The Official 8th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
8th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge
7th Annual (2014) here.
6th Annual (2013) here.
5th Annual (2012) here.
4th Annual (2011) Here.
3rd Annual (2010) Here.
2nd Annual (2009) Here. List here.
1st Annual (2008) here. (last page for checklist)
Thanks to shadokitty for getting the thread started this year! I needed to be able to adjust some of the categories/options for the checklist and update for prizes, so restarted it here. So, onto the challenge!
Dates: Dusk June 30-Dawn August 1st
Rules
Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.
If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.
Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews. Documentaries include UFO and alien abduction type shows.
As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.
Use any counting method you prefer, as prize determination does not depend on number of items watched.
3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.
Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.
Watching multiple versions (theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.
How to win a prize
There's 1 way to get an entry:
Participate by watching at least 1 item
Audio:
Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio
I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.
If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.
1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.
1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.
3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.
1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.

Maybe I can now watch all those box sets of Power Rangers and Zyurangers that I picked up over the past year.

Playing marathon sessions of DCUO got me interested in watching comic movies and shows myself.
I'm thinking of starting some Power Rangers too, as all the series that I know of are on Amazon Prime.

Along with all the films I've picked up I hope to finally finish Enterprise by watching S4. I also discovered I somehow *skipped* S6 of Deep Space Nine during the TV Challenge!?!? Still haven't figured that one out... but it *did* seem like I'd missed stuff along the way... As always I've too much content and too little time!

Sci-fi/Fantasy is one of my favorite challenges! Looking forward to next month myself. I never really got into Smallville. I watched a season or two, but while I liked Lex Luthor, just never really got hooked on the show.
I have to admit, I'm not a huge Power Ranger fan. Back when it first aired in the US, I watched a fair amount of it-but mainly because the kids I sat for were into it. I think I was just a bit too old to want to watch it at that point and then never got into it. My nephew, however, loves it. It's definitely a show that has lasted and held up for kids at least!
I have been tempted to focus on comic movies/shows. I've been saving most of Agents of SHIELD for a marathon watch one of these days, so it'd be a good time to get it off the DVR...
As someone who enjoys Trek, I have to admit that while I own Enterprise, I've never watched it. I keep on meaning to start watching it, but haven't yet. Maybe this July is the time! But I definitely agree with you-I have too much content and too little time!

I was more excited when they announced Masked Rider was coming to FOX. I had played the Sega CD, which was basically Dragons Lair except it was for the original first episode of the Japanese series, which is what FOX was using to promote it before it aired. Then when it aired, we got a dumbed down American version with a furry sidekick, if I remember correctly.

It's been some time since I've seen S1-S3 of Enterprise but I do recall enjoying the series. I liked S3 a bit better than S1 & S2 but I don't think any of them are as bad as reviews (and hard core TNG fans) might lead you to believe.

Would it be possible to get credit for reading sci-fi or fantasy movie scripts? I'm kinda interested in reading some unused Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection to see how good the films could have been.

BobO'Link: I'll have to see what I'm feeling like watching, but Enterprise will be high up on the list!

With all the talk of Jurassic World, plan to revisit the original trilogy some time during the challenge.

I was thinking this myself. I think at the very least the first and third movies are on my list. Not a fan of two, though. I may also wait to see Jurassic World then too. I'm eager to see it, but since July is so close already, I may wait for it.

I was just coming to tell about Christopher Lee. Very sad! I think I will be adding him to our checklist for this year...

I was going to suggest that we put him on the list! He will definitely be missed. Iconic actor.

If he died 4 days ago, why was it just on the news today?

I know Lord of the Rings for Saruman, and Star Wars II and III for Count Dooku, but is there anything else he did, other than the Necessary Evil documentary on DC Super Villains he narrated that would be eligible? I don't count him playing Dracula, as that is more horror in my mind.
First Betsy Palmer, now Christopher Lee. They say deaths come in threes. I wonder who will be next.
