Re: The 86th Academy Awards — 2014 Nominations Discussion Thread

Like most years, I don't anticipate many surprises. I expect we'll get anywhere from 7-9 BP nominees. Wolf of Wall Street and Captain Phillips are my 2 favorites so I'm hoping for as many noms as possible, including a much deserved Actor nom for Leo.

With their not being a clear front runner yet, we may see another spread the wealth year, similar to what we saw at the Globes last week.

Since "Brooklyn 99" surprised everybody at the Golden Globes, perhaps "That's My Boy" will surprise everybody at the Oscars.

I would be surprised if "12 Years a Slave" doesn't have the most nominations and isn't the front runner in all its categories.

Good movie (believe I ranked it 7th or 8th on my top 10 of 2013), but it would be so boring and predictable if it wins everything.

Until Julia Roberts has her Oscar taken away live during an Academy Awards ceremony I won't be watching.

I think Gravity will have more noms but 12 Years will have the more "important" nominations.

Best Actor is going to be snubrific.

I agree, Gravity will have the most nominations, because it will also get a ton of technical noms on top of the big categories.

Re: The 86th Academy Awards — 2014 Nominations Discussion Thread

I think they could tie. There are only really 3 truly technical awards: Visual Effects and the two Sound awards. While 12YAS won't get those, it will likely get 3 acting nominations, whereas Gravity will probably only get one. 12YAS could tie by getting a nom for Costume Design, unless Gravity's space suits were considered impressive enough for it to be nominated.

That's assuming all else is equal. Does 12YAS a nod for Makeup due to, well, you know?

Re: The 86th Academy Awards — 2014 Nominations Discussion Thread

12 Years a Slave is probably the easy frontrunner for Adapted Screenplay, but that's the only safe choice. It'll have tough competition in Actor and Supporting Actress. McConaughey seems to have the momentum right now and Lawrence got a boost from the Globes. I think Cuaron will take Director, and Gravity might win nearly all the Tech awards.

12 Years could be like Argo last year in that it could be a BP winner with few victories. Picture, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay?

Gravity could also win Director and Editing and still lose Picture. That doesn't happen often. I think it's between Gravity and 12 Years with American Hustle lurking, although I hope the latter doesn't win.

i would love to see much love for The Wolf of Wall Street. the more i think about it the more i really enjoyed it. though, i loved Gravity too, but for very different reasons.

Leo is a lock imo. Hope Marty and movie get nods too. would be surprised in Hill gets another, but it could happen!

Here's hoping for a clean sweep for Spring Breakers.

There's a good chance Scorsese won't be nominated for Best Director. Unbelievable I know, but I think he's a dark horse at best.

The fact that he's got DGA and BAFTA nominations tells me he's probably secured the 5th spot over Payne, Jonze and others. I think that certainly helps his chances at getting an Oscar nod. Cuaron, Greengrass, Russell, and McQueen seem to be safe. At this stage, I'd be stunned if Scorsese didn't get in.

Why is he a dark horse if he has 2 of the biggest directing nominations so far?

It would be interesting if Will Forte got a surprise Nom for Nebraska. If Jonah Hill gets nominated again I'll be like WTF.
