I read a lot of comics this year. These were my favorites. What were yours?

The graphic novels that released in 2016 were overall very strong. I had a tough time picking out the best which is why the list is longer than normal (and I combined things too). To be honest I still have some in my "unread" stack so they didn't even get considered. But there should be something for everyone below.

RANK Title(amazon link) Creators
[cover]
comments

*the link is just to make it easier to find - I don't get anything from it.

01 Star Wars -- The New Canon, Year 2 by Jason Aaron, Kieron Gillen, Charles Soule, Stuart Immonen, Simone Bianchi, Lenil Frances Yu, Mike Deodato, Salvador Larroca, Alex Maleev, Phil Noto and more

I've been working hard to keep up with the new canon. Marvel under Disney did just as well if not better this year than last year. They really put their top talent on it which is so cool. On top of reading every single comic they published, I also watched every episode of Rebels and I've read four of the novels so far. The novels are where I am falling way behind cause they take so much longer.

02 Justice League -- The Darkseid War by Geoff Johns, Jason Fabok et al.

This is unfortunately the end of Geoff Johns' run I believe. But Jason Fabok is the new artist and he is incredible. There are a lot of twists and turns in this but most importantly a ton of heart. He'll be missed.

03 Superman -- American Alien by Max Landis et al.

I don't really like Max Landis the person, but man do I love this comic. One of the all time great Superman comics. Every issue is illustrated by a different famous artist.

04 The Amazing Spider-Man -- Worldwide by Dan Slott, Giuseppe Camuncoli et al.

Dan Slott continues his defining run on Spidey. The best I've read other than JMS back in the day. This time around, Peter decides to start selling his inventions and then using the profits to be Spiderman across the globe. The art inside is a lot better than these covers.

05 Star Trek -- Kelvin Timeline, Year 4 by Mike Johnson et al.

I am a big fan of Star Trek and what Mike Johnson does with it every year. Whether or not you like the recent movies, these are great continuations of them. They even encounter the mirror universe.

06 Guardians Of The Galaxy -- New Guard and Groot by Brian Michael Bendis, Valerio Schiti, Jeff Loveness, Brian Kesinger and more

The team members have grown from what's in the films, with some brilliant additions like Thing, Venom, Angela and Kitty Pryde. The inside art is way better than the covers. And Groot is flat out moving.

07 Inhumans by Charles Soule et al.

Once you read what Charles Soule is doing here, you''ll be ok with Marvel focusing on the Inhumans instead of the Xmen. Their numbers are growing around the world and they are trying to manage all the new powered people.

08 Silver Surfer by Dan Slott and Mike Allred

This is exactly like Doctor Who, except better cause of superheroes. Dan Slott for the win again, this time with unique art by the Allreds.

09 Paper Girls by Brian K Vaughan and Cliff Chiang

If there's one series you'll find on all the major book lists of the year, it's this one by BKV and Cliff Chiang. I've seen it compared to Stranger Things, except original.

10 Wonder Woman -- Earth One by Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette

The long awaited self contained WW book brings some of the ideas from the original creator to the modern times thanks to this all star creative team.

11 Judge Dredd by John Wagner, Henry Flint, Arthur Wyatt and more

Dredd travels to a prison on a moon of Jupiter in the first two, and Karl Urban's movie version returns in the second two.

12 Star Trek -- New Visions by John Byrne

The lost episodes continue and these two volumes contain a bunch of stories. If you are a fan of TOS this is a must buy.

13 Public Relations by Matthew Sturges, Dave Justus, David Hahn, Jose Marzan Jr and Annie Wu

By far the funniest comic I've read in ages. A big city PR firm gets hired to help a fantasy kingdom after some bad press. Fish out of water and lots of clever wordplay.

14 Letter 44 by Charles Soule, Alberto Alburquerque and Dan Jackson

Reading a comic book about politics may not sound that interesting to you. But when it's current times and we discover a spaceship in our solar system, the plot is hard to put down.

15 Deadpool V. Gambit by Ben Acker, Ben Blacker and Danilo Beyruth

Action packed and hilarious. These two characters make a great duo.

16 Buffy and Angel -- Season 10 and High School by Christos Gage, Rebekah Isaacs, Victor Gischler, Will Conrad, Faith Erin Hicks, Kel McDonald, Yishan Li and more

Believe it or not they are still continuing the TV shows. With a couple volumes of untold flashbacks to the early days too.

17 Black Bag by Chris Roberson and JB Bastos

How does a normal woman get pulled into the world of contract killings?

18 Daredevil vs Punisher by Charles Soule and Szymon Kudranski

So much better than the Punisher that was on the DD Netflix show. Soule knows how to get to the essence of these characters.

19 Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic

The only Marvel output by Hickman and Ribic this year, two of my all time favorite creators. It's really good but if you haven't read all the lead-up you'll likely be lost.

Re: I read a lot of comics this year. These were my favorites. What were yours?

Part two...

20 Batman & Robin -- Eternal by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV et al.

What secret does Batman know about the creation of each of his Robins? What will happen when they learn it? You can't go wrong with Snyder and Tynion, two of the best Batman writers.

21 4001 AD by Matt Kindt, Robert Venditti, Jeff Lemire et al.

I thought this was a very interesting event, showing the earth almost 2K years in the future after Japan becomes a country orbiting the planet.

22 Fight Club 2 by Chuck Palahniuk and Cameron Stewart

Looking at the reviews online, this was even more divisive than the movie. But I liked it and recommend it if you want more of those characters. It's also a sequel to the original novel.

