There's been discussion of previous and forthcoming releases in a few threads in the HD and International forums, but I figured one official thread would be most efficent way to go from here on out. Please post all MoC HD news, reviews, pre-orders etc. here.

Very nice.

I'm pissed about Une Femme Mariee. If I had known that was coming out I would've waited on buying the DVD.

M is a definite buy, one of my favorite films. By the time it comes out I'll actually have a BD player, too!

I feel your pain there. I'm in the same boat on Une Femme Mariee. The main problem with double-dipping on R2 titles is that more often than not Amazon doesn't have a listing for the item, making a resale difficult. I'll definitely be upgrading City Girl and (hopefully) M, but I'm not sure about Mariee and Fantastic Planet double-dips. Some new content on both would be an incentive though.

There will probably be very few MoC HD double-dips in the future. This was posted on the Criterion Forum by Nick, one of their label reps:
There are only a handful of catalogue titles that we would be willing to revisit for BD. Among them, Japanese titles such as KWAIDAN, ONIBABA, and big German titles such as METROPOLIS.

Yes, absolutely, to all three -- especially Kwaidan.

I was just watching Kwaidan last night, marveling at the stunning color palatte (presented faithfully in MoC's uncut disc, which gives it two distinct advantages over the Criterion edition, not to mention the inclusion of a typically superior booklet) and thinking how wonderful it would look in HD.

Absolutely, there's massive potential for it to be a striking transfer. It sincerely is almost like watching two different films when comparing the Criterion to the Masters of Cinema disc -- not even accounting the extra footage.

I believe all MoC BDs are region free. I own two of the three currently released (and I will get the one I'm missing soon), and both of them work totally fine in my PS3. I'm pretty sure they are dedicated to keeping it like that.

For All Mankind is Region B, so I'm assuming M will be as well. Criterion did announce the latter as being an eventual Blu-ray title though.

I assume any collaboration between Criterion and MoC is contingent on each label maintaining their respective region rights.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

A region free blu-ray player is a wise investment. I highly recommend it.

Typically, I favor Criterion over MoC, but I have a nice collection of MoC titles. They've outperformed Criterion on a number of releases. I appreciate this thread... if I could have any MoC title as a Blu-ray it would be Diary of a Lost Girl. I heart Louise Brooks.

Re: The Official Masters of Cinema Blu-ray Thread

City Girl

F. W. Murnau, 1930

AVAILABLE ON DVD OR BLU-RAY

After the visual fireworks of Sunrise and the now-lost splendour of 4 Devils, F.W. Murnau turned his attention to this vivid, painterly study of an impulsive and fragile marriage among the wheatfields of Minnesota.

During a brief stay in Chicago, innocent farmer’s son Lem falls for and weds Kate, a hard-bitten but lonely waitress. Upon bringing her home at the start of harvest time, the honeymoon soon turns into a claustrophobic struggle as they contend with the bitter scorn of his father and the invasive, leering jealousy of the farm’s labouring community.

Tenderly romantic and tough-minded in equal measure, City Girl is one of cinema’s great pastorals, featuring some of the most delicate performances Murnau ever filmed and influencing directors such as Terrence Malick and Jean Vigo. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Murnau’s penultimate film in a glorious high-definition transfer.

• Restored high-definition transfer of the silent version by 20th Century Fox

• A new score, composed and arranged in 2008 by Christopher Caliendo

• Full-length audio commentary by film scholar David Kalat

• 40-page illustrated booklet with new writing and reprints
