Maybe being sick for most the week that I read this was a factor, but didn't enjoy this nearly as much as the first book in the series.

This is the second book of Scalzi's that I've read (after Redshirts). Good book, fast reading, even if I'm not a particular fan of military sci-fi.

You should definitely check out Lock In. That one might be my favorite Scalzi.

Re: What Are You Reading? (March 2017)

I got about 2/3rds through 1632 and abandoned ship. It started pretty well and just got tediously uninteresting.

The premise was interesting: take a 21st Century West Virginia small town and mysteriously drop it into the middle of the Holy Roman Empire during the Thirty Years War, immediately creating an alternate timeline.

It never fulfilled the promise of the premise. At least, not enough to keep me reading.

Was closer to the end of that than I thought, so I think I'll move on to this

This is a collection of the 3 "Dunk and Egg" novellas. I really enjoyed it. Nice to read GRRM stories that have an end (even though the story can, and obviously does, continue these are nicely self-contained).

I've had the 6 paperbacks in the series on my bookshelf (picked up cheap from used bookstores) for years. Finally going to give a shot to reading them.

Awesome Curious how this series is. Definitely has a cult/genre following. Have been meaning to track these down to read as well.

Amazon has the Kindle version of the omnibus edition (all 6 books in one) for $9.99.

These seems like one of those series where I'll need to wait until finishing the whole thing before rendering a review. The books are not at all stand-alone (it's more like a gigantic 900+ page single story).

So far so good though. It's certainly a slow-burn, with the story just being set up in the first book. Being in the process of watching the old Dark Shadows series on DVD (I'm around episode 350 now), there seem to be a number of parallels between that and the Blackwater series. And from Michael McDowell's birth year, he would've been the perfect age (late high school, early college) for someone to get into that show when it aired new. Instead of New England gothic we have Southern gothic. Both are set in a small working-class town, where the main characters are the wealthy family that pretty much runs the town. Against a melodramatic soap-opera backdrop of family conflict, a new family member is suddenly and mysteriously introduced ... a person who generates strong responses of either love or hate. And of course, it turns this new character is not human and has a tendency to make very bad things happen to those that threaten them. In Dark Shadows, Barnabas is a vampire. In Blackwater ... well, it hasn't been revealed yet exactly what Elinor is.

Thanks . . . I'm intrigued by your description and I see that McCammon offered a review.
