Knight Rider, Miami Vice Complete Series Blu-rays -- 10/4/16

Noticed on Blu-ray.com that both Knight Rider and Miami Vice Complete Series are coming on Blu-ray on October 4th.

https://www.amazon.com/Miami-Vice-Co.../dp/B01HSAIOWU
https://www.amazon.com/Knight-Rider-.../dp/B01HSAIOZW

Sorry, can a mod move this to the Blu-ray sub-forum?

Re: Knight Rider, Miami Vice Complete Series Blu-rays -- 10/4/16

I wonder if they will release Miami Vice in it's OAR (1:33:1?) or try to make this widescreen. I assume they shot it on film, so it's feasible, but since it's Millcreek releasing it, I doubt they would do that.

I heard all the original music in Miami Vice will be retained, so that's good news. I never bought it on DVD, so I'll consider it depending on price.

As for Knight Rider, I already own the 4 seasons on DVD and not sure if I would want to invest in a double dip.

It's almost certainly going to be released in widescreen from the HD syndication masters.

Good god, I hope not. If that is the case, I will just keep my DVD set.

I know. For some reason I thought I was in that subforum. I sent a PM to a mod to have it moved.

It was shot on film, but I haven't read anything about it being remastered. This is one of my favorite shows, so I have been searching for quite a while for it regarding any cleanup. Nothing yet, and I'm not sure MC would do that. I don't think they've done any real remastering in any TV show. $99.99 is that price right now, but I can see it dropping to $50 in short time. It is Mill Creek.

I have never seen this in widescreen in syndication. Where has it been playing like that?

I've got the few episodes or seasons I want from both Knight Rider and Miami Vice on DVD. A little of Knight Rider goes a long way. Those key two part KR episodes are more than enough Hoff. And for me, only the first two seasons of MV are worthy.

Crockett didn't even have the Testarossa until season 3. That's when the shit got real.

I don't think a 16:9 print exists for the series. It's currently on Hulu in 4:3

I believe it aired in syndication on USA for some time and I think it aired in SD 4:3 there as well.

and it's currently airing in syndication on some network called COZI TV. But, I haven't seen it airing there since that network is OTA and not on Directv.

Re: Knight Rider, Miami Vice Complete Series Blu-rays -- 10/4/16

If Hulu has it in 4:3, that is likely the same master that will be used for Blu-ray. Miami Vice just seems like a show that could use a widescreen remastering, but I guess its owners don't want to pony up the expense.

Being 80s tv, wouldn't these have been edited on video? Did they go back to the original film elements and re-edit the episodes like ST:TNG?

(Not to be the skunk in the room).

If Miami Vice, Knight Rider, Airwolf, etc ... were released on bluray back in 2010 or 2011, I probably would have been really excited.

Fast forward to 2016, I simply don't give a damn anymore.

But with all that being said, nowadays I would only pick up such complete series bluray sets when they show up in local dump bins for less than $20 a pop, and if I was really bored out of my skull.

That wasn't too much of a thing until the late '80s, and Universal held out longer than most.

I'm reading an article from 1987 about this now, and one of the reasons Universal cites for finishing TV series on film is the advent of high definition video. They were early, but they weren't wrong!

I'd probably get the Miami Vice set if I didn't already own the season box sets on DVD. Don't plan to double dip.

Re: Knight Rider, Miami Vice Complete Series Blu-rays -- 10/4/16

I'm thinking Miami Vice will be sold for around $50-60 when it's released.

The only thing that makes me somewhat hesitant to pick it up (or ask for it for my birthday, which is the day after it's released) is that I probably won't watch it right away.

I have such a huge backlog of DVDs and BDs and shows to watch. Plus, that's right in the middle of the Fall TV season. I would feel bad spending that kind of money and just throwing it on the shelf or in the closet sealed and unwatched. I want to get out of the habit of doing that.

Wow, that's a neat article.

For some reason I have this memory of reading about Deep Space Nine and Voyager being finished on film for the "upcoming high def" formats, but I was apparently hallucinating as they were both done on tape like TNG.

I can't stand how poorly Paramount treats the crown jewel of their company.

Interesting.

I own very little 80s television programming outside of ST:TNG and New Twilight Zone. TZ definitely has the look of being edited on video tape, and lots of the stuff from that era I watch on cable has that same sort of soft look to it.

(Oh, yeah, I also have Shout's Max Headroom.)

Re: Knight Rider, Miami Vice Complete Series Blu-rays -- 10/4/16

The frustrating thing about the timing of these releases is that if they had come out in 2010/11 as Morriscroy mentioned, then I would have probably had time to watch them. Now they would most likely sit on the shelf...and like a lot of folks on this forum, I am definitely trying to get away from spending good money for something that never leaves the shrinkwrap.

Go back 6 or 7 years and there was not a ton of Netflix originals to watch, in addition to the ton of shows/movies they now have available (despite the constant complaints that there is still nothing to watch on Netflix if you go the streaming only route), heck...when the Miami Vice DVD set hit I was really excited to pick it up (it was a black Friday on-line Best Buy purchase I was really psyched to get) and binge watched that sucker well before bingeing became a thing (seriously, I think I plowed through 2-3 seasons worth of shows over the course of two weeks, and to me back then and even now I consider that a lot of tv watching in a short period of time).

I could give a rats ass about the timing. This is one of my favorite shows, I'm just happy it's hitting blu. I'll make time to watch these.

Yeah, it can be pretty unmistakable. With shows like Sledge Hammer! and The Hitchhiker, you don't even have to wonder.

Re: Knight Rider, Miami Vice Complete Series Blu-rays -- 10/4/16

Fair enough Trespoochies, I just think Morriscroy makes a good point. I remember watching Knight Rider, but for some reason I missed most, if not all of the event/two part episodes (Kitt dropped in acid, the semi with the missile launcher that was a formidable foe for Kitt, and there was even an evil version of Kitt called Goliath right?)...so if the price is right I might pick up the Knight Rider set just to finally watch the handful of episodes I missed (and I also remember that I really enjoyed the pilot episode...in fact, to this day I feel that Knight Rider had a better than average pilot episode for a drama).

I just googled...the evil version was called Karr and the semi was called Goliath, and I definitely want to catch up on those eps and it should be a treat in true hi def.

Yeah, I know my sentiment is in the minority. And also, I'm just in it for Miami Vice. I may get Knight Rider at some point, but not in a hurry for that one.
