Re: Robocop (remastered) - 21/1/14

Interesting. I'm guessing this will be a Canadian only release if its one of the "Mastered in 4K" titles since Fox has the rights here through their distribution deal with MGM.

It certainly can use a new transfer as the Fox release is supbar and the recalled Sony disc was better but not by much.

Edit: It says MGM as the studio in the details... interesting.

Nice I never bothered with the original Blu-ray as I heard it wasn't that great of a release. Hopefully this release is better and maybe we can get some extra features too.

I've got the trilogy set, but I'd buy this in a heartbeat if they cleaned it up and beefed up the audio.

Assuming they fix the speed-up and audio drops and keep it Unrated I will get it.

Any chance this will be in 1.66:1? I'm still clinging to my Criterion DVD.

Awesome. Even if it doesn't come to the US, it's the same region. It's way too far away, unfortunately, it'll be months, but cool all the same. Now can we get a better release of Predator?

There's still hope the 3D release in December will include a remastered version.

No, there isn't you haven't been following another forum I guess... The only re-master is the creation of 3D from the UHE master, which was screwed by DNR.

I don't have to time to "follow other forums", so no. But thanks.

And since that franchise appears to be dead in the water, it looks like that's all we're going to get.

Re: Robocop (remastered) - 21/1/14

the reboot is coming out February (a dumping ground for bad movies) 12th.

I'm just speculating, and I know that I'm giving the major studios too much credence, but you'd think that MGM could at least give Verhoeven his seal of approval as he done with the new version of 'Total Recall'

why is that surprising? the Trilogy DVD box is a MGM release.

We were hoping against hope that they would strike a new master from the Criterion print that was used way back when for the DVD release.

Like my initital post says, with the wording of the title on Amazon.ca it made it sound like it would be a new 4K master ala Sony's "Mastered in 4K" line.

I have no idea what the worldwide distribution rights for the movie fall under, but the fact that its MGM through Fox makes me wonder if it will be crappy like their Terminator remaster from earlier this year.

Same here. It's also a great disc for the commentary which I find much more informative and entertaining compared to the later MGM track.

I'll wait for the official specs. Anything less than the Criterion offerings and a spectacular remaster, I'll have zero interest.

Of Robocop, yes. Of Predator, sadly, no.

Why does Verhoeven allegedlly prefer the 1.66? Wasn't it shot on 35mm in 1.85?

If they're mastering it in 4K this time, hopefully the transfer will be stunning.

The Sony remasters were hit and miss, that's why I'm not holding my breath for something good. But don't get me wrong, I'm hoping for a kickass transfer.

I have both copies. The Fox disc is poor. The recalled Sony disc is even worse. Contrast and colors are cranked up to 11. It looks like a cartoon.

It was shot on 35mm with enough leeway for both ratios. It was still fairly common at the time for movies photographed "flat" to be projected at 1.85:1 in North America and 1.66:1 in Europe. Verhoeven signed off on a 1.66:1 transfer for the Criterion Laserdisc.

Re: Robocop (remastered) - 21/1/14

If that's the case, if verhoeven signs off on a 1:85 transfer for the new blu-ray, are people still going to be pissed about the ratio?

Re: Robocop (remastered) - 21/1/14

I would think it'd be dumb not to have Verhoeven "approve" the new transfer - has anyone seen the new DCP of the film - how does it look?
