List Thread-Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge Mar 31-Apr 30 2012

presents

The Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge!!

March 31 - April 30, 2012

100 Movies in 31 Days.

This thread is for lists only.
For discussion, go to the discussion thread here.

2011 List Thread
2010 List Thread

The Goal is 100 films. These type of films tend to be short, but they also might be a challenge to get through. Your personal goal might be higher or lower, depending on your tolerance for this type of cinema.

A film can only be counted once per list with the exception of riffed/commentaried films (see below).

This challenge is for Movies. Although we are not allowing TV shows, Made for TV Movies are allowed as are Direct to Video features.

We are allowing documentaries on B-Movies, Exploitation and Drive-ins and those involved with the production thereof. These should be features over 40 minutes.. We are also allowing trailer compilations, such as 42nd Street Forever and Something Weird compilations.
Throw a viewing party and show trailers between movies.

Mystery Science Theater 3000, Riff Trax, Cinematic Titanic, etc. are allowed. If there is a second riffed version (for example, MST3K did one, then

Cinematic Titanic did the same movie) you may watch the second and any additional riffed versions for a full credit each, but I encourage you to just

watch another movie, instead.

Commentaries. The old commentary rule is gone. All commentaries count as views.

Films that have been nominated for Oscars are discouraged but not banned. I had originally wanted this to be the only hard rule, but I came across too many exceptions.

Drive-In exception rule: Any film seen in an actual Drive-In during the challenge 2012, regardless of other qualification, counts toward your list.. Please note that it was a Drive-In Movie.

We will go with the Sci-Fi rule on TV Mini-series (one "night" equals an entry), on Serials (we'll go with an hour's worth per entry), provided they actually were theatrical serials. A serial episode is about 15-20 minutes, so an hour's worth counts as an entry. 4-15 minutes ones or 3-20 minute episodes.

There are 3 Wild Cards for non-conforming films.

For fun, keep a running tally of "before they were famous" appearances in your list.

Please number your lists. Also, it is helpful to put a link to your list in your signature. This makes it easier for others to check out your list..

For extra fun, try to complete the optional checklist. Also, try to keep a running tally in your lists of "before they were famous" appearances.

Official Checklist: (put in spoiler tags on your list)

For more descriptive definitions checkout http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploitation_film and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-movie

The following lists are Automatic Safe lists. They are not definitive and there might be exceptions therein. Generally, the presence of those on

the lists in an actual creative capacity (that is, more than just a cameo or bit part. For instance, Bruce Campbell appearing in Spider-Man does

not make Spider-Man safe) is enough to make a film safe. Got more? Post them and I'll update the list. Obviously, films not including these

participants are safe, too. Update: I added several new names to the actors list. Some of these actors appeared in actual big budget

Hollywood fare, but most of their career was in B-Movies, then obviously discard the Big Hollywood movies and just watch the B's (For example,

William Shatner. Ignore Star Trek movies but anything else is fair game. Or Patrick Swazye. Ghost is probably not right, but most of his other

films were B-Movies).

Re: List Thread-Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge Mar 31-Apr 30 20

MARCH 31
1) ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL - The greatest movie ever made? Could be.

APRIL 1
2) PUPPETMASTER - David (Tourist Trap) Schmoeller directs entertaining Full Moon production that lauched unending franchise. Hokey, but cool puppet effects. *

3) A BUCKET OF BLOOD - Dick Miller is great in rare lead role. Walter Paisley is born in Roger Corman's clever black comedy. *

APRIL 2
4) BOBBIE JO AND THE OUTLAW - Not bad criminals on the run epic with Marjoe Gortner as killer with morals. Belinda Belaski is adorable as Linda Carter's third wheel best friend. *

APRIL 3
5) THE PUPPET MONSTER MASSACRE - Low budget indie is ambitious, but doomed by unfunny script. *

6) WOMEN IN CAGES - Good WIP flick with Pam Grier and Roberta Collins. *

APRIL 4
7) HELLRAISER: INFERNO - Doug Bradley was probably on set for about an hour to film his cameo in dull serial killer thriller pretending to be "Hellraiser" sequel. A few creepy scenes, but otherwise wretched. *

APRIL 5
8) LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS - Roger Corman's legendary 2 day quickie is brisk black comedy full of spirited performances. Great fun. *

APRIL 6
9) THE NIGHTS OF TERROR (BURIAL GROUND) - Spaghetti zombies with extra cheese. Fast paced and weird with several bizarre moments provided by Peter Bark as the creepiest kid ever. *

10) MALIBU HIGH - Based on the title and poster, I was expecting a frothy California comedy not this off the wall drama. Jill Lansing stars as bored high schooler who takes up seduction, prostitution and murder to improve her grades and make money. Interesting and unpredictable. One of Crown International's better flicks. *

11) BATTLE ROYALE - Exciting and bloody action epic from Japan finally officially available in the US.

12) THE APPLE - If some of the songs were better, this would be a classic of 70's camp run dangerously amuck. A wacky biblical allegory with glitter, glam and bad rock music from director Menahem Golan. The finale is a hoot. *

APRIL 7
13) SHEBA BABY - Entertaining but routine Pam Grier vehicle. Directed by William "Grizzly" Girdler. *

APRIL 8
14) I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (2010) - I'm shocked - I liked this. It's the rape/revenge movie distilled to its essence, but somehow the addition of "torture porn" (a genre I usually dislike) made it work for me. It was really satisfying seeing these dirtbags suffer. The first act is excruciating but once the revenge starts things get kinda cool. Typical of current crop of horror remakes though, it lacks original film's subtext and sense of reality. *

15) FORBIDDEN WORLD - Roger Corman produced this awesome "Alien" rip off. Fast, gory and fun.

16) HELLRAISER: HELLSEEKER - Ashley Laurence and Doug Bradley are wasted in extended cameos. Utter crap. *

17) KING KONG LIVES - Shoddy but entertaining sequel to 1976 remake. *

18) DEATH RACE 2000 - Director Paul Bartel's still relevant satire on the US of A. A true drive-in classic.

APRIL 9
19) SCREAM BLACULA SCREAM - William Marshall and Pam Grier star in decent sequel. Some good scares and vampire makeup, but not as rad as original classic. *

APRIL 10
20) MANIAC (1934) - Wacky pre code lunacy from Dwain Esper. *

21) THE INGLORIOUS BASTARDS - Standard WWII epic. Not as wild as I was expecting. *

APRIL 11
22) CALIFORNIA DREAMING - Glynnis O'Conner is dreamy as the ultimate California girl in bittersweet coming of age story. *

APRL 12
23) HELLRAISER: HELLWORLD - Eighth entry in long running series is better, but still bad. Post modern twist is kinda interesting and there's more Cenobite action this time, but suffers from 7th sequel-itis. *

APRIL 13
24) BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS - Roger Corman's "Star Wars" riff is entertaining, but not entirely successful. The New World pickup "Starcrash" is wackier and more fun. *

25) CABIN IN THE WOODS - Pretty good meta horror comedy. *

26) FRIDAY THE 13TH PART V: A NEW BEGINNING - Trashy and stupid but director Danny Steinman gives it an energy lacking in later sequels.

27) FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) - I still love this iconic slasher opus.

APRIL 14
28) THE BIG BIRD CAGE - Pam Grier and Anitra Ford star as Americans in Filipino prison. Above average exploitation classic written and directed by Jack Hill. *

APRIL 15
29) THE BOONDOCK SAINTS - Self consciously quirky vigilante crime drama. Good performances but this one didn't quite work for me. *

30) DAMNATION ALLEY - Hard to belive 20th Century Fox thought this would be their big sci fi hit of 1977. Cheesy fun, but even at only 90 minutes it feels a bit sluggish at times.

31) HELLRAISER: BLOODLINE - The more "Hellraiser" sequels I see, the better "Friday the 13th Part 7" is starting to look.

32) THE WASP WOMAN - Producer/director Roger Corman's tale of bad science, eternal youth and royal jelly. Silly potboiler. *

APRIL 16
33) GALAXY OF TERROR - Ambitious sci fi epic from New World is b-movie classic. The story is a bit wacky, but the performances and special effects are killer. One of my favorite Roger Corman productions.

APRIL 18
34) PINK ANGELS - Disjointed and amateurish yet oddy entertaining story of gay biker gang en route to drag ball. More a series of vignettes than an actual plot. Features likable performances, a catchy soundtrack and a helluva ending. *

35) TWO THOUSAND MANIACS! - Overlong, but not bad HG Lewis gore flick.

36) CRAZY MAMA - Another outlaws on the run period piece from New World Pictures. Light hearted (mostly) with a good cast. *

APRIL 19
37) ACT OF VENGEANCE (RAPE SQUAD) - A grindhouse Lifetime movie. Five former victims of a hockey mask wearing, Jingle Bells singing serial rapist team up to help abused women and track their assailant. Exploitive but sincere! *

APRIL 20
38) BEACH PARTY - First of many AIP beach movies. Sex obsessed but chaste teens hit the coast for surf, sand and music with usual wacky results. *

39) MACHETE MAIDENS UNLEASHED! - Fascinating doc about Filipino film industry. *

APRIL 21
40) TINTORERA - "Jules and Jim" meets marine life snuff film in Rene Cardona Jr's lame "Jaws" riff. Equal parts boring and reprehensible. Infrequent shark attack scenes are gory though. *

41) VIGILANTE - Gritty crime drama from director William (Maniac) Lustig. Good action, music and performances. Above average. *

42) MY NAME IS BRUCE - A clever idea, but just not very funny. Bruce Campbell plays himself in self aware parody of Bruce Campbell and fandom.

APRIL 22
43) SUGAR HILL - Cool blaxploitation horror film. Marki Bey is smokin' as woman using voodoo and zombies to exact revenge on mobsters who killed her boyfriend. Wild, colorful and fun. Robert Quarry co-stars as lead baddie. *

44) CORMAN'S WORLD - Delightful documentary about the career of Roger Corman. Pretty much everyone you'd want to hear from makes an appearance to dish on indie film guru. Jack Nicholson is reduced to tears at one point! Highly recomended. *

APRIL 23
45) THE WILD ANGELS - Peter Fonda stars as brooding gang leader in Roger Corman's influential biker flick. Dark, edgy and unapologetically antisocial. Good stuff. *

APRIL 24
46) DEVIL'S ANGELS - John Cassavetes leads biker gang in AIP's contemplative follow up to "Wild Angels". Intriguing, nihilistic script by Charles B. Griffith and a great soundtrack. *

APRIL 25
47) YOUNG AND WILD (1958) - Standard JD melodrama. Not bad but not very memorable either. *

48) THE GLORY STOMPERS - Simpler (and less interesting) than previous AIP biker flicks. Dennis Hopper is good as leader of the bad guys. *

APRIL 26
49) PICTURE MOMMY DEAD - This movie scared me to death when I saw it as a wee one but not so much today. Silly and a bit campy, but I can see what creeped me out back then. The worms crawl in....

APRIL 27
50) DETROIT 9000 - Twisty blaxpoitation crime drama. Nice performance from Alex Rocco as crusty cop investigating big money rip off of black gubernatorial candidate. Good script and well directed by Arthur Marks. *

51) THE CYCLE SAVAGES - Another nutty biker gang, another nutty performance by Bruce Dern. Not bad, but not as subversive as others in this genre. *

52) HIGH SCHOOL HELLCATS - Mean girls circa 1958. *

53) TROLL 2 - Bad movie nirvana.

