Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Season 1 01/24/12

Taken from: TVShowsOnDVD.com

Today Universal announced that on January 24th they will release Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Season 1, a collection of JUST the original Earth-based season with Dr. Huer, Dr. Theopolis. It also includes a galaxy of guest stars that include Pamela Hensley, Henry Silva, Roddy McDowall, Buster Crabbe, Jack Palance, Tim Robbins, Cesar Romero, Frank Gorshin, Markie Post, James Sloyan, Peter Graves, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gary Coleman, Ray Walston, Michael Ansara, Dorothy Stratten, Morgan Brittany, Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson, Mary Woronov, Anne Lockhart, Dennis Haysbert, Jerry Orbach, Judy Landers, Julie Newmar, and Vera Miles. These 21 episodes running 1166 minutes come on 6 single-sided DVDs, presented in full screen video, English mono sound, and with subtitles in English, French and Spanish. The original complete series release had no bonus material, and similarly there have been no extras announced for this title, either. Before anybody asks about a Blu-ray version, we'll just point out that nothing at all has been said by the studio about a high-def disc release of this show. Cost for the Season 1 DVDs are $24.98 SRP, and here's the package art (using the same key graphic seen on the old set):

I got the original complete series set twice and had problems both times and had to return them so it's nice that they are releasing it on single sided ones. I'll pay a little more to have discs that play right.

Is there really that much demand for just season 1? The 2 season boxed set is on sale often for about $12-15, so unless the single season release is going to be significantly less than that, why purchase the single season?

Well, I prefer to have the complete series but I already got it twice and it messed up both times so I'll settle for the rerelease plus Season 1 is the better season anyway. Plus I like single sided discs better. I figure they will release the other season later on.

Re: Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Season 1 01/24/12

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: The Complete Epic Series has been released in the United States and Canada in DVD Region 1 (NTSC) format and is essentially the entire series minus the fact that the television version of the episode 'Awakening' is not included. The TV version that originally aired on 9/20/1979 was essentially the theatrical version (which is included in this DVD set) edited slightly with a few additional scenes. These scenes were added and others were edited to better help segue-way into the television series.

This DVD set might include the television version of "Awakening" unlike the previous release. Does not seem like much to constitute a double dip for me.

If this does have the TV version, I'll double dip.

What I remember was Twiki meeting a female ambuquad who said "Booty Booty Booty" before talking. God, this was so stupid, things were different back then.

Good time...

This would be a great show to reboot; on cable with better writers. I would love to see a Captain Rogers in the far future where technology is advance, but blocky with toggle switches and big buttons.

I'd be happy if they were putting out Season 2 as well. Single-sided discs might make this an instant-buy for me.

*Sigh* I liked the 2-sided discs (when they worked!) but looks like Universal would rather drop them than switch to a more reliable manufacturer.

What is the difference between the tv and movie version? I seem to remember a scene at the end where Dr. Huer asks buck to join their organiztion, and he declines and gives a speech about wanting to find a way back to the 20th century and not wanting to be attached tp people in the 25th. I don't remember the whole thing being on the dvd but I could be wrong. What other missing scened are there?

Inspired by the massive success of Star Wars two years earlier, the pilot film opened in cinemas on March 30, 1979. Good box-office returns led NBC to commission a full series, which began on September 20, 1979 with a modified version of the theatrical release, which trimmed or altered some racier scenes — including a comment by Twiki ("freezing his ball bearings off"), and also omitted the death of Tigerman, Princess Ardala's henchman, who would later appear in several episodes of the series. There was also some footage added, including Buck exploring his new quarters, and his first conversation with Dr. Theopolis regarding the nature of Anarchia.

The ball bearings quip caught me off-guard when I watched the movie version a few years ago.

I ran into this today. As I recall, its the theatrical version of the pilot. So, no.

I picked up the whole series box set for like $9.00 a year back. Is picture quality better not that it matters in my case?

Don't know; picture quality.

When this hits ten bucks I'll pick up a copy. I'm not a fan of double-sided discs.

The back of the packaging states that it is the movie and not the 2 part episode. I think it was cool of Universal to put that on the packaging so you weren't surprised when you opened it. I hope they will include it on season two as a ploy to get fans to buy the weaker season.

I'm very happy with the theatrical version that comes on the DVD -- that's always been my favorite.

But just FYI, if people are looking for the TV cut (with the little 'coda' attached, etc.) -- that's what Netflix has via streaming.

Re: Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Season 1 01/24/12

I have the initial complete series set of the show, and am rather tempted to get this new DVD release solely because it's on single-sided discs (which I greatly prefer). I agree that adding the T.V. version of "Awakening" to the season 2 set would make this new DVD release an even more attractive buy. I'll probably pick the new single-sides releases up sooner rather than later if the sets end up on sale for around $15.

A blu-ray release would be awesome, even though Universal has given no indication that BR release of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century is even up for consideration. Although it would make sense for Universal to go for a Blu-Ray release sometime in the next year and a half; Universal could take advantage of Blu-Ray releases for Star Trek:The Next Generation and pitch Buck Rogers as another classic sci-fi T.V. series in HD. Hopefully the powers that be at Universal Home Video would spend some cash on restoration work in such a scenario {not to mention extras}, it'd likely give the theoretical Blu-Ray release some good press.

Re: Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Season 1 01/24/12

So we get to pay at least $5 more for just one season plus the cost of a second season, compared to the complete set? I guess I'd double dip when the price for both seasons is comparable to the complete series set.

Re: Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Season 1 01/24/12

Paid under $15 3 years ago for the complete series. I dont care if they are single sided discs. The price increase is not justified. My dvds playd fine so I am good.

The Universal end bumper was removed from most of the episodes in first release, I was hoping that may have been remedied in this set, but not the case...
