I love the covers for the Fear Street series. It always caught my attention, but I was never allowed to read them as a kid. Reprints of the series have awful bland new covers and fonts that don't do them justice at all. So I do my best finding original copies at used book stores when I see them.

Here's a good side by side of the original vs reprints. The originals get your imagination running and draw you in with great teaser taglines and eye catching artwork, and the font used just has an eerie look to it, that it's perfect. The reprints on the other hand look so generic and nothing that makes you wonder what the stories contain and so forth. It's just "meh, another skull image,a dead rose, nothing of interest here, no real personality."

You guys are making me nervous about the third book, but I'm going to read it next nonetheless. I don't know anything about the tv show except that many seem to not be liking season 2 compared to season 1. And if it's following the books, it's easy to see why:
Spoiler:
I liked the 2nd book alright, but that's a huge tonal shift from the mystery of the town to a futuristic thriller. One thing that's bugging me ... why on Earth would Pilcher give Ethan such control as sheriff after he was such a pain in the ass after waking up in town? Pilcher's supposed to be a genius at planning, but even I could see that was a bad idea (if he didn't want his control of Wayward Pines to fall apart).

Fast reading, but I think I enjoyed each book in the series less than the previous one.
Spoiler:
Ending a trilogy on a cliffhanger is weak sauce Didn't like how Pilcher and Pam just became generic evil-doing villains. And how did Kate not notice her boss living in the town all that time?

So I guess I've spoiled myself for the movie but that's ok. I like reading the book first. I quite liked this. Sometimes I wonder why I don't break out and read more non horror/sci-fi/fantasy books since I'm sure there are so many great books that I'm just skipping by.

A good movie can be made from this, though I can see it easily becoming a generic mystery if not handled properly. Director Tate Taylor doesn't have any track record for this kind of story, so I guess we'll see. I love how they cast the frumpy overweight main character with Emily Blunt. What a real fatty she is, right?

TC Boyle - Stories II - Taking forever

van Name - Slanted Jack - Fun sci fi romp; current "into it" series. Can't go wrong with sarcastic mercenary-owned space assault vehicles

misc - Zombie Raccoons and Killer Rabbits - like most anthologies, hit or miss, but generally good.

Riggs - Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - just started

someone - The Chronothon - free kindle 'book 1' giveaway. Good idea, a little slow, hoping it picks up.
