Set in 1813, Taboo, was created by Knight based on an original story by Hardy and his father, Chips Hardy. The project centers on James Keziah Delaney (Hardy), a rogue adventurer who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire and finds himself playing a very dangerous game. Executive producing the series are Ridley Scott and Kate Crowe for Scott Free; Tom Hardy and Dean Baker for Hardy Son & Baker; Steven Knight; and Gene Stein for Sonar.

It's filming next year and expected to air in 2016. 8 episodes will be filmed.

Tom Hardy is quickly becoming the most overrated actor in the world today. His reputation far exceeds his ability.

FX has set the premiere date for Taboo, the new drama series starring Tom Hardy and created by Steven Knight with Hardy and his father Chips Hardy, on Tuesday, January 10 at 10 PM et/pt. Set in 1814, Taboo follows "James Keziah Delaney," a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father's shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself. But his father's legacy is a poisoned chalice, and with enemies lurking in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence. Encircled by conspiracy, murder and betrayal, a dark family mystery unfolds in a combustible tale of love and treachery. In addition to Tom Hardy, Taboo also stars Jonathan Pryce, Oona Chaplin, Stephen Graham, Michael Kelly, Jessie Buckley, David Hayman, Tom Hollander, Jason Watkins, Franka Potente, Jefferson Hall, Ed Hogg, Leo Bill, Christopher Fairbank, Richard Dixon, Mark Gatiss, Nicholas Woodeson, Lucian Msamati, and introducing Robert Parker.

The promos are certainly compelling, though they're almost entirely about creating an atmosphere, and not very revealing of the actual story and how it plays out.

The production values on this look fantastic , but something about it just isn't screaming out to me to watch.

The name Steven Knight didn't really ring a bell. For some reason I kept thinking Steven DeKnight (the creator of Spartacus)

Looks like Knight wrote Allied (which I saw) and the Tom Hardy movie Locke (didn't see) and created the UK series Peaky Blinders.

Decent resume. I set the DVR to record this. But, period shows are a really tough sell for U.S. viewers. Look at what happened to The Bastard Executioner.

The pedigree for this is great and I'm a big Hardy fan. That being said, the trailers surprisingly don't do anything for me.

Yeah I had zero interest based on the trailers but the EW write up that discussed the back story has me intrigued enough to give it a go.

I think I counted 3 fucks, 2 cocks, and 2 ******s. Wow.

I'm in for the duration. Great introductory episode -- planted enough seeds for the future but gave enough ground so viewers weren't completely lost. The atmosphere is fantastic and the production values are damned good. This is going to be a tough one to wait a week for.

They are promoting this as season 1, so I'm not expecting any resolution after just 8 episodes (though I would probably prefer it be an 8 and done).

Is Tom Hardy the greatest grunter ever?

The beginning hooked me. Production values for this looked like a movie. Intriguing story so far.
