It is almost too obvious. And this show has loved misdirection. But still, I think it's probably the only payoff that makes sense. It's not like we haven't all thought that she must be dead by 2030 well before the final season.

I also agree it's too obvious. This was the show that "clearly" set up Robin as the mother in the pilot and then said it wasn't her. And I'm sure there are still people trying to fanwank that into somehow Robin and Ted ending up together.

Well, with what I'm sure will be Barney ruining that marriage and being a widow, perhaps this is all a set up so that Ted is explaining to his kids why marrying the newly divorced Aunt Robin is a-okay...
