Cloud Atlas -- D: The Wachowskis S: Hanks, Grant, Berry, Weaving -- Fall 2012

Surprised there isn't a thread about this already

Director: The Wachowskis, Tom Tykwer
Writer: The Wachowskis, Tom Tykwer
Starring:
Tom Hanks
Hugh Grant
Halle Berry
Jim Broadbent
Hugo Weaving
Jim Sturgess
James D'Arcy
Ben Whishaw
Susan Sarandon
Keith David

Plot: Based on the novel of the same name by David Mitchell. Six stories set in a different time and place become intricately related to each other.
It is an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution

Made a mistake, apparently Tykwer is not just co-writer but co-director as well.

Cool. Didn't know that this was really happening. I assume that the directors are just directing seperate timelines.

Was that the dreadful movie about Clive Owen and a bank? If so, I hated that movie so much.

Yes it was. He has a free pass from me for Run Lola Run and Perfume (also really enjoyed The Princess and the Warrior). Doesn't make The International any better and I still have no interest in seeing 3.

I love Run Lola Run, liked The Princess and the Warrior, have yet to see Perfume, and have no interest whatsoever in 3.

I like his German stuff much more than the Hollywood output. Lola rennt, Winterschläfer and Der Krieger und die Kaiserin were all very good. The International was a bore. I have yet to see Perfume. This film sounds interesting.

Perfume is his best looking movie, and for a majority of the run time plays as a really good dramatic dark comedy. The ending though comes so far out of left field that it's a bit jarring, I grew to appreciate it over time. Critically divided right down the middle (57% on Rotten Tomatoes, I remember Roeper hating the hell out of it, and Jay Leno for some reason called him out on it.)

Pretty good review of it

Re: Cloud Atlas -- D: The Wachoskis S: Hanks, Grant, Berry, Weaving -- Fall 2012

Cloud Atlas is one of the most well written novels of the past two decades imho. And I'm in for anything involving the Wachowski's. That being said I can totally see this being a flop....its basically and existential and philosophical version of Pulp Fiction. Its pretty easy to see which directors will be handling each of the six stories (dramatic - Twykner, sci-fi / future - Wachowskis).

But I'll still be there on opening day for sure.

IMO Perfume was horrible (all style & little substance).
Heaven which was written by Krzysztof Kieslowski before he died and Directed by Tykwer was excellent.

Re: Cloud Atlas -- D: The Wachowskis S: Hanks, Grant, Berry, Weaving -- Fall 2012

Kinda off-topic, but I am watching the Bulls- Sixers playoff game and did a double take following one play under the Bulls basket when I saw Lana Wachowski and her brother sitting court side. She was standing up slapping her wrist and yelling at the ref that Luol Deng got fouled. Good to see they're getting some downtime while working on this movie.

The MPAA has released its rating for the film:

Rated R for violence, language, sexuality/nudity and some drug use.

Wait, the MPAA reviewed it already, but still no trailer?

Re: Cloud Atlas -- D: The Wachowskis S: Hanks, Grant, Berry, Weaving -- Fall 2012

Is there some rule that a trailer must be released to the public when a movie is rated? I realize we often see "this film is not yet rated."

Maybe they're saving it for TDKR.

Re: Cloud Atlas -- D: The Wachowskis S: Hanks, Grant, Berry, Weaving -- Fall 2012

No. But a supposively ambitious, epic movie, being released in four months, without a trailer, with a rating. Just seems weird that there's no trailer, no promo pics.

Is the movie maybe like Speed Racer, where it's all based around sfx? Maybe the MPAA just got to watch the unfinished green screen version.

Re: Cloud Atlas -- D: The Wachowskis S: Hanks, Grant, Berry, Weaving -- Fall 2012

Hugo Weaving on Cloud Atlas:

"It was a real treat to work with such an extraordinary cast, and sometimes in any one week you might be working on three or four characters. So it's a slightly dangerous adventure we embarked on, because to be honest you don't know where it's all heading, despite the wonderful preparation. But yeah, it was certainly very exciting."

"Because the film's told in a sort of mosaic way, where all six stories are told at once, at the beginning of the shoot you'd move from one character to another. But as the shoot progressed and it got towards the end, you were seeing more links between the characters. And indeed, there might be a cut from one of your characters to another character, so there's a link between them."
