The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Science Fiction Comic Book Challenge - July 2016
What's a Comic Book Challenge?
- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion
- a way to figure out "what do I read next?"
- motivation to try different genres
- motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles
- a place to get recommendations
How does it work?
- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month
- we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month
- you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read
- in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter
What makes it a "challenge"?
- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed
- the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine)
Who can participate?
- anyone and everyone!
- you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that?
- quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not
When does it start and end?
- it begins at dusk on the last day of previous month, and ends at dawn on the first day of the next month
- this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content
- content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of both Challenges
How does counting work?
- as with every other 'rule', we're pretty liberal and you can count any way you want really
- in general, a comic book counts as one
- for graphic novels and oversize books, feel free to count one for every twenty pages
Who wins?
- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day
What is the schedule?
January - TV/Movie/Book
February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc Winners
March - Rotating Company
April - TBD (random idea every year)
May - Make-Your-Own
June - Reality
July - Science Fiction
August - Fantasy
September - Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone
October - Horror
November - Comedy
December - Holiday (w/ bonus Thanksgiving and New Year's time)

I need to see what I have available for this month. I'm sure a lot.
If you need reading ideas, the Star Trek Humble Bundle provides a lot of options.

[another Trevor rant]So my decision to check out Rebirth #1 has created a completionism monster. Or awakened it is more apt I guess. I loved the book, and my lifelong love of DC is rekindled.
I never lost the love, didn't hate most of the new 52 for example, but I've sort of kept it on the back burner for the past 20 years. I haven't kept up with comics on a month to month basis for twenty years now, and especially kept continuity books and the big events in the "to read" pile since then.
I still read a lot of books; but mainly independent books without decades of continuity, big two short runs not heavy in continuity, and older stuff. It's always been my plan to someday go thru both big two companies in chronological order reading all the big events and tie-in issues, and 'catching up' on all I missed.
Well, Rebirth inspired me to stop putting it off and at least do a modified total history read. At first I was just going to read all of Flashpoint, and that combined with my bare knowledge of the past stuff and the new 52 was going to be enough to let me dive into the entire Rebirth line. But Flashpoint was so enjoyable that I decided to go even further back and read all the DC events of the 80s and 90s.
As always, I'll probably tire of this before I even get to Infinite Crisis, but hey, it's been fun so far. [yet another Trevor rant off]

Re: The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Science Fiction Comic Book Challenge - July 2016
Pretty excited to finally dig deeply into the Fourth World Omniboo I bought several years back. I really know the New Gods by reputation only (partly by LOSH Great Darkness saga, and Mister Miracle's appearances in the Brave and the Bold), so I'm looking forward to finding out more. The first volume was pretty nutty, with Kirby creating entire worlds from scratch (though I know some of it was unused ideas he brought over from Marvel). (Don Rickles--really?) Also, I'm not sure how he can be credited as "editor" in addition to writer and artist. I take that to mean it was unedited.
Also, I know some have criticized the paper in these volumes, but they read fine to me (feels like comic book paper), and it makes a great weight for travel--pretty much as light as--or even lighter than--a TPB. I only brought a couple with me on vacation and may regret not having more. (I have #s 3 and 4 in TPB.)

I mostly learned about the New Gods through Jim Starlin's work and when they would spill over onto Earth. I'm not sure I've read more than a few of Kirby's original issues.
