I'm always up for a Verhoeven movie! It's been a while, the last thing I saw from him was Black Book which I thought was fantastic but that was 10 years ago!

I think he's the only one that could have turned that into something entertaining, but then it would have been the trash that the book is, not the the trash the author thinks it isn't.

Saw this last night. I've seen almost every Paul Verhoeven movie. Elle stands shoulder to shoulder with his best. I loved it.
Funny anecdote. I saw the film with a packed audience at the Vancouver Film Fest. At one point during the film there is a brutal jump scare scene that caused the loudest screams I've EVER witnessed in a movie theatre. I mean people were shaken up. It was amazing. Anyways, about 5 minutes later the fire alarm goes off and the whole theater is evacuated. We had to wait outside for about 10 minutes and luckily we were let back in. The film starts up again and instead of where it left off it started up exactly 3 seconds before the jump scare, and when it happened everyone cracked up instead. It was bizarre.
Anyhow 4.5/5. Great movie.

I don't think he was ever optioned as much as mentioned as someone perfect for the job. I think the studio was a bit wary of hiring him, because as others have said he would have recognized the material as trash and done it in that style . Granted, it would have probably would have expanded its audience beyond the core as movie geeks would have then taken interest, but alas...

This was a thoroughly entertaining classy trash movie with a solid lead performance. I'm not really sure what to take away from it, but I enjoyed it. Especially seeing as how it isn't a movie I've seen a dozen times in the last 2 years.

the listed date was wrong, my bad. The Blu-ray is currently set for a Feb 21st, 2017, I'd expect streaming to be out in early Feb.

I figured, like many indie titles, there would be a VOD rental option around the same time as the limited theatrical release. I wouldn't mind paying $10 to watch it at home right now, but not a week or two before the Blu-ray releases. Oh well.

Yeah, it depends on the distributor, unfortunately Sony Pictures Classics doesn't really do that.

Yeah, saw that that there was a copy floating around in the ether but it's in French with Dutch subtitles. My French is good enough but I wouldn't be able to handle all of the nuances and such, so I will wait for a better version.

I watched this a few days ago. It's one of those movies that takes awhile to digest. After finishing it, I thought it was a 3 out of 5 star movie, but after thinking about it more, I give it a 4 out of 5.
Great acting by the entire cast and a dark, uncomfortable story.

Saw this with a friend in San Francisco last night.
I came in expecting a certain kind of film and got another. In this case, I was delightfully surprised. The rest of the audience that was in attendance hated it.
Really enjoyed the cast. I thought the time spent with each member of the cast was solid. It could have been pretty easy for the film to lose itself in how many characters bounce in and out at any given time.

I ended up seeing this. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I didn't hate it or anything. I'm just not sure I understand everything that was going on. Huppert was fantastic in it for sure.
Can any of you wise people who saw it provide your analysis?

Paul Verhoeven is back with "Elle", mostly a psychological drama that kicks off with a middle-aged woman, Elle (Isabella Huppert) in the midst of being assaulted (phyisically and sexually) in her own home by a masked man. Then the story peels away the layers of this woman with details from her distant past, and the previous decades of her life. Lots of twisty windings in this tale. Very European in flavor (French-language film).
I give it 3 stars or a grade of B.

I was able to stream some of this movie through "certain means" around the time it opened. The picture quality was piss poor so I obviously wasn't getting the intended experience. Huppert's acting was good but overall I wasn't too impressed with what I saw. My hope is that if this wins Best Actress and Best Foreign film at the Oscars as it did with the Globes it might get us one last American movie from Verhoeven.