APRIL 28
54) PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE - More bad movie nirvana. Now in HD!

55) TOMMY - What better way to celebrate Ann-Margret's birthday than watching her come unglued to the sweet sounds of the Who?

APRIL 29
56) THE PACK - Nature goes amuck again this time with abandoned dogs attacking folks trapped on a vacation island. Frankly, the dogs had a righteous anger and I was rooting for 'em! Final scene is genuinely touching. *

57) FRITZ THE CAT - Funny, shocking, sexy, horrific, silly, offensive...nobody made 'em like Ralph Bakshi! X-rated cartoon satire of late 60's/early 70's America could give you a contact high. *

58) THE DELINQUENTS - Robert Altman wrote and directed this JD drama. Early role for Tom (Billy Jack) Laughlin. *

59) THE MADMEN OF MADORAS (THEY SAVED HITLER'S BRAIN) - A great premise is wasted in dull thriller. *

60) SONNY BOY - If Terrence Malick had brain damage and went on a 7 day acid bender, he might write something like this. Strange, funny, disturbing and oddly poetic.

APRIL 30
61) VICE SQUAD - About as perfect a grindhouse crime flick as you're likely to find. Story of one event filled night on the streets of LA is nonstop action classic. Lean, mean and gritty with a great menacing performance by Wings Hauser.

62) BLOOD FEAST - Original gore film is starting to grow on me.

63) HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD - Allan Arkush and Joe Dante's low budget satire about life on the exploitation circut is a true comedy gem. A New World classic and the perfect way to wrap up the festivities.

'BYE FOR NOW!

Re: List Thread-Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge Mar 31-Apr 30 20

In for 3 or 4. (edit to later add: well, it was only 2)

1 - MST3K Action film - Bridged with the Action/Adventure Challenge. Forget the title at the moment.

2 - Monster Mania - Documentary that I didn't enjoy nearly as much as I planned.

First-time views

March 31
1. She Shoulda Said NO! (1949). YouTube. I love this film's pretensions of elevating the drug hysteria trope by adding theremin music and introducing
an ALL-STAR HOLLYWOOD CAST. And who knew that "tomatoes" was slang for marijuana?

2. Bound (1996). DVD. A terrific crime thriller from the makers of The Matrix where the gay couple come out on top. Yay!
3. Stunt Rock (1980). TV. An pointless film combining an Australian stunt man doing daredevil feats with a Spinal Tap-esque band from LA

April 1
4. Xanadu (1980). Theatrical. Watched it at the AFI Silver with a couple of friends. A fun, if inept, musical, a true guilty pleasure.

April 2
5. Chatterbox (1977). Online. A hairstylist's vagina acquires a mind of its own and becomes a successful singer! What were they putting in the water in the 70s?
6. Vigilante Force (1976). TV. More 70s fun with Jan-Michael Vincent as a trucker who forms a VIGILANTE FORCE that runs out of control.

April 3
7. This Is Not a Test! (1962). YouTube. Nuclear hysteria flick from the Cold War era, in which a group of strangers are stuck on a highway as they anticipate a nuclear strike. I was initially unimpressed, but this actually turns out to be gripping and suspenseful.
8. The Carrier (1988). YouTube. Small town outcast becomes infected with a deadly virus that melts anything that touches what he touched. With a bigger budget and a better script, this would make a damned scary remake in the right hands.

April 4
9. Stop Me Before I Kill! (1960). DVD. A race car driver is obsessed with killing his wife. The film's denouement surprised me.
10. Cash On Demand (1962). DVD. A pleasure to see Peter Cushing playing a character outside his usual Hammer horror roles. He plays a bank manager who starts out as an unlikeable office dictator but ends up become more sympathetic by the film's end.

April 5
11. The Masque of the Red Death (1964). DVD. Happy 86th birthday, Roger Corman!

April 6
12. More (1969). fliiby.com. A German guy becomes a drug addict, set to an awesome Pink Floyd soundtrack.

April 9
13. Cotton Comes To Harlem (1970). DVD. A hilarious blacksploitation crime film about a corrupt preacher getting taken down by Harlem cops
14. Evil Bong (2006). DVD. WTF did I just watch?
15. The Devils (1971). DVD. Ken Russell's masterpiece, along with Women In Love, and definitely Oliver Reed's greatest role as hypocritical horndog Fr.Urbain Grandier, who had the bad fortune to get in Cardinal Richelieu's way

April 10
16. Hellraiser: Revelations (2011). Netflix. Yet another crap sequel. Hellraiser in Mexico!
17. Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives (2010). Netflix.I watched this because it stars Willam from the current season of Rupaul's Drag Race, but this cinematic love child of Quentin Tarantino and Russ Meyer is actually fun, in a low-rent fashion.

April 11
18. Hard Ticket to Hawaii (1988). DVD. First out of the gate from the Andy Sidaris box. I think an appreciation of large breasts is essential for this film.
19. Terror House, AKA Terror at Red Wolf Inn (1972). YouTube. Stupid girl falls for transparent scam, ends up dodging elderly cannibals.
20. Don't Go In The House! (1979). YouTube. I've been looking for this movie for ages! Burn, baby, burn!

April 12
21. Crime Against Joe (1956). Netflix.Hunky John Bromfield plays a drunken average schmoe who gets framed for a nightclub singer's murder.
22. 10 to Midnight (1983). Netflix.Charles Bronson is a detective hunting down sexy naked serial killer Gene Davis

April 13
23. Without Warning (1980). YouTube. Jack Palance, Martin Landau, Larry Storch. . . was The Love Boat not hiring? This flick is a veritable feast of "Hey, it's That Guy!" casting.
24. Blood Tide (1982). YouTube. Jose Ferrer and James Earl Jones must have owed money to somebody to make them act in this monster flick.

April 14
25. The Devil's Rain (1975). YouTube. TCM should have Borgnine explain this film the next time they have him on as a guest.

April 15
Watched Titanic-related shows, so nothing eligible.

April 16
26. Hideout (1949). Netflix.Jewel thief relocates to small town in the Midwest and underestimates the town's DA, played by a young Lloyd Bridges.
27. Deep Shock (1976). TV. Deadly electric eels from outer space!
28. Support Your Local Gunfighter (1971). TV. Any time James Garner plays a con man in a western, he's just doing a riff on his Maverick character.
29. Support Your Local Sheriff (1969). TV. More James Garner goodness. I really need to pick these up someday

April 17
30. Cabin in the Woods (2012). Theatrical. Complete awesomeness. Can't wait for the Blu-Ray!

April 18
32. The Shanghai Cobra (1945). DVD. Charlie Chan films are a hoot!
33. The Time Travelers (1964). YouTube. One of AIP's rare forays into science fiction, The Time Travelers is a lot of fun to watch and deserves a DVD release.
34. Hot Rods to Hell (1967). TV. Lamest teen thugs ever.
35. It's A Bikini World (1967). TV. Tommy Kirk is no Frankie Avalon
36. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978). DVD. I actually like this movie--say what you will about the Bee Gees, but they cover the Beatles really well.

April 19
37. Red Planet Mars (1954). TV. Silly religious claptrap
38. Queen of Outer Space (1958). TV. Eric Fleming was one handsome fella
39. The Wasp Woman (1959). TV. With such a great title you'd think the movie would be more interesting.

April 20
40. Bikini Beach (1964). TV. Avalon gets to play two roles.

April 21
41. Crack in the World (1965). Netflix.I don't understand why a color film uses B/W stock footage.
42. Willie Dynamite(1973). Netflix. No nudity and no blood. For a blaxploitation film this is a sensitive portrayal of a thoroughly nasty character getting his comeuppance.
43. Drum (1976). Netflix.Sort of a sequel to Mandingo, this movie delivers drive sex, nudity and violence galore.

April 22
44. Hercules and the Masked Rider (1963). DVD.Blatant false advertising. This is a movie about Don Juan in the 16tApril 24h century.
45. Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon (1963). DVD.This is more like it.
46. Alien Tornado (2012). TV. Energy beings attack Chicago with sparkly tornadoes.

April 23
47. The Creeping Unknown (1955). TV. Terrific film. Even though the monster that used to be a human is fairly silly looking, it's still one of the better science fiction films of the 50s.
48. The Green Slime (1969). TV. Best theme song ever.

April 24
49. A Girl, a Gun, and a Noodle Shop (2010). TV. Zhang Yi Mou has made some amazing films, and even in this bizarre retread of the Coen Brothers' Blood Simple, the visuals are dazzling. However, the film itself is a mess; it doesn't seem to know if it wants to be a wacky comedy or a drama.

April 25
50. Pink Flamingos (1972). DVD. Had to mark the 50-movie mark with the grandaddy of shocksploitation. The trouble with being transgressive is that as time progresses, the content is no longer all that shocking, not ot mention that the terabytes of porn online have rendered the film's more sensational scenes quaint.

April 26.
51.The Harder They Come (1972). Hulu. Interesting crime film with iconic Jimmy cliff soundtrack, but the dialogue needs subtitles

April 27
52. The Haunted Palace (1963). DVD. One of my favorites in the Poe/Price/Corman series, although this actually an adaptation of a Lovecraft story.
53. Tower of London (1962). DVD. Leave it to Roger Corman to turn the history of Richard III into a ghost story, although to be fair Shakespeare had ghosts in his story, too.

April 28
54. Kings of the Sun (1963). TV. Action story set in pre-Columbian Texas where a group of Mayan refugees run into conflict with the local Indians
55. Mongolian Death Worms (2006).TV I liked it better when it was called Tremors.
56. Stonehenge Apocalypse (2010). TV I only watched this because it has Misha Collins who plays Castiel on Supernatural. It was less awful than the average run of made-for-Syfy movies, but it was still pretty bad.
57. Alien Twister (2012). TV. Higgs bosons create gas-giant style storms on earth or something like that. I really didn't get the plot.

April 30
58. Knightriders (1981). DVD A George Romero film about idealism and loyalty with no zombies.

2010 B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-in Movie Challenge List - 104
2011 B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-in Movie Challenge List - 105

4/1/12

1) Killpoint (1984) - Grabbed the first disc out of Mill Creek's "Explosive Cinema" set to start things off. A police detective (Leo Fong) is trying to catch a psycho-killer/illegal gunrunner (Cameron Mitchell) and his henchman (Stack Pierce). Richard Roundtree pops up as a detective in about a half dozen scenes. Lots of gunplay, a little chop socky, several really bad country songs, and a couple of boobs (three if you count Cameron Mitchell).
2) Low Blow (1986) - Leo Fong returns (along with just about everyone else from the last movie) as a down-on-his-luck private eye who is hired to rescue a rich man's daughter from a cult run by Cameron Mitchell (nutty as ever) and Akosua Busia (cute as a button). Stack Pierce is a down-on-his-luck boxer who Fong hires to be part of his mercenary team.

