What Are You Reading? (December 2016)

Looks like someone needs to step up and start a new thread I wonder if we are approaching the point of maybe having one giant "what are you reading" thread for the whole year? Not a lot of reading going on here in November

Just finished:

A good entry in the Joe Ledger series. I like when the stories have strong doses of sci-fi/horror. And the previous book, Predator One, while good was a little too much like a typical thriller that could've written by any number of authors.

If anything, this book is almost overstuffed with things. We get Lovecraftian monsters, dimensional travel, mind control, body swapping, EMP weapons, another doomsday plague ... with a little zombie action and ray-gun shooting Men in Black thrown in for good measure. Though I had low expectations since the descriptions made it sound like a very general action-thriller with ISIL using EMP weapons for terrorist attacks.

I'm almost finished Dave Mustaine's autobiography. Found the Kindle version for only $1.99, pretty interesting read.

Shadowrun: Spells and Chrome...a bunch of newish short stories about Shadowrun/Sixth World. Two stories in and it's decent. I'm hoping it picks up though.

Before that, I finished Fable: Edge of the World by Christie Golden over Thanksgiving. I've read Christie's Warcraft books and they were far better than this. It's average at best but a quick read.

Re: What Are You Reading? (December 2016)

I'm reading this:

I usually don't read much fantasy, but went to a panel at Emerald City Comicon to see Seanan McGuire/Mira Grant, he was on it, and he was pretty odd and funny (as was she) so decided to check out some of his books, the first one was good enough I moved on to the next.

Same panel had Brent Weeks, and so I read some of his Lightbringer books too--those I am kind of addicted too.

I enjoyed it, though it is rather derivative (once you get past the shock factor of it being Harry Potter/Narnia with sex and drugs). And I wish the lead character wasn't so much of an insufferable mope.

Are the other two books in the series worth it? The first one ended in a reasonable manner (if it was only a stand-alone book). I notice on Goodreads the reader ratings go up as the series moves along. But that may be more to people that didn't like the first book not reading any more in the series, than actual improvement in the novels.

Finished Prince Lestat, starting Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis.

It feels a bit surreal. I thought the days of quality vampire books from Rice were long gone. But I really liked PL.

Re: What Are You Reading? (December 2016)

Finished Dark Tower VI, The Song of Susannah by Stephen King.
Started Dracula by Bram Stoker. It's a lot better than the last time I read it, back when I was 13.
Started Atomic Accidents by James Mahaffey. It was an early Christmas gift.

I'm not sure how much I liked it. It was really odd, though.

Just about to start:
