at first I was like..uhh..but about halfway through the first trailer it hit me. This could be good.

How did folks feel about this that were fans of the original anime/manga? It's almost hard to imagine...were the original creators involved much in the making of it?

Most of the time these live-action adaptations aren't supervised by the original manga/anime creators. Though Japanese live-action adaptations always tread far closer to their source material than say Hollywood, which doesn't care one bit about sticking close to the original.

I saw it at a film festival a few years ago and, as a fan of the anime, I was pleasantly surprised with how good the live-action version is. I have it on DVD and need to watch it again. There are sequels to it also, which I haven't yet seen.