4/2/12

3) 9 Deaths of the Ninja (1985) - I'm guessing, going by the goofy interpretive dance title sequence alone, that this was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek action flick. It was amusing anyway, whether intentional or not. Sho Kosugi and Brent Huff (the guy from The Perils of Gwendoline) are anti-terrorist agents called in when a busload of tourists are kidnapped by a Dr. Strangelove wannabe and his henchwomen (led by Regina Richardson, who I just saw last month in Tightrope). If not for one gratuitous boob shot, and a murder or three, this would be a great kid's movie.
4) The Patriot (1986) - After Stack Pierce (again) and a couple of goofballs steal a nuclear warhead, Leslie Nielsen drafts former SEAL Gregg Henry back into service to recover the bomb before it goes off. Jeff Conaway (that guy from Taxi) and the always entertaining Michael J. Pollard are in it too.
5) Professor Lust (1967) - I got tired of Crown International flicks, so I switched gears. A mild-mannered college professor partakes in a drug he developed, and becomes a drug dealer/pornographer/pimp (not sure why they didn't just go ahead and call it "The Naughty Professor") who drugs women so they'll have sex with undesirable men. The SWV DVD-R copy seems to be missing a reel or two midway, but that's probably all there is of it anywhere.
6) Torture Me Kiss Me (1970) - Early Nazisploitation film featuring guys in Nazi uniforms, chicks in short dresses (I guess the costume rental place didn't have 1940's clothes for women), and some WWII stock footage. The orgy scene promised in the trailer
Spoiler:
consisted of two guys and three topless girls making out in an office (along with several hilarious Wishmanesque cutaways to a portrait of Hitler). NY sexploitation vet Uta Erickson pops up in a lesbian scene about halfway through the flick.

4/3/12

7) Top Cop (1990) - Disc two out of Mill Creek's "Explosive Cinema" set: Arkansas cop works to bring down a drug kingpin.

4/4/12

8) The Silencer (1992) - A hitwoman who gets her orders from a video game, is stalked by Chris Mulkey (I recognized him, but I only know his name because I read the credits) as she kills a few people. Morton Downey, Jr. was in it, for some reason. Man, I hated this one.
9) Scorpion (1986) - Chuck Norris wannabe battles terrorists. I decided to skip the last film on this disc, Van Nuys Blvd., because I watched it during a previous Challenge.
10) Paradise in Harlem (1939) - After witnessing a murder, a black actor flees Harlem and heads south to take up alcoholism. Soon his life-long dream of performing Othello takes him back to Harlem.
11) Schlock! The Secret History of American Movies (2000) - Documentary about exploitation films. Features interviews with Samuel Z. Arkoff, Roger Corman, David Friedman, Doris Wishman, and others.
12) Iron Angel (1964) - Disc three out of Mill Creek's "Explosive Cinema" set: Ultra-low budget Korean War flick about a few soldiers and a M*A*S*H nurse they run into while on a mission.
13) The Hostage (1967) - The "cinematography by Ted V. Mikels" credit told me I was in for a good time. A young couple and their bratty little bastard are moving from an apartment to a house somewhere in Iowa. The kid stows away on the moving van with bad guys, Don Kelly and Harry Dean Stanton. John Carradine plays a bum who's accused of abducting the kid.

4/5/12

14) Terror in the Jungle (1967) - Plane crashes in the Amazon, and a guy goes to the jungle to look for his kid (who's being held by an Incan dance troupe). This is the second "Magicmation Effects" (a stop-motion technique used for gore effects) movie I've seen in the last six months (the other was Legend of Horror (1971), produced by the same guy, Enrique Torres Tudela). I doubt there's a third.
15) The Skydivers (1963) - Not sure if I've seen this one before (or just the MST3K version), but decided I might as well go ahead and watch it since it was already in the DVD player. Soap opera tale about people jumping out of airplanes. Bad acting. Stupid dialogue ("Coffee? I like coffee."). I've seen far worse.

4/6/12

16) Naked - As Nature Intended (1961) - British nudist camp movie follows five girls across country as the narrator points out historic spots (Stonehenge, etc.) and gives a little history lesson. Finally the travelogue ends when the girls get to a beach where they frolic under an overcast sky, then walk around a nudist camp (carrying strategically placed towels, of course).
17) I Crossed the Color Line (The Black Klansman) (1966) - Directed by Ted V. Mikels. After his daughter is killed when Klansmen firebomb a church, a light-skinned black guy buys a wig and joins the Klan.
18) Raw Meat (1972) -

4/7/12

19) Detroit 9000 (1973) -
20) Bamboo Gods and Iron Men (1973) -
21) Linda Lovelace for President (1975) -

Re: List Thread-Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge Mar 31-Apr 30 20

last year 21
Personal goal 31
(ratings are on a scale of 5)

1. March 31: Four Of The Apocolypse... 1975, NR, DVD
A gambler, prostitute, drunk and a ghost whisperer embark on a strange jounery after the town they meet in is slaughtered by masked outlaws. During their travels they encounter a menacing baddie named Chaco who continuously harasses our heros.

this was pretty good, the bad guy Chaco was extra badass until the final showdown and the whole travelogue was accompanied by some silly folk music that liked to point out the obvious. overall i could have used some more shoot outs but it remained watchable throughout.

rating: 2.5 B's

2. March 31: Humanoids From The Deep A.K.A. Monster 1980, R, Netflix Streaming
"From the caverns of the deep...IT STRIKES!" Mutated fish-faced crustacean humanoids terrorize a tiny fishing village and rape their women. Meanwhile the arrival of a new canning company is threatening to destroy their quaint villa and take their jobs. Can you guess what's the worst threat and who might be responsible?

This could have been an absolute cult masterpiece if there where more jokes added to this movie (in its defense there is one comical moment involving a ventriloquist, his dummy and a naked girl in a tent on a beach). The gore is pretty good, as well as the creature costumes. There are way more explosions in this movie than i was expecting.
Spoiler:
this movie has a fantastic beheading scene during the carnival massacre that would have been amazing to have seen on the big screen.

rating: 3 B's

3. April 1: They Live 1988, R, Netflix Streaming
"You see them on the street. You watch them on TV. You might even vote for one this fall. You think they're people just like you. You're wrong. Dead wrong." A drifting jean wearer (played by pro wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper) stumbles upon a pair of Raybans that allow him to see aliens and the subliminal messages they use to control the planet. shit then hits the fan cause Rowdy isn't gonna stand by and let this go down, at least not without a fight.

This is a cult favorite that i've just finally caught up with. Directed by John Carpenter this is full of cheesy lines and pokes at consumerism but it never takes itself seriously which makes it a lot of fun. there is a five minute alley fight easily makes any top ten film fights list.

rating: 3.5 B's

4. April 1: The Raid: Redemption 2011, R, Theater
"1 Ruthless Crime Lord, 20 Elite Cops, 30 Floors of Hell." A police special operations unit gets trapped in a building run by a ruthless crime lord. Our heros are forced to punch, kick, shoot and stab their way to freedom.

This is some serious heart pounding action. The film has a great sense of claustrophobia, paranoia and of course nonstop brutal face breaking action. The whole thing is visceral, intense and a lot of fun. highly recommended.

rating: 4 B's

5. April 3: Search and Destroy 1979, PG, DVD
A showering Vietnam vet finds out is old army buddies are being murdered one by one and he might be next. Our hero peels out his rusty fiat into every driveway in town to find the killer and with two indifferent cops constantly holding him up from finding the killer he is forced to take an automatic weapon to the streets and serve up some justice.

Uh? this is almost entertaining if only for some funny fight scenes that always move from an urban environment suddenly to a foresty rocky hillside. The interactions with the cops and our hero Kip are always fun. And whats Kip mostly up to? Not using the doors on his car ever and unloading automatic weapons trying to kill the guy trying to kill him. i'm thinking i should avoid PG films that I actually expect to have R material in them.

rating: 1 B

6. April 5: 200mph 2011, R, Netflix Streaming
"Some Limits should never be crossed." a skinny college bound adrenaline junkies older brother is killed in a high speed car race. During the wake our hero dramatically calls out his bro's killer and vengefully challenges him to a race. Is his pussy ride of a car up to the challenge?

This was pretty bad, acting, special effects, storyline etc. still it was somehow compelling and kinda has everything you might need in this sort of a movie, strip clubs, car chases, foot chases, dramatic funerals, drug dealers, murder etc. don't get me wrong though its still crappy.

rating:1.5 B's

7. April 6: Street Racer 2008, R, Netflix Streaming
"At 130 MPH, you're never more ALIVE... or closer to DEAD!" An ex con is released form prison after crippling a young boy in a high speed car chase and soon finds himself pushed back into the illegal street race circuit by his crooked parole officer.

this is better than 200mph but not by much. The acting is slightly better but there are no boobs. There doesn't seem to be a line of dialogue where the main characters name isn't said a million times (a drinking game could easily accompany this). there is an old scruffy mentor that is a low budget Nick Nolte and makes this worth the watch.

rating: 2 B's

8. April 7: Titanic II 2010, NR, Netflix Streaming
"100 years later, lightning stikes twice." Mega rich bonehead builds a replica of the Titanic, deems it Titanic II and set sail exactly 100 years later. Nothing could go wrong a second time right?

Stupid in so many ways you can't stop watching. yep an icberg gets plowed into this ship via tsunami wave and just when everyone is scrambling for life boats a super tsunami hits our seagoers. A lot of elevators where used when this ship was going down? it was also fun to watch people pretend to fall down in a mall that is actually supposed to be part of the ship. The special effects where bad but better than i would have thought.

rating:1 B

9. April 7: The Big Bird Cage 1972, R, Netflix Streaming
"Women so hot with desire they melt the chains that enslave them!" An exotic model type flirts with the Prime Minister of some Central American local and winds up grinding sugar in an womens prison. Soon a gang revolutionaries led by Pan Grier and Sid Haig set up to break a bunch of these ladies out of their chaines to help fuel their comrades need for females.

This was fun, Pam Grier is sexy as ever and the scenes with her and Haig definitely steel the show. The whole thing is silly beyond belief but a good deal of fun. If i'm not mistaken the lead actress Anitra Ford was one of Bob Barker's Beauties on the Price is Right.

rating: 3 B's[/U]

10. April 8: Twinkle, Twinkle, Lucky Stars 1985, NR, Netflix Streaming
6 guys with weird names have to protect a young girl who might be recieving some information about a gangster and they protect her by trying to do whatever they can to see her naked. Meanwhile super cop Jackie Chan and partners are on the streets trying to nail the dudes responsible for killing somebody and trying to kill someother folks. you know assassin type stuff.

It seems i started this Trilogy in the wrong direction which left me very confused for the forst hour or so. Once the action kicked in though it was pretty good, definitely worth it to see a young Andy Lau fight along side Jackie Chan in a great wharehouse scene. The cover art would make you think this is a Jackie Chan film but for most of the film its a stupid sexist comedy with some fighting in the end. Best use of tennis rackets in a fight so far.

rating: 2.5 B's

11. April 8: The Driver 1978, R, DVD
"To break the driver, the cop was willing to break the law." The driver drives, a gambler gambles and a crooked cop does crooked things to catch the driver driving by setting up the gambler and in the end everyone takes one big chance to come up with the big win.

This is my favorite of the challeng so far. Ryan O'neal is great along with Bruce Dern you really can't keep your eyes off these guys. The car chases are badass and the whole movie is just plain cool. great ending and lot of fun all around. my second favorite wharehouse fight of the challenge.

rating: 4 B's

12. April 10: Game of Death 1978, R, Netflix Streaming
Billy-Lo sometimes played by Bruce Lee is a famous action star who is being forced to fight in some gangsters death match. After faking hsi death Lo hunts down the baddies responsible and takes them out one by one.

