I enjoyed it. How do you bluff a telepath?

Started The Red Thumbprint by R. Austin Freeman. Dr Thorndyke was the first fictional forensic detective.

I'm reading The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith on audio CD for book club. Never heard of him but I really like the book so far.

Some of Donald Westlake's Parker books. Not quite sure why novels about repugnant people are so appealing, but the lean prose is kind of perversely fun.

I'm reading Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. It's very wordy, and very good.

According to literary critic extraordinaire Harold Bloom, it's "The greatest novel by a living American. A masterpiece, you'd have to go back to Moby Dick to find an American epic that truly compares. The worthy disciple of both Melville and Faulkner."

...and rightfully so. The series gets better and better as it goes along. Wish I could read them all again for the first time. Enjoy!

Re: What Are You Reading ?(August 2014)

Finished the Red Thumb Mark by Freeman, and liked it enough to start The Eye of Osiris by the same author.

I think Dr Thorndyke is the grandfather of both Perry Mason and CSI. Not only did Freeman go into the whole logic and science of forensics (as of 1907), but the entire last third of the book is the courtroom scene. As a reader, the identity of the bad guy was pretty obvious from the second chapter, but Dr Thorndyke's job is to create a case that will convince a jury. I understand that later books dispensed with the mystery completely, and showed the crime being committed in the first chapter. Yes, he's also the grandfather of Columbo.

Re: What Are You Reading ?(August 2014)

Finished (at last!):

Now I can hang out in the spoiler threads with all the cool people

Much better than "Feast For Crows". Though I still think that the two novels would've been better off combined and properly edited. And checking on the status of the next book ... damn, that's why I stopped reading after book three in the first place (and won't start reading any epic series until the entire thing is finished)

Re: What Are You Reading ?(August 2014)

Just started Soul of a Highlander by Melissa Mayhue last night. I needed a lighter read after my last two books.
