Primary was Genesis. Then when I saw Super Mario World I was pretty impressed by the "scaling" effects. Graphic effects that were only found on Arcade machines. At that time Genesis couldn't do scaling effects like SNES.
Scaling was always found on Sega arcade games like Altered Beast and Alien Syndrome, Outrun, Daytona 500 etc. Those arcade effects however were never transitioned well on the home Genesis console. I think Genesis started incorporating SNES like effects in their 16MB and 32MB cartridges.
What fucked up SNES was the slow processor which couldn't handle many moving pixels on the screen. Super Ghouls n Ghosts which was graphically nice had horrible slow down enough to kill the mood to play the game. Actrasier was another one and many more.
Both systems were flawed. SNES was more powerful (graphics were more arcade like due to the higher colors over Genesis). In the end SNES had more fun titles including a whole slew of RPG games.

I did Genesis, but i couldn't tell you why exactly? In fact not sure why I got any of the systems I did through the years. Hmmm...

Genesis. The only Nintendo console I have ever owned was a Game Boy Advance SP.

Sega Genesis.
I had an NES prior, but Sega's advertising had me thinking that the Genesis was the "cool" system.

Genesis. Had an NES first and got the Genesis as a Christmas gift. I don't recall asking for one really though. I think my grandparents knew my brother and I liked video games and got it for us. Never owned Super Nintendo but always kind of wanted one.

SNES. There was a Genesis in my home, but it was my brother's and I barely played it. RPG is my favorite genre, so it was no contest for me.

SEGA! I'm sure mostly due to the commercials and info I had at the time.
I got into the 16-bit gen kinda late, after the Model 2 and Sega CD had come out.

We had both, and I don't think we really favored one over the other. Having both also allowed my brother and I to rent a game for each so we could each play them independently.

Genesis all the way. When I found out Nintendo was censoring their version of Mortal Kombat, they lost me. I never did buy another Nintendo system (after the NES) until the Wii. Then I realized my mistake and wondered why the fuck I drank the Kool-Aid and bought it.

SNES. Had a Genesis (along with the CD player and 32X ) later on but I was always Nintendo first.

SNES all the way. Hard to beat Nintendo's IPs. I didn't care about sports or fighting games so the Genesis had little appeal for me.

We only owned a SNES in my family. I played Genesis at friend's houses, but we picked SNES for Street Fighter and Legend of Zelda.

While the Genesis was the better machine overall for sports games, Ken Griffey Jr. baseball was the goat of 16-bit baseball games IMO.

When it was current generation, I owned the Genesis. I really enjoyed it. When I was older, I acquired a SNES and I preferred it to the Genesis. But I enjoyed both consoles for the time I owned them.