This is a great intro to Brucesploitation cinema. Lee died before this movie was finished and since a good chunk of footage was lost in some archives the movie was re-edited and re-shot with other actors hiding their faces with fake beards or big sunglasses. Lee is in this thing for about 15 minutes but those 15 are definitely worth it. the first half of this is silly, poorly dubbed and just feels strange becuase it seems so far from what the original story was. The final archival fights though with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and a few others are fantastic.

rating: 3 B's

13. April 22: Super Fuzz 1980, PG, DVD
"The funniest super hero of them all." Terence hill is a dopey cop who gets sprayed with radiation the results of which give him the wackiest super powers ever.

This is some dumb shit, maybe it was my mood but i rarely found this funny. the super powers that show up here make no sense. We get, see through walls, breath underwater, not die, run fast, crawl on ceiling, blow a giant bubble with bubblegum that can fly and carry two grown men, talk with fish, dive through walls, and the color red is our heros kryptonite. rarley funny and full of bad acting even from Ernest Borgnine.

rating: 1 B

* denotes first time viewing

March 31
1. Thou Shalt Not Kill* (Becker, 1983, Blu-Ray) - Great way to start things off. Click here for my review of the film and blu-ray!
2. Ghanian Video Tales* (Wendl, 2005, Stream) An interesting look into the Ghanian film market and films themselves.
3. Race With The Devil* (Starrett, 1975, DVD) This is what happens when you mix horror and carsploitation... with an RV.
4. Necropolis* (Hickey, 1987, DVD) The part of this movie worth watching happened about an hour after it should have.

April 1
5. Candy Stripe Nurses* (Holleb, 1974, DVD) A little less sex driven than expected but still a good time
6. Slaughter Party* (Rosenberg, 2005, TV) Just plain garbage.
7. Debauchery* (Ito, 1983, DVD) The film lives up it's name. Read about the DVD here

April 2
8. The Spaghetti West* (Gregory, 2005, Stream) A good starting point for beginner SW fans
9. 3 Bullets For Ringo*(Salvi, 1966, DVD) - This one just didn't do it for me.

April 3
10. Cemetery Without Crosses* (Hossein, 1969, Stream) Very good spaghetti western
11. Barbarian Queen* (Olivera, 1985, DVD) Lots of attractive women sword fighting and being naked. Entertaining.
12. Night Train Murders* (Lado, 1975, Blu-Ray) Meaner and nastier than Last House on the Left.

April 4
13. Blood Feast* (Lewis, 1963, Blu-Ray) Silly and fun just as a HGL picture should be
14. Two Thousand Maniacs* (Lewis, 1964, Blu-Ray) Pretty good stuff. Some mean games of torture going on
15. Color Me Blood Red* (Lewis, 1965, Blu-Ray) More solid HGL fare.

April 5
16. True Story Of A Woman In Jail: Sex Hell* Women in prison sexploitation. Dvd review here
17. Fire & Ice* (Bakshi, 1983, Stream) Entertaining but a bit lacking in any sort of story.
18. 2012: Zombie Apocalypse* (Lyon, 2011, Stream) Pretty crappy but slightly entertaining in how bad it is.

April 6
19. Bells Of Death* (Yueh, 1968, DVD) A Shaw Bros Kung-Fu flick that plays out like a spaghetti western. Cool.
20. Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama* (DeCoteau, 1988, DVD) This is cheap fun. ALOT OF CHEAP FUN.
21. Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Cleaver* (Butler, 2011, DVD) Incredibly stupid movie plus beers was fun.

April 7
22. Exterminators Of The Year 3000* (Carnimeo, 1983, DVD) I love trashy post-apocalyptic action sci-fi movies
23. Blue Sunshine* (Lieberman, 1976, DVD) This is very reminiscent of Cronenberg.

April 8
24. Congo (Marshall, 1995, DVD) A favorite since childhood.
25. The Mechanic* (Winner, 1972, DVD) Bronson is a badass. He made this movie a success.
26. School Of The Holy Beast (Suzuki, 1974, DVD) One of the finest exploitation films around.
27. Death Laid An Egg* (Questi, 1968, Stream) Better writing and this one would have been good.

April 9
28. Trip With The Teacher* (Barton, 1975, DVD) Pretty solid flick
29. Night Call Nurses* (Kaplan, 1972, DVD) Hot nurses getting into crazy situations and dropping their clothes often? Sign me up.

April 10
30. Violence In A Women's Prison* (Mattei, 1982, DVD) If Bruno Mattei did one thing well it was making ridiculously entertaining movies.
31. Schoolgirl Hitchhikers* (Rollin, 1973, DVD) Hokey movie, great boobs.

April 11
32. The Five Days* (Argento, 1973, DVD-R) More entertaining than expected but I'll still be taking my Argento with horror.
33. The Last House On The Beach* (Prosperi, 1978, DVD) LHOTL rip off that just doesn't quite get there.
34. Caged Heat* (Demme, 1974, DVD) Not the best WIP flick you'll ever see but still a good bit of fun

April 12
35. Jackson County Jail* (Miller, 1976, DVD) This one didn't do much for me.
36. Jason And The Argonauts (Chaffey, 1963, Blu-Ray) Simply put, this is just a fun adventure!
37. Lone Wolf And Cub 3: Baby Cart To Hades* (Misumi, 1972, DVD) More greatness from this series.

April 13
38. Godzilla: Final Wars* (Kitamura, 2004, DVD) Aliens and monsters fighting for Earth... it had to be fun.
39. Cherry, Harry And Raquel* (Meyer, 1970, DVD) Not my favorite Russ Meyer film
40. Common Law Cabin* (Meyer, 1967, DVD) Entertaining but the lack of explicit nudity hurts almost any Russ Meyer film.
41. Ilsa: She Wolf Of The SS* (Edmonds, 1975, Stream) I think this is the first naziploitation that wasn't half bad

April 14
42. Baba Yaga* (Farina, 1973, Blu-Ray) This movie would benefit from picking what it wanted to be.
43. Cabin In The Woods* (Goodard, 2012, Theater) Really entertaining stuff!

April 15
44. Video Vixens* (Pachard, 1975, TV) That's enough from the Troma OnDemand channel for 1 month.
45. Class Of 1984* (Lester, 1982, DVD) Awesome movie
46. Class Of 1999* (Lester, 1990, DVD)

April 16
47. Crime Zone* (Llosa, 1989, Streaming) Moderately entertaining

April 17
48. Killer Clans* (Chor, 1976, DVD) Top notch Shaw Brothers.
49. Between God, The Devil And A Winchester* (Girolami, 1968, DVD) Nothing special, though it probably could have been.

Re: List Thread-Third Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge Mar 31-Apr 30 20

Red, Bloody Red = First time viewing

March 31
1. MST3K: The Incredible Melting Man - They must have blown the budget on Rick Baker's extra-gooey special effects make-up for this one, leaving them to skimp on lighting, actors, script. Doesn't even have "The End?" type ending as most creature features as Melty eventually dissolves into a puddle and gets scooped into a trash barrel by a nonplussed worker. Some good riffs, including a running joke about crackers.

2. The Devil's Rain (1975) - Coincidentally enough, more melting people. Ernest Borgnine is the leader of a satanist cult, holed up in a high desert ghost town, terrorizing a local family for a book of soul contracts that's in their possession. William Shatner and Tom Skerritt are brothers in that family, who try to defeat the cult. Pretty spectacular ending with dozens of cult members melting in the rain and an exploding church. Real-life satanic cult leader Anton LeVay was a technical adviser and actor for this film. Before They Were Famous Alert: this is John Travolta's first cinematic role.

April 1
3. Madmen of Mandoras (1963) - International intrigue! Nazis! Government agents! Hitler's head in a jar! Government agent Phil Day and his wife, Kathy, get caught up in Nazi plans to eliminate most of the world's population with poison gas. Yet, even though they're embroiled in abductions and murder, they still find time to shop for dishes in Mandoras. These light humor attempts make it seem like Ward and June Cleaver fighting the Nazis.

April 4
4. The Ambushers (1967) &
5. The Wrecking Crew (1969) - The last two Matt Helm films with Dean Martin. Since spies were big in the '60s, everybody was getting into the act and these movies take the tongue-in-cheek, '60s camp approach. Matt Helm is a world famous American photographer, but is also a reluctant agent for ICE. Evil masterminds hijack something of great value: an experimental flying saucer in The Ambushers and a billion dollars in gold in The Wrecking Crew. Matt is sent in to quietly resolve these crimes, to prevent widespread international turmoil. Invariably, this involves lots of women in bikinis and lingerie, fancy gadgets and Dino making tons of double entendres about broads and booze (and a few friendly jabs at Frank Sinatra).

April 6
6. Pick-up (1975) - In the exploitation movie world, there are countless cases of a film posing as a "nature film" to feature nudity. Pick-up seems to work the other way around, posing as a nudie film to feature nature.
I'm not quite sure what the title refers to. Is it Chuck, a young man delivering a bus-sized RV across Florida, picking up two women, Carol and Maureen, from the highway? Or is it the pick-up truck, loaded with whoopin' rednecks that's briefly featured in the film? Anyway, Chuck offers a ride to Carol and Maureen and thanks to some bad weather and confusing detours, they end up stuck in a Florida swamp. No one seem too bothered by the predicament, as they take the opportunity to explore the swamp (and each other!) There's plenty of nudity and lots of cinematography devoted to the flora and fauna of the Everglades. Characterization and story development seems tacked on, mostly in the form of Maureen's hallucinatory visions of a ancient goddess, an oily politician, a scary clown and her memories of a molesting church pastor. Other intrusions of this idyllic return to nature includes Chuck's boss, who keeps calling to complete the delivery of the RV and the whoopin' rednecks, who chase down Carol. There's no need for resolution, because the end goes back to the beginning of the film and the entire ordeal seems to have occurred in Maureen's imagination.

7. The Teacher (1974) - Beautiful, but lonely teacher Diane seduces recent graduate Sean. Creepy stalker Ralph, who frequently spies on Diane, also stalks Sean because he blames Sean for the accidental death of Ralph's brother (even though Ralph caused the accident). These two scenarios make The Teacher bounce back and forth between teen sex romp and menace thriller. Loaded with cliches, including a critical father, a protective (bordering on incestuous) mother, gossiping townspeople, Ralph's death fixation (he drives a hearse and keeps his belonging in a casket) to show how weird he is, and Sean's naive reluctance to get involved with Diane (but once he does, he only seems to last about 15 seconds). Surprisingly downer ending.

April 8
8. The Tingler (1959) - From the introduction by William Castle, I thought that if anyone does a William Castle biopic, John Mahoney (of Frasier) would be ideal casting. Cheap and gimmicky are Castle's trademarks, but the blood red liquid coming from the bathroom sink and bathtub in the midst of a black and white film were unexpected.

April 10
9. Trip With the Teacher (1975) - Teacher and four teen girls' camping trip takes a wrong turn when their bus breaks down and they are at the mercy of a psychotic, nervously snickering biker and his brother. Another biker, decent good-guy Jay also gets caught up in the turmoil. The last scenes are kind of disturbing as the weekend filled with terror, rape, murder and defensive killings ends with the teacher and girls all smiles and laughs.

