A big Arrow Video flash sale for the weekend

http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/shop/ind...tegory&path=89

SALE RUNS UNTIL MIDNIGHT SUNDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER (UK TIME)

The UK's finest niche Blu-ray distributor is running one of their occasional sales. Most are region locked, though Panasonic players can bypass those locks for the most part with a well-known trick.

There are too many BDs on sale to list. Yes, they ship to North America.

Re: A big Arrow Video flash sale for the weekend

Thanks for the tip! Nothing here I want (though some very good prices). One of these days I need to buy a region locked non USA blu to test the hardware hack on my Oppo. I know it works with dvd, but all my import blu's are region free.

Re: A big Arrow Video flash sale for the weekend

There are a handful of region-free Arrow BDs available. American studios got upset at Arrow for releasing unlocked BDs that were better than domestic editions, hence Arrow was forced to lock everything. These should be region-free:

Bay of Blood
City of the Living Dead
Frankenhooker
Inferno
Obsession
Phenomena
Red Scorpion
The Cat O’Nine Tails
The Exterminator
The House by the Cemetery
Vamp

The newer titles tend not to show up in sales for a few months.

Also, if you spend £50 or more, you get free shipping to the States and Arrow packs VERY good.

Sale good through tonight @7PM EST

Re: A big Arrow Video flash sale for the weekend

Thanks OP, wouldn't have caught this.

Ordered:

Obsession
The Lickerish Quartet
Phenomena
The Cat O'Nine Tails
Pit Stop
Spirits of the Dead
The Beyond [Steelbook]
The House By the Cemetery

According to the Arrow website & reviews (mostly Bluray.com, DVDBeaver to supplement or if no Bluray.com review available) the above are all region free, uncut & seem to be the best or equal to the best release.

All were £7.99 except The Beyond [Steelbook], which was £9.99.

Very timely for The 10th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge."

Re: A big Arrow Video flash sale for the weekend

Placed a small order and picked up Obsession and Phenomena. I have no clue when/if Obsession will be released in the US so this is as good as it gets price wise.

Dang, they mean business when the time is up for their sale. Almost bought a large batch, but I'm gonna wait till the next sale. Thanks for the heads up. I have three of their titles from the last sale and they do a great job.

Yeah, I noticed if you add titles to your cart, they'll disappear within an hour or so and you'll have to re-add them.

Thanks, do you see any new titles added to the list ? I am seeing the standard list of titles that always feature in Arrow sales.

Re: A big Arrow Video flash sale for the weekend

Quite a few discs are new to this sale, including some fairly recent releases and more Arrow Academy editions. At best, some of these may have been included in the most recent winter sale, but considering how many of them I would've bought if they were, I'm a little skeptical. Some may also have been priced at £9.99 because they were newer at the time. Several of these are region free (or A+B), where noted, meaning they're economical alternatives to Arrow's U.S. counterparts:

ASHES & DIAMONDS (All Region)
AUDITION
BICYCLE THIEVES (Region B, but lengthy bonus features)
BLOOD RAGE (3 disc, Region Free)
CALIGULA
CEMETERY WITHOUT CROSSES (Region A+B)
CLOSELY OBSERVED TRAINS (Region Free)
DEADLY BLESSING
DJANGO PREPARE A COFFIN
EATEN ALIVE (Region A+B, may have been in the last sale, too)
FIVE DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON
L'ASSASINO
MILANO CALIBRO 9 (Region Free)
MIRACLE IN MILAN
NEKROMANTIK
NIKKATSU DIAMOND GUYS VOL. 1 (Region Free; technically cheaper in Amazon UK's 2/£25 sale)
KOYANISQATSI
POWAQQATSI
RABID DOGS / KIDNAPPED
REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS (DVD only)
REQUIESCANT (Region A+B)
ROLLERBALL
SALVATORE GIULIANO
SHEBA BABY (Region A+B)
SOCIETY (Region Free)
SQUIRM
SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS (Region B, but some supplements unique and not on Criterion)
SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS (ditto)
TENDERNESS OF THE WOLVES (Region A+B)
THE CONFORMIST
THE FIREMAN'S BALL
THE HONEYMOON KILLERS
THE KILLERS (1946)
THE LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN (Region B, but has special features not on the barebones U.S. edition)
THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE
THE MUTILATOR (Region Free)
THE NAKED CITY (probably in previous sale)
THE TIN DRUM
WAKE UP AND KILL (Region A+B)
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE (Region A+B)

BRANDED TO KILL
RETALIATION (Region Free)
MASSACRE GUN (Region Free)

WALERIAN BOROWCZYK SHORT FILMS AND ANIMATION
BLANCHE
GOTO, ISLE OF LOVE
THE BEAST

Also, £4.99 is a pretty fair price for the all-region, features-laden FRANKENHOOKER as well as SPIRITS OF THE DEAD.

