13 Assassins (uncut blu?)

I just recent realized that the US release of Miike's 13 Assassins is actually cut by about 15minutes. I tried to look around online for info about an international release that contains the uncut version, but came up empty handed.

Is there anything available on blu ray with english subs?

I looked it up on yesasia.com, but the only one availible on BD is the Japanese version with no English subs. Dubbed "The Normal Edition", which I'm not sure what the hell that means. And for only $55! I'm hoping there will be a Hong Kong release, but I have no idea when/where. They usually have English subs.

It isn't Magnet. The international version was prepared before Magnet bought the rights for distribution. The UK, Germany, they all get the international version of the film as no other version was made available for sale.

Interesting, imdb has this for the run times. The international version has a run time that looks to be 15 minutes shorter than the regular run time. And blu-ray.com has 126 minutes listed for the US Magnolia release.

Technical Specs
Runtime:141 min | 126 min (International version)

That's correct. The longer runtime is the version shown in Japan. The international version is the one that was sold to foreign (non-Japan) distributors.

oh I know, hence my smiley face. The film is opening this coming Friday at Landmark's E Street here in DC - even in it's shortened form, I can't wait to see this!

Thanks for the quick response guys.

I'm really torn about if I should get the US release or just hold off for now. I guess I'll wait... still haven't gotten around to picking up Sukiayaki Western Django for the same reason.

I agree, as trespoochies commented, I'd wait and see what version gets released on Hong Kong DVD/Bluray.

I will say that the International edit is still fantastic. I also hope to see the longer cut soon, though.

Word is that Miike actually cut the shorter international version himself and that it's his preferred cut.

Still, I'd prefer to be able to have the option of watching either of them.

Re: 13 Assassins (uncut blu?)

The scenes cut from the Japanese version are all in the deleted scenes section on the US blu-ray. I watched them after seeing the movie, and their omission from the movie is not at all a big deal.

Comparison between the international and domestic Jpn cut. There might be spoilers if you haven't watched either version.

I actually prefer the Jpn cut. It gives more insight to some of the characters. I also recently watched the original 1960's version; it's basically the same movie. The only difference really is the fight choreography. It's obviously more graphic.

Re: 13 Assassins (uncut blu?)

Yeah, but then there's also a couple deleted scenes that were way too goofy and of a completely different tone from the rest of the movie.

Re: 13 Assassins (uncut blu?)

Finally watching the longer cut and I dig it. I don't believe the tonality suffers at all, because it actually adds more depth to Koyata's character and the fact that he

is not human.

Ah, that way. Cool. I didn't know if a release with English subs finally came out. Sucks it still hasn't.