Goal: 60
Legend:
First Time Views *
Watched With Wife *
- March 31st -
1.)
Android (1982) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Super cheesy 80's Sci-Fi, sort of like Black Hole except with tits and Androids instead of Droids. It also stars the ever creepy Klaus Kinski and Charlie from the Critters franchise. I liked this movie but it dragged a bit too much for me to love it. An 80 minute move should not feel like a 2 hour one.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: Actor On Safe List: Klaus Kinski
2.)
Commentary For Android (1982) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I love it when a commentary is better than the actual movie. Highlights: Klaus Kinski is creepy in real life too, the director seeing Blade Runner the same year and thinking "What have I done?", Charlie (he will always be Charlie to me) talks about writing the movie, building parts of the set and working on Escape from New York.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: A rare Don Keith Opper commentary
3.)
Hidden Agenda (1999) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: So this was in one of those Echo Bridge Sci-Fi 4 packs. They changed this cover to make it look like a Minority Report rip off which sounded... interesting... Unfortunately, what it actually was was some lame 90's spy "thriller". There was a surprising amount of near name actors but everyone was really stiff, almost like we were watching a rehersal or something made for tv. It really makes me dread watching the other 3 gems Echo Bridge has waiting for me.
(2 out of 5)
Justification: Kevin Dillon trying to play Jason Bourn's brother
4.)
Tripping The Rift: The Movie (2008) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: So so bad. I was under the impression this show was for adults, seems to me it is more a show for preteens. Not once in this entire "comedy" did I even crack a smile. I will give it half a point for being colorful and having some nicely rendered girls but otherwise a complete waste of time.
(1.5 out of 5)
Justification: A SyFy original property
5.)
Emanuelle In Bangkok (1976) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: Laura Gemser is perhaps the perfect woman. And I loved every second of this sexy travelog. I wish life could be like this, traveling around, having sex with everyone, not sure if I would be down for the opium though... I am planning on going to Thailand here in the next decade or so and I hope my time is even half as fun as her montage was. I mean Cobra/Mongoose fights?!?! Thats awesome!
(4.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "A little weird and I'm not sure about what they want to say, freindship or love. I don't understand that FIN well. So many naked ladies guy must like this movie. (I) want to go to Bangkok to see my friend. I expected a little more but just many naked ladies and story-wise... there is no story just traveling and naked lady everywhere."
(3 out of 5)

Justification: A Black Emanuelle film
6.)
Caligula (1979) (Blu-Ray) **
My Thoughts: A hedonistic good time. To be fair I was a bit intoxicated during the viewing of this movie but I think that complimented the source material well. But had this movie been a cleaner less debaucherous affair I don't think I would have been quite as into it.
(3.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Choto very creepy, so many peepee to boob ne almost like porn, not history move ne. Almost like porn. I give 3 star I want to say 2.5 but they did choto creepy stuff ne?"
(3 out of 5)

Justification: It's not a porno, we swear!
- April 1st -
7.)
Foot Fist Way (2006) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: So, I don't really like those movies that try to make things really uncomfortably/awkward/squirmy. And that is pretty much exactly what this movie is. Danny McBride plays I man with an extreme social disorder that you really hate for more than half of the movie. But something happens toward the end of this experience and you actually start liking this guy. I might have liked this, but I can't quite be sure. Would have played a little better with some booze and some friends but it was an interesting ride.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: Low budget indie that was Danny McBrides breakout film
- April 2nd -
8.)
Document Of The Dead (1985) (DVD)
My Thoughts: I think I tried to watch this once when I originally got the DOTD Ultimate Edition but had watched so much content by the time that it just couldn't hold my interest and it almost couldn't this time either. More a documentary on all of Romero's work at the time than a Dawn of the Dead specific documentary. I really wish I had a copy of this back in 2003 as it would have really helped with a Romero term paper I wrote in high school, excellent over analyzation of some horror classics. Unfortunately because of that and compared to the more recent slew of horror docus, this one just doesn't holdup.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: Documentary on one of the best b-horror films ever
9.)
Commentary For Caligula (1979) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: About the best commentary you could possibly hope for. Malcolm McDowell has a wonderful presence is simply a pleasure to listen to throughout the entirety of the film. And he talks about everything you could want him to: the controversy, the shooting, his life/philosophy and even Helen Mirren's asshole.
(4.5 out of 5)
Justification: Malcolm McDowell commentates on his non-porno
10.)
Commentary For Foot Fist Way (2006) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A generally fun group of guys to listen to. Nothing too outstanding but it does play as a nice juxtaposition to an admittedly dark movie and there are some interesting insights into the shoot.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: An uncomfortable commentary?
11.)
Demonic Toys (1992) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Ahh, Full Moon... what can you say. This is perhaps one of the worst of the "good" Full Moon films. Completely ridiculous in ever aspect but that is part of the charm. What stuck out? Well Baby Oopsie was the obvious star of the toys (although, they should have gone with a different voice actor), that chick from the last few seasons of Babylon 5 was in it, and there was a naked girl at one point.
(3 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "My little boy... ok... Full Moon movie is always kind of creepy and ending I can guess so I going to give 2.5 star. I like bad baby."
(2.5 out of 5)

Justification: A Full Moon feature
12.)
Commentary For Document Of The Dead (1985) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A decent commentary. It probably helped that the director was also a film teacher. I didn't agree with some of his ideas but he was interesting throughout if a little bland. Also I learned a valuable lesson during this commentary, never invest in one of this guy's movies (With the exception of Street Trash).
(3 out of 5)
Justification: At one point during the director calls this movie the best documentary about independent movies ever made
- April 3rd -
13.)
The Green Inferno (1988) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Damn it! I was expecting a dark gore-filled tale of woe. This was an adventure in the Amazon movie! You would think an item often billed as Cannibal Holocaust 2 would have at least a little bite. But no, no raping/killing of indigenous South Americans and no debauchery prior to a slow painful cannibal death. What we do have is a group of scientist who go looking for a professor they catch monkeys, snakes, meet some cannibals and have a nice conversation with them and then fight slavers on a dash for Inca gold. And of course they learn a valuable lesson along the way. Sheesh. It was still kinda fun, just not what I was in the mood for.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: The film that ended the cannibal sub-genre
14.)
Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion (1996) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: Ah, I do miss Japan. The wife wasn't actively watching this with me but would from time to time make comments about things like pointing out places in the movie that were hit by the recent tsunami and saying that Stephen Seagal's daughter looked weird. Anyways, pretty good modern monster movie. I think I even liked it better than the first one. Looking forward to part 3.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: Japanese guys in rubber suits
- April 4th -
15.)
Ninjitsu (1958) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Wasn't really into the whole magical ninja thing. But it was interesting in that all Japanese movies I have seen from this time period were so deadly serious. This one has the aforementioned magic ninjas disappearing, teleporting, using ninja force powers, running/fighting on clouds. The movie is pretty light-hearted throughout until the bad guy is caught at the end and sentenced to be killed by boiling pot. They don't show it but yikes it it out of tone, even if historically accurate.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: Ninjaaaa
16.)
Fifty/Fifty (1992) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A perfect late eighties/early nineties action movie. Basically the plot of The Expendables except well, good. It has ever buddy action movie trope you can think of and it relishes in them, it's so good I would almost think it was a parody of them if it had been made at a later date. A small part of me wanted to go 5 out of 5 with this one but I still couldn't in good conscience put this movie on the same level as Star Wars.
(4.5 out of 5)
Justification: Buddy action flick with Petter Weller and Robert Hays
17.) - 18.)
Supernova (2005) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Well, color me surprised, this was not a bad movie! Think Deep Impact with no spaceship subplot. Bunch of B&D level actors doing a decent job in a 'what if the world was going to be cooked' movie. The effects are pretty bad but they make up for that by having a lot of them and with liberal use of b-roll. I was actually quite entertained with this one, the whole "Oh I made a calculation error, we are going to be fine" bit was a little lame. And Hallmark just couldn't resist a woman overcoming her traumatized past subplot but yeah give it a go, if it's on. EDIT: This movie was written by the star of Android!
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: A Halmark original film
19.)
The Phantom (1996) (Blu-Ray) **
My Thoughts: I remember when this and the Shadow came out and thinking to myself that the audience for these properties were already dead. Also I was in some sort of focus group when I was a kid and the trailer to the Phantom was something I gave my opinion on. Something which I believe boiled down to downplay the magic skulls in the trailer. Anyway, the movie is passable. Not quite as good as I remember as a kid, very cliched but it had it's moments. Unfortunately there is just something about Billy that makes him a bit odd as a leading man.
(3 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "It is pretty good actually, I did not expect that much. Demo choto time frame ga too much skipping ne. I want to go island ne. It's cute I like white horse. Did not have that much deep story in it. Billy Zane is ok, but I did not like his eyes. But he did ok this time."
(3 out of 5)

Justification: A Billy Zane superhero movie
- April 5th -
20.)
The Last Gun (1964) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: Plays a bit run of the mill western at first but settles into it's spaghettiness nicely. Guitar is the obvious star of this one, think a happy Blondie. And he falls for this very very Italian saloon girl. Bandits, gunplay & gold, it's all you really need out of a good western.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: I could go for some Italian
21.)
Robo Vampire (1988) (DVD)
My Thoughts: More like Weird Hopping Mystical Kung-Fu Chinese Zombies vs a Horrible Chinese Robocop Knockoff. Before you get too excited no, it does not live up to the cover art, not even close. I remember being really bummed the first time seeing this, but I went in this time with no preconception and had a decent time. Robo Vampire really rides the line between 'so bad it's good' and just 'bad bad'. Horrible dubbing, nonsensical plot, awful awful effects but there is some fun here to be had, I wonder if there was ever a MST3K or RiffTrax on this title...
(3 out of 5)
Justification: Never was a film more made for this challenge
- April 6th -
22.)
Black Dynamite (2009) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A fantastic sendup to the Blaxploitation genre. It took me a little while to really get into it or for the alcohol to kick in, either way once I was in it was awesome. While wondering why this kind of film hadn't been done more often I thought of Undercover brother. While somewhat similar the hard R really lends it's self to this genre very effectively. I only wish there had been a little more nudity.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: For the longest time I called it blacksplotation
23.)
Commentary For Black Dynamite (2009) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A fun commentary by an interesting bunch of guys. I enjoyed hearing where all the references came from, and have added a few titles to my 'to buy' list because of it. Worth a listen if you liked the film.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: There needs to be more commentaries on blaxploitation movies.
24.)
Mesmerized (1986) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: Fucking creepy. The first half of the movie John Lithgow offscreen rapes Jodi Foster and on screen mentally rapes her, then the second half of the movie Jodi Foster slowly poisons him to death. I kinda dug it, but I could have used a bit more explicitness, it would have helped me root for Jodi a bit more in the second half of the movie.
(3 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Demo choto poor old guy ne? Pretty good actually. Demo lady wa kowai ne. Demo that guy creepy. But I don't understand why she don't like that guy that much, because creepy?" (Then she threatened to poison me)
(4 out of 5)

