Shame (2011, Dir: McQueen) Fasbender and Carey Mulligan

Directed by Steve McQueen (the British one...and the one that's alive)
Written by McQueen and Abi Morgan (she also wrote The Iron Lady, the Thatcher biopic w/ Streep)

Brandon played by Michael Fassbender is a 30-something man living in New York City who has trouble controlling and managing his sexual compulsions once his willful younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves in.
After McQueen's last film w/ Fassbender (and Fassbender in general actually)...yeah...I'm sure to be there for this film. Interesting premise..let's see what they do with it.

The premise doesn't sound like much but I like Fassbender and Mulligan enough. I also like seeing foreign directors take on New York City. They usually provide a pretty interesting perspective on the city.

Fox Searchlight bought this at TIFF. They're doing screenings right now.

Full frontal nudity of both actors. From details I've heard this is a definite NC-17. Fassbender plays a sex addict.

I was hoping this was a remake of A Low Down Dirty Shame.

I was game for this when I made the tread...I'm still game now. Also if you google this film..holy shit...is there some nudity.

Looks like Fassbender picked up the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival for this role.

Fassbender wins Best Actor at Venice Film Festival Share

By WENN.com | Sunday, September 11, 2011

Fassbender accepted the Coppa Volpi best actor trophy at a ceremony on Saturday (10Sep11) for his performance alongside Carey Mulligan in British director Steve McQueen's latest film.

Accepting his honour, Fassbender told the crowd, "It's just really nice when you take (a) chance and you do something that you think is relevant - you hope is relevant - and people respond the way they did."

But the festival's top prize - the Golden Lion - went to Russian filmmaker Alexander Sokurov for his take on Faust, about a scholar who sells his soul to the devil.

Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky, who served as head of the festival's jury, heaped praise on Sokurov as he presented him with the Golden Lion.

Aronofsky said, "There are some films that make you cry, there are some films that make you laugh, there are some films that change you forever after you see them; and this is one of them."

A lot of visual going on in this short clip. Very nice 1min 24sec shot. Almost felt like there was no cut. Very nice music for the mood too.

<object width="600" height="396"><param name="movie" value="http://www.traileraddict.com/emd/46309"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.traileraddict.com/emd/46309" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" wmode="transparent" width="600" height="396" allowFullScreen="true"></embed></object>

the clip says it's Mulligan in there but...it's not.

I've also read too that there's some hardcore sex in the movie too, hense the almost def. NC-17/unrated rating, as the director refused to cut any of it out

Re: Shame (2011, Dir: McQueen) Fasbender and Carey Mulligan

I saw this tonight at the London Film Festival. Steve McQueen, Abi Morgan, and Michael Fassbender introduced it. I felt it had some great scenes, interesting shots/visuals, and committed performances. It provoked a fair amount of discussion and I appreciated it on an intellectual level. There are some definite directorial decisions and staging that help to build theme and character. But it never really grabbed me emotionally, I was not drawn in to the story and ultimately never cared much about the outcome. Judging by the comments on twitter following the screening I seem to be the only one who didn't find it a success in all respects. There is a lot of nudity and it is certainly one of the most explicit films I've seen.

What are some of the most explicit films you've ever seen? So we can gauge it...

I agree, 9 Songs is pretty hardcore, and messy (if you know what I mean)

I had to look that up...wow...never heard of it. Winterbottom did that film...didn't even know about it. I'll put in my mental list of films I'll see one day.

its an odd movie thats for sure, its litterally full concert performances by several bands that the couple sees, intermixed with sex scenes

Not as explicit as Nine Songs but maybe in the same ballpark. Looking back I think Shame implies more than it actually shows.

Re: Shame (2011, Dir: McQueen) Fasbender and Carey Mulligan

from Deadline

The MPAA has given an NC-17 rating to the Steve McQueen-directed Shame, which is exactly what Deadline told you would happen back when we broke the story that Fox Searchlight had acquired it at the start of the 2011 Toronto Film Festival. The rating was dealt for “some explicit sexual content,” which basically means that Michael Fassbender goes Full Monty through much of the film. McQueen expected this rating, and the deal stipulated that the winning distributor would not be permitted to change a frame of a film that everybody knew would be NC-17. Fox Searchlight will wear that rating like a badge despite the limitations that come with trying to market NC-17. Nobody feels this is a gimmick, and Shame is getting great critical response and gives Fassbender a real shot at an Oscar nomination. This might be the closest thing to Last Tango in Paris or Midnight Cowboy that we’ve seen in quite a long time.

It would be great if this gets a semi wide release and ends up being successful, proving that an NC-17 isn't the kiss of death

Re: Shame (2011, Dir: McQueen) Fasbender and Carey Mulligan

I thought this movie was absolutely incredible. Amazing, soul-wretching performance from Michael Fassbender. Although when it was finished I was barely coherent the rest of the night, it's that emotionally draining to watch. I have no desire to see it again but I highly recommend watching it at least once.

And 9 Songs sucks. Take away the sex and all you have are poorly shot concerts. As for Shame, it doesn't have any explicit sex acts. Plenty of T&A but that's it in terms of sex. Fassbender's crotch is relegated to walking around shots and one urination scene.
