Veep -- New HBO Series (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) -- Season 1 Thread -- 4/22/12
In yet another American remake of a great British comedy series, we'll soon be enjoying Julia Louis-Dreyfus starring in Veep, which is a remake of the the BBC series The Thick of It, about the machinations of a politician's office.
The bad news? It's about a female American vice-president. The original series is about a government minister's office. I'm not sure changing it to such an prominent/important figure is wise. The good news? Armando Iannucci, the man behind the original series, and writer/director of some of the greatest things in British comedy including Alan Partridge, is developing the show and directed the pilot. More good news? It's on HBO, so whomever the equivalent of Malcolm Tucker is going to be, they should have free reign to hurl expletives just like on the original. Of interest: Anna Chlumsky is making the transition from the film version of The Thick of It (In The Loop), and Arrested Development's Buster Bluth (Tony Hale) will also star.
Looking over the IMDB page, I wonder if the Malcolm character will be "Mike McClintock", played by Matt Walsh of Upright Citizen's Brigade fame.
With Iannucci involved, and it being on HBO, I'm hoping it doesn't get cartoonized like so many other British imports.

Re: Veep (US remake of The Thick Of It)
I'll remain doubtful
In the Loop was excellent, The Thick of it is sensational. There's no way this can translate.
the Malcolm character simply won't work on HBO or any other US Network.

Really looking forward to this one. The promos have been funny and it's funny hearing Dreyfus curse and use F bombs.

Yeah, I heard there are over 25 F bombs in the first episode. Awesome.

even after just 10 minutes, this show is fucking hilarious. If it stays this good, I smell an Emmy nod for Best Comedy

It's about time Julia Louis-Dreyfus got an HBO show. I remember years ago noticing that the early single-camera episodes of Watching Ellie had an HBO-like feel to them and thinking back then that she really should be on a show on HBO, and not network TV.

I watch anything with Seinfeld stars in it but giving the glowing reviews here I'll check out Veep for sure.

Didn't care for this at all. I didn't find it funny, the dialogue was more annoying than clever, and there wasn't one likeable character.

You are so right. I nearly turned it off after 10 mins. It's going for a West Wing meets Arrested Development vibe and fails miserably. Terrible show.

I'll pile on. Wasn't funny. Wasn't that clever. Nobody likable. Didn't enjoy it and I love JLD usually. I'm out. I'll be going to bed after Game Of Thrones and catching Girls on-demand on Monday from now on.

^i would say never judge a show just by its pilot. Remember, the pilot for entourage had most people complaining that 'none of the characters were likeable" and "its like they got guys from a beer commercial and put them all in a show" lol

I thought the pilot was terrible. All the cursing seemed forced to me than just natural conversation. It reminded me of when I saw Bob Saget's stand up for the first time. While it was kind of funny the cursing seemed out of place.
I'll give it a few more episodes to be fair.

I am a huge Julia Louis-Dreyfuss fan, but the pilot episode just wasn't funny at all. I'll give a few episodes, cause its after Game of Thrones and only a half an hour.

Didn't care for it. I'll give it another episode or two before I decide to bail or stick with it.

I enjoyed it. I loved "The Thick of It" and "In the Loop," so I came in a little predisposed to liking the show. The dialog didn't flow as naturally as it did in "The Thick of It" and "In the Loop," and I'll agree that much of the swearing seemed forced, but I still enjoyed it.