Justification: Is Jodi Foster subject to John Lithgow's strange sexual proclivities
- April 7th -
25.)
Ninja Hunt (1964) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Surprisingly awesome and easily the best ninja flick I have ever seen (in a Seven Samurai sort of way, not in a B-Movie challenge sort of way). Also really dark for an earlier Japanese film, the paranoia in this is almost palpable. There is one point where a Ronin kills 5 people just because he suspects 1 is an accomplice of the Ninja. Also we have some extreme ninjaness without being cooky or completely unrealistic (except for the Needle Spitting eyeball piercing trick). I must speak to this release though: It's Letterboxed!?! That is all.
(4.5 out of 5)
Justification: Came in a ninja 10 pack
26.)
Dollman (1991) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: Tim Thomerson brings the bad assery, as always. But man I would have just loved to see him playing the bad ass space cop he was in the the first 10 minutes of the movie (on his dystopian planet). I think that would have been a much better project than this fish out of water story. But I can see why they did it. And there was still quite a lot of awesome with Dollman in the Brox
(4 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Pretty good demo choto too violento. Demo ending not that great. Puppet master movie, not Puppet Master... Full Moon movie thay should spend a little more and do something different, cause can kind of guess what is going to happen. Either blow everyone off or die everyone. They need to spend little more time. Also their movie most under 2 hours so they cannot keep up good story. If ending good I am going to give 4 point."
(3.5 out of 5)

Justification: I like the Japanese title better: MicroCop
27.)
RoboGeisha (2009) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: This one really straddles the line between crazy fun and wtf for wtf's sake. And I went back and forth between liking it and not wanting to be belittled by it. Overall I align slightly towards like, but don't go in expecting a Takeshi Miike level of wtf, but something a little more contrived.
(3 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Story wa choto extreamly silly like ass shuriken and katana from butt, choto hen. Dem sister story good ne. Hope people think Japanes not creepy like that. So far good but too silly but ending was very good, good sister relationship."
(3.5 out of 5)

Justification: Did you catch the title of the film?
- April 8th -
28.)
Sister Emanuelle (1977) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: A cinema classic. I didn't quite like this one as much as Emanuelle in Bangkok but it deliver on the exploitation. It focuses more on a side character than Emanuelle herself which in my opinion is it's comparative downfall. Also not near enough girl on girl. All that being said, it was still an Emanuelle movie.
(4 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Thats good movie, that lady reminds me of my friend. Demo that lady that actress always want to be nudity seems like. Not bad 4 star I like that ending. Dirty, dirty, dirty whore."
(4 out of 5)

Justification: A Black Emanuelle nunsploitation flick
29.)
Red Planet (2000) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: I always get this and Mission to Mars mixed up in my head, the other Mars movie that came out that year. With that in mind I expected something amazing to happen towards the end and it kind of pittered out like Apollo 18. In fact this was strikingly similar to Apollo 18, sans killer robot. It was decent but just.
(3 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Good good I like that ending demo middle choto slow. I give them 4 star, 4 star scifi movie. That guy, he cheated, he is always that kind of guy he is weak or betrayed (you don't even know who that is) I know, I know I know 2 more movies." (After a trip to imdb, she was right (for once))
(4 out of 5)

Justification: 14% tomatometer rating
- April 9th -
30.)
Lifepod (1993) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A decent 10 little indians who done it. Several people escape a sabotaged ship in a lifepod but could the saboteur be among them? And then people start dying so yeah they probably are. It's a bit paint by numbers on the survivors of a disaster waiting to be rescued but there are quite a few interesting scifi elements here. I particularly enjoyed the Tool-e, the mechanically enhanced tool-equipped human (A midget who cut off his arm and had a robotic replacement installed). Decent but I will be in no rush to see it again.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: A Hitchcock remake, in space
31.)
JCVD (2008) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: I have never really got this whole collective notion of Van Damme as a bad actor. I think he is a pretty good actor, he's just in bad movies. That being said I wasn't amazed by his acting in this like so many others were, it was just JC being JC at an extremely meta level. I liked it but prefer his more genrey entries.
(3.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "I wondering is that true story or not? Seems very real. It's good story. Demo his imagination and real story is kind of mixed. Sometimes hard to tell. Cause back and forth times. And we don't see Jean Claude Van Damme lately. so I wondering if he was really arrested?"
(4 out of 5)

Justification: Stars actor on safe list: Jean Claude Van Damme
- April 10th -
32.)
4 Dollars Of Revenge (1968) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: Another run of the mill but slightly above average spaghetti western. We have a man betrayed who must breakout of prison and extract justice. I liked this movie but there was this song, the only song, and they would play it again and again and again and it really almost killed the movie for me. Especially when it didn't even remotely match what was happening on screen. It brought the movie down from slightly above average to just above below average, if that makes any sense.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: My fist could hold a a few more than 4 dollars
33.)
The Purple Hood Ninja (1958) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Sort of like the Ninja version of Robin Hood. Some good sword play but otherwise this movie struck me as fairly ordinary. Except maybe for the color purple? It was interesting that at no time during the movie did anyone say 'ninja' and that a more appropriate translation for the title of the film is The Purple Hooded Man.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: I don't know if I would have chose the color purple, it really didn't work out well for the Foot Clan
34.)
King Of Texas (2002) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I liked this one, Patrick Stewart always does a good job of playing a demented old man. I am also a fan of Shakespeare interpretations, this one got me itching to watch Throne of Blood again. Oh and Cheif O'Brien is in it too.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: Patrick Stewart doing Shakespeare in old west Texas
35.)
Dream To Believe (1986) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: 80's-tastic! This movie hits maybe every 80's teen cliche you could think of: talented unpopular girl realizing she can do it, inspirational speeches, multiple training montages/dance montages, gymnastics street competitions, eating disorders, abusive parents, death of a parent, coming to an understanding with step-siblings, non-threating/dancing minority characters, everything! (Run 80's black guys, your no match for the 90's black guys!). I had a cheesy good time with this one and you get to see a few hints of Bill and Ted here and there.
(4 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Almost like footloose. Keanu cute. Very good story. Step dad suck ne? The friend, I like the friend and I like Keanu too. Where is the rich guy? He just came later just a little bit. Where is Yamata, Yamada only little bit I was expecting Yamada."
(4.5 out of 5)

Justification: Before they were famous: Keanu Reeves circa 1986
- April 11th -
36.)
Lost Boys: The Thirst (2010) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: The alternate endings for the second one really got my hopes up for how this might be but no. Too bad that the other Corey was too busy, this could have been his send off picture. So we got Feldman, and while I wasn't really on board with his performance in the 2nd film this time they made him the main character and it sort of worked. I enjoyed this movie, not too much and probably only because of it's relation to the '87 classic, but I enjoyed it.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: Could have been some great Coreysplotation

37.)
Red Eagle (1970) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Well this collection saved the 'worst' for last. This 70's Thai action hero movie is letter-boxed, made from a negative that is scratched to shit, and has easily the most misspellings I have ever seen in a subtitled movie. But I have got to say this was also my favorite of the 4 in this set. A Thai crime family is using the costume of the now retired superhero cop Red Eagle to commit crimes. So the real Red Eagle changes his costume to the Golden Eagle and comes out of retirement to lay some Thai smackdown. Interestingly the main actor died while preforming the last stunt of the movie.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: Thai superhero?
38.)
BaadAsssss Cinema (2002) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Finally getting around to watching my prize from last years B-Movie challenge and it was a decent docu outing. First off, picture-boxxed arrrrg! Like with all good genre documentaries it added a few films to my to watch list and it hits several of the major stars like Fred Williamson, Pam Greir and genre aficionado Quentin Tarantino. I would have liked to seen a bit more actors and a wider berth of the genre and honestly more QT but it was decent.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: Got to love a documentary that shows nudity
39.)
Dollman Vs. Demonic Toys (1993) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: I love the idea for this film, bringing together these properties but this whole picture just feels like a missed opportunity. There are way too many clips from previous movies, the effects are bad/recycled, and what little plot there was was stretched thin and really only half a movie's worth at best. This could have been cut down to 30-40 minutes easy and then combined with say another Dollman outing or 2 other stories and been something like Cat's Eye and it might have been decent. But unfortunately the Videozone was the best part of this one.
(2 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "I don't care about it. Full moon movie always if they keep making the story or movies; 1 it's ok, second one pft. They should make something better just a creepy. Making like Halloween or Friday the 13th or something scary like that, this is just bull shit. Disappointed. I get sleepy means movie no good."
(2.5 out of 5)

Justification: Directed by the man himself; Charles Band
40.)
The Black Hole (2006) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Maybe it's because I just watched Dollman vs. Demonic Toys, but this wasn't so bad. I mean yeah it was bad but for a Sci-Fi movie, not bad. The premiss is that they build the Large Hadron Collider in St. Lewis, create a black hole and an energy being comes out of it while the black hole sucks up the city. Actually now that I am writing this it was a below par feature. Also Kristy Swanson apparently received botox the minute before she stepped infront of the camera for this one and as such has this wooden expressionless face throughout the picture.
(2.5 out of 5)
Justification: Another 14%er on Rotten Tomatoes
- April 12th -
41.)
Getting Straight (1970) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: An interesting slice of slice of life, think activist early 70's college campus. But man, way way too much uppity hippy crap, really just made me want to crack some skulls. Around the middle of the movie there was this amazing black girl, what they should have done is keep her and made it that kind of social commentary. It did hold my interest just not quite the movie I was expecting to watch.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: Contains a druggie Harrison Ford
42.)
Purple Hood Ninja 2 (1982) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: This one is labeled on the set as Reed Hood Ninja 2 but it is actually a remake of the first movie. And without doing any research, it appears to be a television remake as there are into/outro stings for commercials and there is a channel logo perpetually in the lower right hand corner. The plot is a bit simplified and there is more humor but otherwise is is pretty much scene for scene, word for word. That being said I liked the original better. A positive though, this film was fullscreen instead of picture boxed! give me hope for the rest of the set.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: A sequel, a remake, a sequel, a remake, it's a sequel and a remake! *Does not apply to this remake
- April 13th -
43.)
Assault Of The Party Nerds (1989) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: It could have been the alcohol but I really really liked this movie. Bad acting, plot, filmstock & dialog aside it was just fun. Now this also could be due in no small part to Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer, two of my favorite scream queens. I am actually quite looking forward to the sequel, also included in this set. Some great nudity here btw.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: Features Linnea Quigley, need I say more?
44.)
Commentary For Assault Of The Party Nerds (1989) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A good commentary with some interesting insights into the making of the film. Again it always seems like low budget films lead to better commentaries. There was a slight audio level problem with this track though, the picture was playing a bit too loud and it sounded like they were shouting over it. And what a missed opportunity for one of the female cast members to join the track. But still a recommendable track for those who liked the movie and can bear the audio issues.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: Also Features the lovely Michelle Bauer
45.)
Star Knight (1985) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Ah finally, this one was worth the cost of the set all by it's self. A humanoid alien (very Man Who Fell To Earth-ish) comes to medieval earth, falls in love with a princess and befriends a local medicine man/wizard. Super cheesy and right up my alley. My biggest complaint would be that Harvey Keitel's character is mainly played for laughs where I think going serious would have benefitted this movie. Also come on Echo Bridge, give Klaus a box credit, his interplay/antagonizing relationship with the local religious leader is easily one of the best parts of the movie.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: And another appearance by safelist actor Klaus Kinski out of nowhere!
46.)
Back To The Beach (1987) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: This one came free with Brain Candy and looked like it might be an interesting fit for the challenge so I held onto it until now. It's basically 60's Beach/Surf movie stars all grown up and living in the 80's. Plot arc/overacting wise it really feels more like a TV movie as opposed to a general release one also there is a cameo/guest star about every 5-10 minutes. It was colorful and it held my interest, nothing really amazing here though.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: A beach party film, apparently
47.)
Live Wire (1992) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: A surprisingly good action movie. Liquid explosives and troubled cops seem to always make for a good action movie. I can't think of a single 'straight' recent action movie that I have liked this much. Perhaps I am falling out of touch or maybe they just don't make em like they used to. (9 hours elapsed since I wrote the previous) Maybe I just don't seek out straight action movies anymore, I mean I probably wouldn't have even seen this if not for a Big Lots $3 blind buy. I do prefer a more genre oriented action film but after seeing this I am sure something has been made in the last 10 years that as good or better than this. I need to branch out a bit more...
(4.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Cute ending. Very good movie. So that senator is bad guy ne? Very realistic, last ending same lady (could not understand). Demo is that possible? Nuclear bomb, not nuclear just drink and exploded, maybe choto unbelievable. Banzai Big Lots. "
(4.5 out of 5)

