Prince 4Ever" 2CD Greatest Hits / "Purple Rain" 2CD Deluxe
at this rate, I think it safe to say that the bulk of prince's unreleased tracks will not see an official light of day in my lifetime. after all this wait, one unreleased tracks tacked onto another hits cd, this is ridiculous. to keep my purchases legit, how many hits compilations must I continue to buy? and you would think at this point, some sort of deal would be worked out with the major streaming services to make all the previously released run of the mill selections more easily acessable to fans that want to listen on the go, even the surviving beatles have done this, one of the last major hold-outs

Be patient. You're acting like he died 5 years ago. These things take time. And I'm not saying you're wrong. Maybe we never will get the releases you crave, but it's a little early to say, "If it hasn't happened yet it never will."

It's amusing to see Batdance at #1. I'm sure it belongs there. It was a massive global hit, but what a silly song.

I remember Get Off getting a lot of play on MTV. I think he performed it live at a MTV Awards show.
