I just ordered a Passive 3D TV (LG 47LW5600)

I've been waiting for one of these. The cheap theater glasses was a big selling point, and I've read some really great reviews on the 3D and 2D presentation. I'll share my own thoughts when mine comes in. I got it from Amazon for $949 btw.

Please feel free to share your own experiences with this model, or the 55" version.

Re: I just ordered a Passive 3D TV (LG 47LW5600)

Just got mine in the mail yesterday and was blown away by it's performance. My review from Amazon:

Now this is my first 3D television and I have to say I am thoroughly impressed with this unit. Passive 3D is definitely the way to go after seeing the LG in action. The resolution is lower than active, but honestly I can’t notice one bit watching 3D blu-rays…it looks like full 1080P to me. I’ve tried out a few 3D movies…Resident Evil: Afterlife and Tangled. The 3D performance is better than the theater in my opinion, and the colors really pop. I caught myself ducking a few times…no kidding.

So now you’re wondering how is the 2D picture…phenomenal! The colors pop right off the screen like only an LED can deliver. And standard def dvds look better than ever as well.

There are a multitude of picture setup options so everyone will be pleased, and it even has an auto picture mode (I believe it’s called “Intelligent sensor”) that adjusts your picture quality to match the room environment. Pretty cool. The SmartTV screen is really cool too. It offers a lot of apps and web content which is a nice plus. There is also a wifi dongle which you plug in the back so you don’t even notice it from the front.

I do notice some minor “flash lighting” on the bottom corner of the screen, but it’s really not too noticeable when viewing content. I can’t really comment on audio since I use my receiver.

All in all I’m thoroughly impressed with this unit and can’t say enough good things about it. Go LG!

I watched Tron 3D last night and the IMAX scenes are insane in 3D! The light cycle scene in particular really shines.

Also, I posted an unbox video on Youtube for those interested:

You indicate viewing Tron 3D. Are all copies of Tron capable of viewing on passive systems? Amazon says some 3D titles only play on active systems.

I will be playing 3D titles through PS3 3.5 HDMI to LG LW6500 since my Onkyo 605 is not HDMI 1.4 compliant.

Yes Tron 3D and Tangled (both Disney titles) play fine on the LG passive set. I'm using a PS3 as well with standard HDMI cables. I ordered a new HDMI 1.4 cable with the TV, but found that I didn't need it. I have an older Yamaha receiver that doesn't have HDMI inputs, so I run my PS3 directly to my TV.

I'm looking at this model or the vizio. My question is I just picked up the panasonic DMT 210 wifi 3D blu ray player. Will the high speed hdmi cables for 2.75 from monoprice be ok for 3D?

Thanks

Re: I just ordered a Passive 3D TV (LG 47LW5600)

I was in Best Buy the other day. They had an LG 3D setup for demo (don't know if it was same model, but probably was). It was 47". The deal was the TV, blue ray player, and four sets of glasses for $999. The 3D demo running, was the best 3D I've seen on a home system. I told the sales guy the 3D was almost as good as Avatar, at the Imax. It was really impressive. I like that you don't have to buy batteries for the glasses too. Enjoy!

I'm using my older HDMI cable so those should work. However, it wouldn't hurt to buy some that specify 3D like the one in the link below. I ordered one for under $4 shipped.

I save the glasses every time I go to the theater to use with my LG. I have about a dozen pairs now. They work great. And yes the 3D is amazing on this TV. Even the 2D to 3D conversion is pretty good.

I use it for my older 3D blu-rays like Friday the 13th Part 3 and My Bloody Valentine 3D. I just select the 2D option instead of 3D and then put on my RealD glasses.

Re: I just ordered a Passive 3D TV (LG 47LW5600)

For me, this technology is promising, though I've read mixed things about the lower resolution. I've also seen reports that say it's noticeable, and also mention visible interlacing type effects. Looking forward to seeing how 3D tech develops over the next few years, when I'll be in the market for a new TV.

I can attest from personal experience (I own one) that I have never noticed anything less than a clear picture when watching 3D on my unit, which makes me wonder if there are some faulty units out there. On my LG, the resolution looks just as good as watching 2D BDs. And the fact that I don't have to pay $100s of dollars for glasses is a HUGE plus. So far I've watched 5 3D movies (below) and they've all looked amazing.

Priest
Tangled
Tron Legacy
Green Hornet
Resident Evil: Afterlife

I’m talking about the ACTIVE glasses that don’t come with their respective units (Samsung, Panasonic). I know the LG comes with glasses…mine came with 4 pairs and I collect the ones from the theater. So far I have about a dozen pairs.

6 and Megamind 3-D and the 4 Shrek Movies in 3-D. But I did pay 2.5x more than you.

The point was, don't most of these sets just come with the glasses. Also checking e-bay they are going for $40-60 new. Only rubes buy the sticker price ones in the stores, like monster cables.

I must admit to also having the 3-D Bug

Currently:
Megamind
Shrek 1-4
The Green Hornet
Tron Legacy
Piranha 3-D
Resident Evil Afterlife

Priest worth getting? It seems to have been universally panned. Also Amazon has it down for review...

If you paid 3.5x what he paid then you didn't get any "free" glasses.

I actually enjoyed Priest very much, and the 3D was really good on my LG. I think if you like Resident Evil and Underworld you'll like it.

2.5 (3.5 if I had bought it from Best Buy).

And it was a different TV, a good price for that model at the time.

No, most sets don't come with them. I have a one-step-from-top-end model - a Panasonic P50GT25 plasma - and I don't have any 3D glasses. Don't like it enough to spend the money on a bunch of active glasses.

Really? Strange.

Have you tried ebay, some decent prices.

I've never been to a 3D movie that let you keep the glasses. They all asked for them back afterwards. Transformers 2, A Christmas Carol, and Harry Potter (don't remember which one, but the first 15 minutes were in 3D).

Let
Ask

None of those actions stop theft. Probably why it costs so frickin' much for a movie these days.

I've heard that passive systems have less 'ghosting' artifacts than active monitors - is this true?

Those would be IMAX movies they are different glasses than the 3-D movies in regular theaters. I used to reuse 3-d glasses and just buy tickets to non 3-d shows but the AMC in the town I am in now does not charge extra for 3-D movies.

No ghosting or artifacts with my active set & it's in 1080p.