Justification: Pierce Brosnan fights a terrorist that is using humans as bombs
- April 14th -
48.)
17 Ninjas (1963) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A quality note: picture boxed and there is an annoying hum every time a subtitle is on screen. Otherwise this is a really good movie, instead of being just one side of the ninja/castle assault we get both sides here and it is fascinating. The castle has hired their own ninja to help organize against the assault. And the movie plays a little like a reverse Seven Samurai. A drawn out game of chess, played with real people. I can easily recommend this set if only for this and Ninja Hunt (with the one caveat being pq quality).
(4 out of 5)
Justification: More ninsanity
49.)
A Man Called Horse (1970) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: An Englishman gets captured by Indians and must adapt if he is to survive. Kind of like a rougher Dances With Wolves. I believe epic is an applicable description of this movie. Being from Oklahoma, Indian stuff kind of bores me at this point but I found this movie captivating. The isolationism, the desperation is... I feel like I have been using the word palpable too much but yeah, palpable. The movie is quite beautiful too, kind or reminds me of Ford sans monument valley. Although I would have liked to see him get back to civilization, kind of defeatist of the point of the movie but it would have been nice. Also some special features would have been nice, a historian commentary perhaps.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: A horse of a different color
50.)
T-Force (1994) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I kind of dug this one. The acting was bad, the effects were bad, the dubbing was bad but the plot was solid. Now that could have been just because the whole movie was just one big rip-off; Die Hard, Terminator, Blade Runner, Universal Solider with some hard ass 80's cop stereotype thrown in. But I think if you are in the mood for some cheese this one delivers, just don't expect it to impress.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: Finish cyborg cops
51.)
Holy Mountain (1973) (Blu-Ray) **
My Thoughts: I had to look back at the review I wrote for the last Jodorowsky movie I saw just to see what I wrote. I said "a long string of WTFs held together by a WTF plot... visually a very captivating movie", very poignant. That basically covers this outing as well, just remove the plot. Sure this movie has one but it is way less than coherent, I'm sure a film class would read all sorts of stuff into it but for the average viewer it's just not their. It was almost like watching a dream which could be a good thing depending on what you are in the mood for. I enjoyed it but I am not sure why.
(3.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Creepy, strange weird, I don't understand what they want to say. I don't know the point. I really don't know what that director want to say it's just creepy, thats it. I want to get budda gun."
(2.5 out of 5)

Justification: Directed by safe list director and king of WTF; Alejandro Jodorowsky
- April 15th -
52.)
An American Carol (2008) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: On the complete other end of the spectrum compared to Getting Straight. And just like that movie the preachiness of this one is pretty overpowering as well (yes I hate both sides). The actors were all decent and you get the slap-stickiness of A Zucker parody but a republican comedy? It just played as stupid. Not as bad as I would have thought but not something I ever need to see again. Also Chris Farley's brother really reminded me of him, almost to the point where I thought he might be doing an impersonation of him.
(2.5 out of 5)
Justification: So far the lowest tomatometer ranked viewing of the challenge.
53.)
Defendor (2009) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Came in with no expectations and was blown away. I would easily put this above Kick Ass, and I loved Kick Ass. Woody was great, he skirted full retard a bit but it worked. This is just one of those movies that makes you feel good, gets a bit hokey here and there but easily my top viewing of the challenge.
(5 out of 5)
Justification: Woody Harrelson plays a special needs vigilante superhero!
- April 16th -
54.)
Commentary For Defendor (2009) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I believe on a previous challenge I lamented the fact that Zombieland did not have a Woody Harrelson commentary and after listening to this one I find that was completely justified complaint. Here we have the director and the two main leads and it's really just a pleasure to sit in on them having such a good time. Kat is irresistibly cute, Woody is great and the director is not annoying. Stories about Sandra Oh being pissed at Woody, fat ladies giving Kat in hooker gear the stink eye, robberies and crazies they had to deal with on locations. Great track.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: Insert snappy comment here
55.)
Emanuelle Around The World (1977) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: Laura Gemser is radiant as always. But I wan't quite as impressed with this outing. Plenty of sex and some great scenics but the other girls just seem a bit subpar when compared to previous entries and the homeless/dog rapes didn't really do it for me. I guess it was also a bit too dark for what I was in the mood for/not dark enough to play in a different light if that makes any sense. I hope that Emanuelle in Bangkok wasn't the best of the series, that would be a bit of a downer since it was the first one I watched.
(3.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Strange. I understand she is journalist, but does she really do journalist job. seems like ending was kind of weird, then that lady get raped and done. I was wondering that story connected to previous one. I'm kind of getting tired same pattern just sleep around. 1st maybe I enjoyed but second 3rd same, so what?"
(2.5 out of 5)

Justification: Another Laura Gemser classic
- April 17th -
56.)
Assault Of The Party Nerds 2: The Heavy Petting Detective (1995) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: All of the important main characters of the first movie are back this time around and yes that does include the breasts of both Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer (the latter having held up better than the former in the 5 years since the first film). Easily as bad a film as the first but this time it just didn't quite work for me on the same level. It was entertaining enough but there were a bit too many retreads and a bit to much of Gabai playing to the camera. But hey it did have one of the actors from T-Force in it.
(2.5 out of 5)
Justification: On the tomatometer threshhold
57.)
Commentary For Assault Of The Party Nerds 2: The Heavy Petting Detective (1995) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Well, it answers a lot of questions about the movie, like why was this made? For USA Up All Night, of course. I wonder if they still have that, although now it would probably be all 90's movies now... Anyway, a few interesting insights but the source material just isn't good enough to float this track over average.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: Richard Gabai deserves a place on the safelist IMO.
- April 18th -
58.)
Raise The Titanic (1980) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Made before they found the actual wreckage, the first half of the movie has a pretty good hook, very B but still interesting. The government needs a special element and yes the only place it can be found is in the cargo hold of the Titanic. The ship they use is not quite so grand as the one it is impersonating and the interestingness of the movie, surprisingly, kind of peters out once they find the Titanic. It reminds me of the feeling I had while watching The Final Countdown, but this one delivers quite a bit more.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: And I thought Ghostbusters II was the only movie to have the Titanic arriving in New York.
59.)
The New Centurions (1972) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I love these 70's cop movies, real, gritty, friendly prostitutes. Wasn't as much a fan of the second half downward spiral but the first half with George C Scott was great. And Keach is always likable. Also there is something more romantic about being a cop before tasers an dashcams.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: I love these Martini Movies
- April 19th -
60.)
The Mechanic (1972) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: This movie surprised me, I just wasn't expecting anything this good or Charles Bronson to be an assassin. There is some weird 70's stuff here and some homoerotic undertones but otherwise a really solid action movie. Lesson to be taken away: killing an assassin is hard.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: Staring safe list actor Charles Bronson
- April 20th -
61.)
Man Friday (1975) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I have not been able to get this movie out of my head, it's just so dark and twisted. You don't really see it at first because it is peppered with some comedy, good times and even a few songs, but fuck! In this version of Robinson Crusoe: Crusoe has gone a bit mad all alone on the island and when he finds faithful manservant Friday he proceeds to really just treat him horribly. But while you are watching it no specific instance seems so bad compared to how everyone was just getting along so well. It's hard to describe and one of those movies you will think about for a long time.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: Robinson Crusoe and his tenuous slave/not a slave relationship with man servent Friday
62.)
Aberration (1997) (Internet) **
My Thoughts: Lizards with teeth. This is just a bunch of B-movie fun. Puppets, bad acting, Coreman-esk plot & effects. I mean don't get me wrong it is a bad movie. But in the right mood it's a fun one.
(3.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Good, it was great in the beginning but ending was eh it's too strange and creepy. De Frankie died so sad. But they need to change ending choto outrageous. Drop to 3 because of the ending."
(3 out of 5)

Justification: My first Ozploitation of the challenge
- April 21st -
63.)
Cabin In The Woods (2012) (Theater) **
My Thoughts: I knew all those years of watching "bad" horror movies were leading to something! I just loved loved loved this movie. A great send up to all those 80's-90's horror movie and required viewing for any fan of the genre.
(4.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Beginning is great, I love that. So they are some people are recording their reality life, no? So like making a movie like but those people don't know. Like truman show. Do you agree with me? It was funny, hooker, virgin, sports something... (What did you think about the Japanese part?) They try to do we do that kind of game but choto twisted. I like until middle."
(3 out of 5)

Justification: OK'd by the man
- April 23rd -
64.)
Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (1988) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: The personification of bad 80's horror movies. 3 scream queens, sorority girls, trapped in a mall, puppets, bad acting, bad plot, it's just cheesy cheesy goodness. I have always liked this one with a few caveats: there is a little dragging in the 3rd act, Bride Of Frankenstein & Linnea Quigley is entirely clothed the whole movie!
(4 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "I thought could be a gross but neh it's not so gross. Just so many similar movie like that it's not any trick ne? It's like other movie I forgot the title but they have that creature. It's not super special or anything so choto disappoint. So many similar one. I can give only 3 star."
(3 out of 5)

Justification: Staring safe list actors: Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley & my suggestion for next years safe list; Michelle Bauer
65.)
Stroker Ace (1983) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Arg, now I have 2 Nascar movies in my collection, how did this happen? Well at least they are both comedies. So this one was fun, Burt Reynolds is playing almost the same character he played in The Cannonball Run movies (maybe classic Reynolds?), a swarthy ladies-man with a need for speed. This time he is a Nascar driver trying to get out of his contact is a variety of madcap ways. A little tame but enjoyable early 80's comedy fare. Winner of several Razzies but I guess such things taper with time.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: Carsploitation
66.)
Into The Blue 2: The Reef (2009) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: The first Into The Blue was all about beautiful people in swimwear, and considering Jessica Alba was in the first movie there is not much room for improvement there. This movie was essentially the same thing, they tried to amp it up by adding some boobs and making the "salvage" a bit edgier but it didn't really make it that much more interesting. I like to think of this one as the poor mans Fools Gold.
(3 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Pretty good, I like it. Story ga ii ne, it's connecting, great. I want to live Hawaii. Live close to the ocean seems fun. I'm going to give them 4 star. Demo that poor lady."
(4 out of 5)