23 Vote Loki by Christopher Hastings, Langdon Foss et al.

In a year when someone like Trump can be elected President, why can't someone like Loki? Check out the parallels.

24 Invincible by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, Corey Walker et al.

A typical solid entry by a great creative team. Probably not a good starting point.

25 The Shadow -- The Death Of Margo Lane by Matt Wagner

Wagner is my favorite Shadow comics creator. I didn't love this as much as last year's with Grendel, but it was still impressive.

26 Iron Man by Brian Michael Bendis et al.

Bendis attempts to make Stark more likeable, and largely succeeds. This arc is a lot better than the last few years of Iron Man comics so far.

27 Divinity 2 by Matt Kindt, Trevor Hairsine et al.

The sequel to the popular story about a modern day version of the world but where the superpowers and extra terrestrials are Soviets.

28 Cognetic by James Tynion IV and Eryk Donovan

A unique tale that spans the ages of humanity to explore some crazy things happening today.

29 Venus by Rick Loverd, Huang Danlan and Marcio Menyz

A mission to Venus, what could go wrong?

30 Savage Dragon by Erik Larsen

TSD still going strong with no signs of stopping. Decent jumping on point.

31 The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard

By this point you know what you're getting with TWD and if it's something you'd enjoy.

32 Silk by Robbie Thompson et al.

This is a new Spider-man family character that I love. Her roots go all the way back to the Ezekial comics and I think she is so interesting and well written. For example when she and Peter are in physical proximity of each other they have a literal animal (insect) magnetism that pulls them together to mate.

33 Lois & Clark by Dan Jurgens and Lee Weeks

The Superman you grew up with is still out there. Married to Lois and they have a son, Superboy!

34 Birthright by Joshua Williamson, Andrei Bressan and Adriano Lucas

Two new volumes of the fascinating story where a fantasy world collides with ours.

35 Avengers -- All New All Different by Mark Waid, Mahmud Asrar, Adam Kubert et al.

This version of the Avengers is all the young heroes, like a Marvel attempt at the Teen Titans. I highly recommend it even if you don't know all the characters because Mark Waid writes them so well. The inside art is better than these covers.

36 Descender by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen

What happens to all the robots who are left after they lose the robot uprising? Some moving entries in the still going series.

37 Klaus by Grant Morrison and Dan Mora

Just what is the origin story of Santa anyway? A clever plot by GM with some great art by DM.

38 The Beauty by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley

There's a new STD going around, except everyone knows when you have it because it turns you into a supermodel looking version of your regular self. Sounds good until the infected start dying.

39 Nova by Sean Ryan, Cory Smith et al.

If you liked last year's great Nova stories you should definitely continue even with the new creative team. The human rocket balances school and being a hero while searching for his dad.

40 Spider-Man -- Miles Morales by Brian Michael Bendis, Sara Pichelli et al.

The Ultimate universe is gone and Miles is now in the 616. Bendis and Pichelli are always a great team.

41 The Black Road by Brian Wood et al.

Vikings vs Christians

42 The End

From your list I did read Lazarus, Monstress, East of west and Saga but while I enjoy all those series I felt like the collected editions for this year specifically were not as noteworthy.

Animosity and Black Hammer I've only read the first chapter and had trouble getting into them. The Fix is in my to-read pile though. Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks =). I like only posting it here because the other comics forums I read are so crowded or unmanaged that it's nearly impossible to get any real discussion going. So I don't mind all the effort it takes to get the images and stuff laid out.

Plus, presumably we are all movie buffs which provides an interesting angle on the responses.

My only Chew exposure is the crossover with Revival. Did you read that?

I meant to ask if you only read the main Archie title or also checked out the other books in that relaunch?

Re: I read a lot of comics this year. These were my favorites. What were yours?

I wish I'd read more new stuff this year. I'm only following four current series--TWD, Invincible, Saga, and Lazarus--and I haven't read any of the last two in months, and I'm partway through the most recent TWD TPB. So this kind of thread is useful in helping me find stuff I might want to read. It also reminded me that I got some Shadow in a recent sale that I haven't read yet.

I don't read new stuff anymore but really nice posts dishpan!

I will have to check out that Star Trek: New Visions series as I love TOS and John Byrne.

I wouldn't have known about it if not for your posts. Thanks!

Yeah, the whisperer war storyline has been pretty good. Looking forward to the end of the story arc.

Comixology has the five Margo Lane issues for 99 cents each or the collection for $11, so I just bought the single issues.

I don't read much in the way of new comics these days, but I picked up the two Paper Girls trades in the Comixology year end Image sale and blew through them in about an hour. I've always been a big fan of Vaughan and this did not disappoint. I liked it so much that I picked up an original art page from Cliff Chiang's art rep this afternoon. Today was the first time any of the art had ever been made available and most pages sold out in about an hour.

Re: I read a lot of comics this year. These were my favorites. What were yours?

This weekend I was able to knock out some of my remaining 2016 stack, and there were two highlights I thought you guys might care about.

The Flash -- Full Stop

If you are a fan of the TV show, I think this was written with you in mind. I've read a lot of Flash comics in my time and I don't recall a plot similar to this one. Basically what if Central City PD declared Flash a rogue, and in order to catch him they deputized The Rogues themselves? Pretty fun. My only complaint is that the back cover spoiled one of the surprises unfortunately (as does the Amazon description and the reviewers, avoid it if you can).

The Fix vol 1

I already loved the Superior Foes Of Spider-Man, so seeing those creators go full R-rated was great. It's an action comedy where cops are criminals and criminals are cops. It's hard to not give it a try at only $8 new.