Will Region A + B (like "Tenderness of the Wolves") play on a standard American blu-ray? Thanks for the clarification.

Those are the best values 7.99 pound vs US MSRP of $39.99 (and yeah I know that no one here pays full MSRP). Although I'd add that a bunch of the older titles can be had for cheaper when Amazon.co.uk offer a 2 for 10 sale or 3 for 20 sale.

Yes. Most if not all of those are identical to the U.S. editions now that Arrow is licensing many titles for both territories. The only difference is the U.K. rating stickers, I'd imagine, but for the price, I'll live with those.

One drawback to the Amazon sales is that they don't have a very broad a selection of Arrow titles on offer. And as noted elsewhere on these forums yesterday, most of the Arrow titles have been pulled from the Amazon sales, presumably in anticipation of this sale.

As for UK vs. US pricing on the Region A+B or Region Free discs, considering £7.99 converts to about $10.65 US, even Amazon's US retail prices can't compare.

For example, here's Amazon's US pricing on several of the newer Region A+B titles, which are the ones officially released by Arrow in both countries:

BLOOD RAGE: $26.39
CEMETERY WITHOUT CROSSES: $25.29
REQUIESCANT: $39.99 ($18.80 and up from Marketplace sellers)
EATEN ALIVE: $39.99 ($29.61 and up from Marketplace sellers)
SHEBA BABY: $19.79
TENDERNESS OF THE WOLVES: $36.39 ($21.91 and up on Marketplace)
WAKE UP AND KILL: $17.75 ($13.10+ on Marketplace)
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE: $28.88
Also:
SOCIETY (Region Free): $27.01
THE MUTILATOR (Region Free): $26.20
RETALIATION (Region Free): $25.18
MASSACRE GUN (Region Free): $25.29

Definitely some savings there.

Keep in mind that all the titles listed above and in the previous post are JUST the ones I'm fairly certain weren't available in the previous Arrow sales. There are a few other Region Free discs among the remainder.

Reviews for many of these Arrow Video releases. I'd recommend Society and What Have You Done To Solange? as blind buys.

Re: A big Arrow Video flash sale for the weekend

Thanks, Brian T for that excellent summary. I see that one great title seems to have been left out in your list - 'Day of Anger' *ing Lee Van Cleef, which is Region A+B and costs $25.xx stateside on Amazon.

Put in 10 titles into my wishlist but somehow can't seem to pull the trigger on them yet as I know the pound will drop more, perhaps even to parity with the USD. Expecting another Arrow sale towards the end of the year and by history, am confident that most of these titles should still be available (the only risk being a price increase)

Definitely a good one. The only reason I left it off was because it was available in the last couple of sales. That said, there are definitely a few other region-free discs to be had from those on offer, for those who aren't region-free just yet.

Also worth keeping in mind is Arrow's most recent Black Friday sale, in which they offered bundles of related titles for lowest ever prices. For example, all seven of their Vincent Price/Poe/Corman movies were only £40, or £5.71 apiece, shipped. There were around six or seven bundles in total, but off the top of my head I only recall the Price collection, a Mario Bava collection and a Radley Metzger batch. So basically, it could be wise to avoid directors or stars who have multiple titles available in Arrow's catalog. And possibly genres! Then again, who knows if they'll do that sale again, or what the exchange rate will be when that time comes.

For the time being, though, there's still plenty of good stuff to load up on, and at least they've added new(er) titles this time around.

Everyone should have "The Train" in their collection. Burt Lancaster kicks all sorts of buttocks in that one.

fantastic PQ and riveting narrative. Panasonic BD Player 'top menu' hack handles the Region B coding in the US (if you have a Panasonic BD player and are not region free)