Justification:A Tomatometer qualifier
- April 24th -
67.)
Messenger Of Death (1988) (DVD)*
My Thoughts: This is the kind of movie that my grandfather might watch on tv. And maybe I am getting old but I enjoyed it. Bronson is getting a bit old here but he still has a little kick ass in him, this time as an investigative reporter trying to get to the bottom of some Mormon murders. A bit tame compared to the last Bronson affair but enjoyable none the less.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: Another from safe list actor Charles Bronson
68.)
Assassination (1987) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I liked this one. Bronson as secret service protecting a very annoying first lady. The cute chinese agent that is always after him to marry her was great. The buddy film dynamic is always fun and really any action movie that has rocket launcher play is going to be a step above the rest. Although the film could have really benefitted if they had gone for the R rating.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: Charles Bronson deals out more justice.
- April 25th -
69.)
Goin' South (1978) (DVD)*
My Thoughts: Hey, it's like Clara Clayton's first marriage! Lots of stars in this one and it is a pretty serviceable movie. Interesting hook and often humorous but overall it was just average and if you are going to do a western comedy it needs to be good or it just doesn't reach a wider audience. Jim Belushi and Christopher LLoyd as the bumbling deputies was cool. Otherwise, it was entertaining but nothing astounding.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: A western comedy
- April 26th -
70.)
Druids (2001) (DVD)*
My Thoughts: Boring Braveheart ripoff, just replace Scots with Druids and English with Romans. There were a few bright parts to this one like all the naked European girls as a trap/distraction for the romans and Lamber's voice but otherwise I just couldn't get into this one.
(2 out of 5)
Justification: Might barely qualify as Eschploitation
71.)
MST3K: San Francisco International (1970) (Internet)*
My Thoughts: Thanks to KaBluie for posting a link to this one. A classic Mike episode, makes me sad I never jumped on the releases when I had the chance. And while not technically part of the episode I really enjoyed the little snippets of old commercials/comedy central into/outros. I really miss classic Comedy Central back when they ran Benny Hill, MST3K and their TnA Matinee. An excellently corny movie about various airport dramas really lends it's self to this riffing. My advice, follow KaBluie's link above and give it a listen.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: MST3K always counts

72.)
SNL: The Best Of Tom Hanks (2004) (DVD) (WildCard #1)
My Thoughts: So I needed a bit of a break. Big Tom Hanks fan but I have just seen these sketches too much. It's Comedy Central's fault with that 90's-00's SNL phase they went through.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: Wildcard bitches!
- April 27th -
73.)
MST3K: Time Of The Apes (1987) (Internet)*
My Thoughts: I've always liked Mike better but listening to this one Joel rocked it. I guess I just like Mikes face better but in the dark Joel knows what he is doing... I mean... Anyway this movie was awesome! Japanese Planet of the Apes rippoff! This is something I wouldn't mind watching even without a riff track. The effects were bad the plot was ridiculous and the horrible dubbing really lent to the MST3K experience. Easily one of the best MST3K I have ever seen.
(4.5 out of 5)
Justification: I wonder what Joel is doing now...
74.)
Circle Of Iron (1978) (Blu-Ray)*
My Thoughts: Interesting quest movie, doesn't quite deliver in the way that something like Conan does but it's fun. Carradine really shines here but you really have to wonder what could have been if Bruce Lee had actually been in it.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: Staring auto erotic asphyxiation victim & safe list actor; David Carradine
- April 28th -
75.)
Let Me In (2010) (Blu-Ray) (WildCard #2)**
My Thoughts: I have seen a lot of vampire movies and I can say without a shadow of the v.. of a doubt that this is the best vampire movie I have ever seen. I felt the previous to be a little extreme too so I went to flickchart and yes, still the best. The isolation of the main character is palpable, the killings are brutal and even knowing what she is you can't help but really like Cloe. The original was on my to buy list above this one but black friday prices made this one a must buy and I am so glad I did.
(5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Very good. I give 5 star. 5 star scary movie. Demo where they going to go? Let Me In. Thats a good thats a good ne? I thought that guy was very creepy first but it isn't ne? She want to drink the blood, demo ending I like it those mean kids. I like Owen better cause that girl, that face is very distinguish. I always think oh Kick Ass, oh Kick Ass , she did a good job but her image is too previous movie."
(5 out of 5)

Justification: The wife was starting to get leery of my movie choices, I needed something to get her back on track.
76.)
The Pit & The Pendulum (1991) (DVD)*
My Thoughts: One of the best Full Moon movies. I remember seeing this as a child and the scene where to woman eats gun powder right before she is burnt to death has always stuck with me. Something I perpetually think about whenever I see another steak burning scene. Also I remember the nudity quite fondly as well. You can see the limitations of the budget here and there but Full Moons take on the Spanish inquisition is otherwise a feather in their cap.
(4 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "(As the movie is starting) Ah Full Moon desu ka?!? Ah low expectation. (After film) Very good, I did not expect that good Full Moon movie. I'm sorry Full Moon I under estimate you. Thats pretty good full moon movie. I think #2 full moon movie I ever see. Full moon should make not creepy movie all the time, that is historical type of movie that is better."
(4 out of 5)

Justification: Stars safe-list superstar Jeffrey Combs
77.)
The Pursuit Of Happiness (1971) (DVD)*
My Thoughts: Hippies. Some hippie accidentally runs over an old woman and then proceeds to make matters worse and worse when he repeatedly refuses to follow sound advice. You really just can't feel sorry for this guy, he is such an idiot. But at least he wasn't as bad as the guy in Getting Straight and the movie was entertaining but hey were are my Martini Minutes?
(3 out of 5)
Justification: Another martini movie, this specific disc was actually returned by another member of the forum!
78.)
Into The Sun (2005) (DVD)**
My Thoughts: So I thought I wasn't really going to like this, especially with that CSI surveillance camera zoom in at the beginning. But it wasn't that bad, in fact I would even go so far as to say it was entertaining. Steven Seagal looks weird in every scene he is in but it was fun to watch him mop up the asian underworld. Also being in Japan it did make me a bit nostalgic.
(3.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Um thats ok but most of scene is unrealistic like shooting the gun or using the sword. But we see some scenic we already seen or knew the place so I can give 3.5. People will misunderstand Japan we don't use guns so easy. And yakuza not popular anymore we have a little bit but not anymore. You have to study little more japanese talk like Stephen Seagal."
(3.5 out of 5)

Justification: A Steven Seagal outing
- April 29th -
79.)
Redneck Zombies (1989) (DVD)
My Thoughts: I told myself I would never watch this again. The acting is horrible, the plot is retarded and it is easily the worst movie I have seen over the course of the challenge. I remembered being sickened by this movie when I saw it as a kid, I had never seen ultra-gore like this before or bad acting quite to this caliber also it was a Troma vhs which meant constant re-tracking. I am giving it half a point just for not being boring but it is still truely an awful awful movie. Troll II is a jewel in comparison.
(1.5 out of 5)
Justification: Troma, oh god Troma
80.)
She Shoulda Said No! (1949) (Internet)*
My Thoughts: Ah, good point, no drugs for me. On a side note, having had a few druggie friends I have never seen any of them as active as the poor retches in this movie. I liked it and defiantly exploitative. My sister is selling pot to put me through college? Thats it I am going to hang myself in the garage to teach her a lesson. And I liked how all the drug dealers looked like G-Men. But it was a little boring so that brings down the score a bit.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: 30s-40s "Cautionary" film
81.)
Dickie Roberts Former Child Star (2003) (DVD)*
My Thoughts: This movie wasn't bad but it is pretty easy to see why it didn't so do very well. It basically plays like a kids movie with a plot that only people over 40 would like. Entertaining and I have always enjoyed David Spade but this movie could have been awesome if they had gone dark with it.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: Close enough
- April 30th -
82.)
Commentary For Dickie Roberts Former Child Star (2003) (DVD)*
My Thoughts: Dickie writer and David Spade were pretty funny here. Poking holes in the movie and talking about how hot the underage actors were. I wonder why his talk show never took off. Regardless this commentary track was better than the movie proper. It's actually kind of surprising that a film like Dickie Roberts has 2 commentary tracks...
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: Making a comedy in the 90's & want no one to see it? Hire David Spade
83.)
The Incredibly Strange Creatures... (1964) (Internet)*
My Thoughts: ...Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!? Great title and decent poster but the film does not deliver. No zombies more like acid mutilated former hypno-assasins who's minds were wiped. And it really doesn't deliver on that either. Mostly a waste of time, something interesting could be edited down to about 30 minutes but otherwise I felt like this one was just wasting my time.
(2 out of 5)
Justification: Suffering through a MST3K pick without the guys for checklist sake.
84.)
Little Caesar (1931) (Internet)*
My Thoughts: Decided to watch this one after it was so prominently featured in BaadAsssss Cinema. And I was surprised how good it was. The main character has such a weird face and talks like a parody of 30's gangsters or perhaps the parodies are based on him... Either way it a refreshing change of pace and something I might like seeing dissected one day.
(4 out of 5)
Justification: A check for Hollywood Gangster film (Film Noir era)
85.)
Shrunken Heads (1994) (DVD)*
My Thoughts: I remember really not liking this when I was younger, the kids die and the shrunken head nuzzling boobs was and still is really creepy. But it played better this time. Interesting, cheesy, weird, backlot movie. I always find these R-Rated horror films for kids to be a bit peculiar from a marketing stand point. Decent but this era in film marks the beginning of the end of the watchable Full Moon movie.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: More Full Moon madness
86.)
MST3K: Secret Agent Super Dragon (1966) (Internet)*
My Thoughts: Well unfortunately a boring movie this time made for a meh MST3K. The bits between the riff were the best part of this one; ♫Secret Agent.....Super Dragon♫
(3 out of 5)
Justification: MST3K's take on Eurospy madness
87.)
Evil Bong 3-D (2010) (DVD)**
My Thoughts: Well I feel I must apologize to Redneck Zombies, you are not longer the worst film of the challenge. Fuck this was bad. If this film wasn't personally responsible for putting a $2600 profit in my pocket it might very easily have been the first non-duplicate DVD I would have gotten rid of. The 3-D was bad, the plot was stupid and there is only about 3 sets in the entire "feature". This movie gets half a point for having boobs, a scratch and sniff card and of course for the money.
(1.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: "Looks really low budget movie. Only 3 different scenes story almost does not makes sense. And I guess people who smoke marijuana enjoy this movie. But I do not understand. Demo you get the money, thats good. 2.5 I give 2.5 because scent card and your name on the list otherwise 1.5 those crappy glasses."
(2.5 out of 5)

Justification: My name is in the credits, so it can't be that good.
88.)
Hero of Swallow (1966) (DVD)*
My Thoughts: A Chinese ninja movie . Your typical ninja fare except with an obscene amount of air-walking, however, it just wasn't quite up to it's Japanese counterparts. There are some actual Japanese ninja sub-villans here and I think the story would have benefited my just going ahead and making them the main big bads. Serviceable.
(3 out of 5)
Justification: I had a girlfriend once that... nevermind.
89.)
Mad Men S01E01 (2007) (Blu-Ray) (WildCard #3)*
My Thoughts: Well, I had 1 more wildcard so I thought I would burn it on something that could be applied to next months challenge. I was resistant to this based on previews and a review TRS did a long time ago but I got to say I liked it. Wither or not I will end up loving it could be a different story though.
(3.5 out of 5)
Justification: Here is a link next months Mad Men & Wife's 'To Watch' Pile Challenge
