Half Price Books - New DVD Thread

I have wondered why there was not a thread like this before, so finally I decided to start one. Half Price Books generally sells used books and DVDs. Obviously, used DVDs can be hit and miss depending on the store and there is no need for a national used DVD thread. However, much like Big Lots and some other places, Half Price Books also purchases extra stock and close outs of new DVDs. Once more, unlike Big Lots, they seem to also buy stock from MPI, SHOUT! Factory, A&E and TimeLife. So I thought it was worth starting a thread only for new DVDs showing up at Half Price Books. Here are some recent finds:

Sherlock Holmes Collection Volume 2 (MPI) (The House of Fear/The Spider Woman/Pearl of Death/The Scarlet Claw) $19.99
Individual DVDs of MPI's Dressed to Kill, Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon and The Woman in Green $6.98
Adventures of Don Juan (Flynn) $4.98
Dan Curtis' Dracula (Jack Palance) $2.98
Fat Albert & the Cosby Kids Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 $9.98 each

Re: Half Price Books - New DVD Thread

I go to hpb frequently. They seem to get some titles that BL does for 2-3x the price, but also some exclusives as far as overstocks. I picked up that Dracula you mentioned the other day, hope it's good!

Re: Half Price Books - New DVD Thread

There are always great little oddities at HPB. Not as cheap as BL, but you can actually find stuff there as opposed to the constant mess and disappointment of Big Lots.

I spotted the Dan Curtis Dracula as part of a double feature with his Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde (which also starred Palance) for under six bucks. The Jesse Franco Dracula (with Christopher Lee) was on the same display for $3.98, IIRC.

If you are in the Chicago area, there are coupons floating around in honor of the official opening of their Naperville store this weekend. The coupons are the usual 40% off Thursday, 30% off Friday, etc. and are good at all Chicagoland locations.

We don't have a BL around where I live but we do have these - they frequently have some interesting titles.

I picked up 2 titles from Dark Sky Films at HPB yesterday...EATEN ALIVE (Directed by Tobe Hooper) and WITHOUT WARNING, a neat "B" noir film from 1952 that has some terrific location work of Los Angeles. Both were $2.99.

I've found the Peter Cushing Sherlock Holmes tv series brick and Dark Sky's Frankenstein vs The Space Monster. Plus the Filmcrew dvd's Wild Women Of Wongo, Killers From Space, and The Giant of Marathon.

^^ x2 on Without Warning - one of the tightest minor Noir's I've seen. Multiple copies at my location. Also have seen a lot of the Fox Noir series in HPB - Where the Sidewalk Ends, Laura, Dangerous Crossing, Road House, and a couple others I don't remember.

Re: Half Price Books - New DVD Thread

I've been a regular shopper at Half Price since the mid-90s. I don't often buy their "regular" priced DVDs and CDs; usually when there's a nice 50% off coupon. (One of my top finds last year was the first big volume of Midsomer Murders, 50% off, $40 plus tax.) I try to stop once a week to check out the $3 DVD section and $1 CDs. And I often find stuff. Happily, I visited another HP in town and they'd reduced most of the $3 disks to $2. Picked up Ong Bak and American Splendor. $4, not bad. HP may be a dreadful place to sell, but it's a nice place to buy.

Re: Half Price Books - New DVD Thread

I go to hpb 2-3 times weekly, more for cd's but i always check the dvd's. Don't usually mention their dvd's here because i thought most folks on the board were spoiled by BL prices & I also thought folks weren't interested in the budget off brand stuff. Guess I was wrong!

They always have racks of that public domain stuff, like Alpha Video and whatnot. Also things like those fireplace scenes, or aquarium scenes.

A while back the one in Bloomingdale, IL had several new copies of the older Godzilla films that were in the digipack-like packaging.

I also picked up my copy of the Gamera trilogy there (with a coupon). They have it new for 12.99.

This can be bought at Amazon for $16.70 (with free shipping for orders over $25 and no ST to many of us).

I live in Dallas ... home of the HPB "mother ship" store which carries a selection 4+ times bigger than a normal HPB store ... I have learned to check online prices for new closeout DVDs, CDs and books that I see for sale at HPB.

The new set of coupons will bring their prices down to what the others like Ross charge on these. I'll wait for when the coupons become active next week.

Saw "Eaten Alive" for $4.99 and thought about buying it since I love "TCM". Anyone seen it? I see mixed reviews of course.

Problem is with the 1 item limit per store per day the gas ends up negating alot of the savings unless one is going there anyway.

Re: Half Price Books - New DVD Thread

I bring a relative and get a second item. In the past I've tried the other cashier in a busy store without a problem. But YMMV.

Re: Half Price Books - New DVD Thread

Past coupons have usually said they can only be used "ONCE PER VISIT," which theoretically means you could use one coupon, go out of the store and then return to use another one. That's two separate visits. I do what G does and just try to get another cashier. The most I've ever been able to use at one day is four, but that's at different times and using different cashiers.

Saw 1 copy of Blackbeard's Ghost for $3.99. Also saw more best of Tales of Wells Fargo, and the M Squad 2 disk set for $5.99 I think.
