The Stanley Kubrick Archives

I'm thinking of picking up the new Stanley Kubrick Archives book, but it's spendy ($126 at Amazon). Does anyone here have it?

http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/cata...acts/00301.htm

The first book to explore Stanley Kubrick’s archives is also the most comprehensive study of the filmmaker to date

Part 1: The films
In 1968, when Stanley Kubrick was asked to comment on the metaphysical significance of 2001: A Space Odyssey, he replied: “It’s not a message I ever intended to convey in words. 2001 is a nonverbal experience…. I tried to create a visual experience, one that bypasses verbalized pigeonholing and directly penetrates the subconscious with an emotional and philosophic content.” The philosophy behind Part I borrows from this line of thinking: from the opening sequence of Killer’s Kiss to the final frames of Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick’s complete films will be presented chronologically and wordlessly via frame enlargements. A completely nonverbal experience.

Part 2: The Creative Process
Divided into chapters chronologically by film, Part 2 brings to life the creative process of Kubrick’s filmmaking by presenting a remarkable collection of material from his archives, including photographs, props, posters, artwork, set designs, sketches, correspondence, documents, screenplays, drafts, notes, and shooting schedules. Accompanying the visual material are essays by noted Kubrick scholars, articles written by and about Kubrick, and a selection of Kubrick’s best interviews.

Special features

• Part 1 features 800 film stills scanned directly from the original prints and interpositives
• Part 2 presents about 800 items from the archives, most of which have never been published before
• essays by Kubrick scholars Gene D. Phillips, Michel Ciment, and Rodney Hill
• selected articles and essays, including interviews with and essays by Stanley Kubrick
• illustrated Kubrick chronology
• audio CD featuring a 70-minute 1966 interview of Stanley Kubrick by Jeremy Bernstein

**BONUS**
• books in the first print run will each include a twelve-frame film strip from a 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey owned by Stanley Kubrick

Anyone see the Chicago Tribune piece on Kubrick's work for Look? It'd make a great book on its own.

I pre-ordered it from Amazon. My film strip is from around the 1:46:43 mark, the pod is outside of the opened emergency hatch, just before it turns toward the camera. The biggest flaw of the book is how the strip is held. It's in a plastic sleeve that's glued to one of the first pages and it's a bitch to get it out. The CD is on the same page and it's the same way.

I believe so. It's only been out in the U.S. since May.

Hard to tell, but it looks like the film strip is of a control panel. Not very telling, but cool nonetheless.

I just ordered it saturday from amazon and got it today.

The first thing is the book is heavy and freaking huge. It's like one of those giant dictonarys that they have in librarys. I don't think you're supposed to move it.

The other thing I'm suprised that I wasn't into the photo's in the first half as much as I thought. Some of them are neat, but they seem to be picking the frames in order of story rather then the great shots versus the not so great.

The frame I got is of the interior of the space ship. Like from Hals POV. No one is in it though, still cool though. I'm tempted to buy another one and whichever book has the frame I don't like sell on ebay.

Does anyone know if any other directors will be doing something like this? Imagine an Akira Kurosawa one with orignal frames of seven samurai, hitchcock archives with psycho frames. Leone with the good the bad and the ugly.

Where's the cheapest place to get this? I looked at Amazon about a week ago, and I could of sworn it was around $120 and now its up to $200. Am I going crazy?

I gave in and ordered it from Barnes and Noble. Can't wait. Here's hoping that it comes with the film strip.

No, you're right. Last week it was like $126, I think. When the book first went up on Amazon it was the publisher's price of $200, then they dropped it down to around $120 and now they've jacked it back up.

Maybe they're trying to get the most for the copies of the first printing. When they run out, they'll lower the price again.

I just spoke with Barnes and Noble customer service, and they said that the book is going to be entering its second printing. They were unable to put in an order from their specific retail stores. Anyone who wants the book must act fast.

i ordered one from amazon last week and i am quite impressed. my filmstrip is a HAL's eye view of dave -- i have not had the time to locate it in the film yet. i was surprised that kubrick's treatment of AI was very similar to what actually showed up on film. i would have sworn the future robots/happy ending was all spielberg's idea.

This is a must-have for any Kubrick fan who can afford it. It's unfortunate that Amazon now has it up to $200 + shipping. I feel pretty lucky to have snagged it from them for about $125 shipped.
