What Are You Reading? (October 2016)

Finished:

Yeah, quality-wise this wasn't that different from The Passage. I'll move onto the last book in the trilogy. Without digging into all the negative reviews, I have a guess the two things people didn't like were:
Spoiler:
How the first 200+ pages jumped back to Year Zero, before picking up the story of the main characters from the first book (even though some of the characters in flashback had major roles in the future-set story). And it probably felt like The Twelve big bad virals were killed off just a little too neatly at the end (though Zero is still out there as the series' main "big bad"). EDIT: And looking at some negative reviews, one that I should have seen coming: female readers upset at the violence and degradation inflicted on most of the book's female characters.

I liked it better upon reread years later

Re: What Are You Reading? (October 2016)

Currently reading the second volume of Mark Altman's exhaustive oral history of "Star Trek". The second and final volume focuses on all that followed the original series and movies. It's interesting to read how chaotic "Next Gen" was behind the scenes creatively, and further illustrates how frustrating Gene Rodenberry could be. I watched "Next Gen" for its entire run, good and bad, though I don't feel any desire to re-watch any episodes. I watched a good bit of "Deep Space Nine", not a single episode of "Voyager", and only the pilot of "Enterprise".

Overall, it's a good warts-and-all portrait of the franchise, told from the perspective of those who worked on it.

Re: What Are You Reading? (October 2016)

I decided to read the Wheel of Time, a 14 volume epic fantasy series. I had read the first 9 or 10 back in the day, then got tired of waiting for the next volume to come out. So I decided to go back to it once it was complete. It's been complete for a few years now but I'm just getting around to it. Currently on book 4. It's been long enough that I've forgotten a lot of the details (and a few of the bigger plot points!)

Re: What Are You Reading? (October 2016)

I'm on the sixth book of the Last Apprentice series (a.k.a. The Wardstone Chronicles), Clash of the Demons. This is such a fun YA horror series, and it's disappointing that the attempt at a film adaptation, Seventh Son, was so bad. It wasn't much of an adaptation, to be honest. The movie borrowed the names and some of the broad strokes from the books, but it was much more of a generic fantasy than the written version.

Anyway, I wish these books had existed when I was in late elementary school or junior high. I would have devoured them multiple times!

Ringworld - Larry Niven

Pierson's puppeteers, three-leg two-head aliens find immense structure in unexplored part of the universe. Frightened of meeting the builders, they send a team of two humans, a puppeteer and a kzin, eight-foot red-fur catlike alien. Ringworld is 180 million miles across, sun at center. But the expedition crashes, and crew face disastrously long trek.

how much horror is there? Would it be ok for a 11 year old to read?

I started reading The Expanse series after watching the show. Book 1 and 2 were awesome but I'm struggling with 3. I'm particularly interested in the new characters introduced.

books 3 and, i think, 4 are difficult when starting since they throw in new characters but then they get better. I dont want to say anymore to spoil anything.
I enjoyed all the books (5?) and hope a new one comes out soon

I was already reading Stephen King by the time I was 11, so I might not be the best judge. That said, it's certainly way less intense than anything King wrote, so I don't think an 11-year-old should have any problems.

They're good enough that I'd recommend reading the first book, Revenge of the Witch, so you can see if you feel they're appropriate.

Re: What Are You Reading? (October 2016)

just finished "Mostly Harmless" the 5th book in Douglas Adams Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series. This series wasnt as good as i remember it being when i read it (at least the first 4 books) about 30 years ago. The first 2 books are pretty strong but its kind of mess after that.

I think i'll start Contact by Carl Sagan today
