GRAVITY (2013) (Cuaron, Clooney, Bullock)

Cuaron wrote the script with his son, Jonas. Downey will play the leader of a team posted at a remote space station. While he and a female colleague are traveling outside the space station, the other team members are decimated by debris from an exploded satellite.

Downey was drawn to the chance to work with Cuaron, the director of Children of Men and Y tu mama tambien. Downey will shoot the film in London this summer, finishing in time to re-team with director Guy Ritchie and Jude Law in the Sherlock Holmes sequel that will shoot early fall, also in London.

The script for Gravity had been developed originally at Universal with the intention of having Angelina Jolie play the female role. Much of the film is devoted to her struggle to get back to Earth and her daughter. Jolie passed on the project around the time Universal cut it loose.

Yeah no kidding. I'm hoping the upcoming Tron sequel will at least do something interesting with it.

If you don't like 3D, why not just go see the 2D showings? That's what I'll be doing for most of these movies that are just being converted over due to the fad.

My concern is the studios will force these films to be made with a slant towards 3D. As long as the 2D version isn't a "lesser" film in the director's eyes it would be fine.

FWIW, unless you're in a small American town, it's very hard to find theaters that show the 2D version over 3D. Apparently Alice in Wonderland only had two theaters in the entire city of Orlando showing 2D.

Cuaron and Downey make a promising combo. Wonder if this will be a candidate for the Crying Monkey Award?

I'm excited for Cuaron, Downey, and science fiction. 3D is a cherry on top, as far as I'm concerned.

After Children of Men, I'll watch anything Cuaron. As for Downey Jr., I'm a big fan.

This sounds like a day one watch for me.

I thought Jolie was confirmed...maybe not?

Nah, it sounded too similar to Brad Pitt's previous film, Message from Sector 6.

Ridiculous claim. I just looked up theaters in Orlando and 10 of the 11 multiplexes are showing it in 2D on a total of 17 screens.

And Sherlock Holmes was a big hit, so a sequel would make good financial sense.

Re: GRAVITY (2011) (dir. Cuaron) (starring Robert Downey Jr.)

Someone might want to edit this thread's title.

from Onion AV Club news

Natalie Portman is the latest actress to pass on starring in Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, a sci-fi tale from the Children Of Men director about the lone survivor of a space mission trying to return to Earth. Gravity was originally attached to Angelina Jolie, but Deadline reports that now that both she and Portman have turned it down, producers have moved on to Sandra Bullock for the role—although they're still also reportedly considering nearly every actress in the industry, including Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall, Olivia Wilde, and Blake Lively.

The way I read it, this movie is gonna star a woman whether RDJ is in it or not.
