The film will hit theaters in June 2017
John Lasseter will direct a fourth Toy Story film, Walt Disney Company chairman Bob Iger announced during an earnings call Thursday.
The toys-come-to-life family film will hit theaters June 2017.
Lasseter directed the first Toy Story in 1995, and returned to direct the second. He also directed A Bug's Life, and currently holds the title of chief creative officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. I'm one of the few that didn't like part 3 that much; curious where they would go with this because as OldBoy said, 3 ended perfectly.

I think the second one is the weak link though that's splitting hairs because they're all great. The trilogy format is overrated and rarely necessary or even appropriate and if they can deliver a 4th film that's as good as the first three I say bring it.

^ Agreed. It's easy to say a previous film that ended well needs no more sequels, but if the story is great it really doesn't matter how many they make.

I don't recall the series covering the whole mass produced toy lines. Obviously there are more Buzz and Woody toys out there in the world. I'd like to see 4 do something with that idea.

If this means we get the large sparks, twitch, chunk figures, I'm all over it.

UPDATE: We’ve also learned some new info including who helped break the story, and the fact Rashida Jones and Will McCormack are writing the script.

Toy Story 3 was a perfect capper and a 4th one isn't warranted. Give me The Incredibles 2 instead.

EDIT: I think i'm mis-remembering part 3, as I forgot Spanish Buzz wasn't different. But Buzz sees the toy shelves lined with other versions of himself in part 2, right?

I dunno. Aside from the little shorts we get w/ them, TS3 was pretty perfect in endin their narrative.

The first one holds a slightly nostalgic place in my heart but the other two, while excellent movies, have never captured that feeling again. I've got no problem with them doing a fourth Toy Story as long as the story is decent.
I remember reading where Tom Hanks was hesitant to make Toy Story sequels for the sake of it but has kept coming back to the series because he felt the scripts for parts 2 and 3 were good. Hopefully he still thinks the same way and will only sign on if the script was great for part 4.

I wonder if Pixar has the balls to do part 4 with a whole new set of toys and let part 3 be the final send off of Andy's toys.

Everything except The Incredibles 2. I know it's in development, but it should've been done by now.

To me the first three are so good they've earned the benefit of the doubt on the fourth one. Still, it feels like a bad idea.
Having Lasseter's last movie be a fully executed bad idea doesn't help.

It's always funny to me how The Incredibles still doesn't have a sequel seeing as how it's the one movie that really sets itself up for more with the superhero aspect.
This. I love the Toy Story Trilogy and feel they've earned some good will as far as that franchise is concerned. Not to mention all of the subsequent shorts have been great as well so that makes me cautiously optimistic.

On the flip side, there have also been terrible fourth entries that have killed franchises or hindered box office success for entries that came afterwards. For example, I feel the poor word of mouth for The Final Destination definitely hindered the box office performance of Final Destination 5 which happened to be the best reviewed entry in that particular franchise.
If the story is there, tell it.
... and let's be honest, Lasseter is probably doing this as a favor so Iger doesn't murder Andrew Stanton with his bare hands.
